Yay, my band SuckerPunch are playing DeBarra's Folk Club Clonakilty tomorrow night, Saturday 10th of March at 10:30pm with No Cover Charge. Gonna be an awesome gig.

We play a mixture of 80's synth rock, 90's guitar rock, modern chart hits with a rock twist, all with 4 part vocal harmonies and plenty of on stage energy.

Our facebook page is here, and we'd love if a few Boardsies could become fans, the more the merrier!

Join us this Thursday April 5th , 8pm, in Solidarity Books for a screening of
Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey (2011). Film description below.

    Start time is 8pm.

    All welcome, donations appreciated.

Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey (2011)
    "
This remarkable documentary, made over a nine year period, charts the story of Bernadette Devlin McAliskey’s political journey since her explosive entry into the public arena in the late 60's. Combining archive footage with a series of intimate interviews conducted with Devlin McAliskey, director Lelia Doolan encapsulates the idiosyncrasies and rebelliousness which has fuelled her subject’s pivotal role at the heart of civil rights, feminism and socialism in Northern Ireland. The film equally offers a window into the everyday living conditions in Northern Ireland in the mid-20th Century through to the late 60's and the mass popular struggles that emerged in this context –a crucial history for anyone pushing for radical alternatives today.
    "

Producer/Director Lelia Doolan will introduce the film. A discussion will follow the screening.

Cinema Night – "All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, Director Adam Curtis" Thursday 26th April 8pm,

Join us this Thursday April 26th in Solidarity Books for a screening of "All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, Director Adam Curtis" . The latest documentary from Adam Curtis.

We will show all three parts with a short interval for tea and cake !

    Film description below.
    Start time is 8pm.

All welcome, entry is Free and donations are appreciated.

"All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace: How we have been colonised by the machines we have built, Director Adam Curtis

    Part 1 Love and Power
Explores the dream that evolved in the 60's that computers could create a new kind of stable world. The film tells the story of two attempts, one a small group of disciples of novelist / philosopher Ayn Rand in the 1950's who elevated the ideal of totally selfish desire, the second the Utopian vision attempted by entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley many influenced by Ayn Rand. Ultimately it shows how these ideas lead ruthless capitalists like Alan Greenspan to take control of the financial world and result in our present situation.

Part 2 The Use and Abuse of Vegetational Concepts
This film examines how the idea of self regulating eco systems held dear by modern science is actually a machine fantasy based on cybernetic ideas projected onto nature in the 1950s, and taken up by hippy communities and counter culture computer scientists in the 1960's and 1970's.

Part 3 The Monkey in the Machine and the Machine in the Monkey
The final film looks at why we find this machine vision so beguiling by telling the story of Bill Hamilton who pioneered the idea that human beings are machines programmed to pass on genes. In typical Adam Curtis style it weaves together many seemingly disparate characters and elements set against the background of political upheaval in the Congo to show how our disillusionment and loss of hope in political change has lead to choosing to believe we have no control over our destiny.  "

    NO SPILL BLOOD

    nsbv.jpg

The new band from Matt Hedigan (Elk, Hooray for Humans), Lar Kaye (Adebisi Shank) and Ruadhan O'Meara (Magic Pockets, Crayonsmith, Guilty Optics). Formed in the winter of 2011, the trio's brand of synth-laced alt rock quickly drew feverish acclaim at the annual Whelan's Ones To Watch event and played their first Cork show to a packed audience in Triskel's TDC room.

    ELK

    54200510150654264322330.jpg

The most recent signing to influential Limerick independent label Out On A Limb (also home to Windings, Rest, Ten Past Seven and more), monster-pop trio Elk have forged a strong reputation for incendiary live shows and a unique and brazen take on alternative rock. In 2009 they released a widely celebrated debut album 'We Should Start Our Own Gang' followed more recently by a download-only three track EP simpy titled 'New Songs' in 2011. Elk are currently hard at work on their second album, due for release on OOAL later this year.

    TERRIERS

    575771_409496232413875_300499389980227_1506503_1724356607_n.jpg

A new four-piece rock outfit from Cork. Comprised of members from a number of local bands past and present, they have spent the last few months honing their craft in a dark, cold rehearsal room. With their debut single 'Get Over Here' and a powerful performance supporting Bouts last month, Terriers are quickly making a name for themselves as ones to watch for 2012.

    THE MAORI JOHN WAYNE

    42969524534384889090312.jpg

A bizarre seven-piece fusing every genre they can get their hands on and who hide their identities behind some very strange, ornate masks and costumes.

    10am: John Eder
    Time Banking

Time Banking is a means of exchange where your time spent helping your neighbors and building a strong community is turned into a cashless currency.
It’s an indirect bartering system as opposed to direct bartering between people which requires a coincidence of wants. A Time Bank uses units of time as currency. Everyone’s time and talent is considered equal - your time is exactly equivelent to another's. Softwear is used to track transactions within an online directory.
We'll talk about Time Banking as an alternative currency that is sustainable, inclusive and supports strong, autonomous community as well as discussing tools and next steps for actually organising a Time Bank for Cork.

    12pm: Mick Byrne
    Autonomy and the financial system

From the forty-hour week to state pensions, people have always sought to liberate their time and creativity from capital. Today, however, when the financial system forms such a central part of capitalism, it can feel like there is no way to escape the private and national debt that is central to financial capitalism. This talk will ask what autonomy means in this new context and what the implications are for social movements.

    2pm: Patrick Bresnihan
    Counter-culture and counter-power in the 18th century

In the latter half of the eighteenth century, secret agrarian organisations surfaced in different parts of Ireland. Their grievances included the enclosure of common lands, inflated rent and the payment of tithes to the established church.
These popular movements are not easily understood within the familiar historical frameworks of nationalism or religion. At the same time they are often considered 'cultural' or 'social' because their struggles were not framed in a 'political' discourse. While their localism has obvious weaknesses these autonomous movements effectively undermined the power of the state. They challenged the unjust effects of the governing logic by appealing to and living by a different logic rooted in alternative practices and understandings of the common good.

    3.30pm: Amber O'Sullivan & St.John O'Donnabhain
Get Collectively Organising and Avoid Burnout!

A short introductory workshop about building a personally and collectively more sustainable resistance. It will be geared towards those interested in effecting social change, particularly those involved with political or community work - but all who are interested are welcome to come along.
We want to move beyond the idea that collective work and work on the self are separate areas and instead move towards an integrated approach. During the workshop we will aim to introduce various techniques, tools and ideas for dealing with group or individual burnout within community or political organising.

    Talk and photographs from Palestine
At Solidarity Books, 43 Douglas Street
    Sunday 20th May, 5.00pm

    11.maxineandherbook.jpg
Resistance to the Israeli Occupation –nonviolent solidarity among Palestinians and Israelis.
What has been happening, why, what have activists been doing -analysis and update from Palestine and the Global March on Jerusalem.

Maxine Kaufmann-Lacousta: Canadian and Israeli, activist and writer, Maxine has been involved in activism for justice in Palestine and Israel, either part-time or fulltime most of her life. She has visited the area regularly for extended periods since the 60’s and lived in Jerusalem in the 80’s and 90’s, working with the Alternative Information Center. She saw the error of Zionism after her first visit to Israel as a teenager with a Zionist youth organization in 1960. She was instrumental in bringing about international support for the Jahalin Bedouin, fighting their cause in the courts and practically by staying with them, as protector and witness to threats from Israeli bulldozers.

This is a great opportunity to meet and discuss the issues with Maxine, and hear a presentation based on her book –that presents the story from 100 Palestinian and Israeli activists and their analysis -as well as an up-to-date report from last month. Though Maxine in realistic, her presentation is inspiring.

Copies of Maxine’s recent book Refusing to be Enemies - Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation published by Ithaca Press (2011) will be available for sale.

In 2008, Iceland was confronted with an unprecedented economic disaster. The country's three banks collapsed, dragging to ruin the country's whole social, economic and political life. “The Viking Way”, is a documentary about how Iceland responded very differently to the crisis of the market and capitalism.

    Start time is 8pm.
