Hmmm hope this doesn't mean they are the next South County...

Check List when joining a golf club (re finances and management):

    - Always advisable to ask for a copy of a club's latest audited accounts (but this only tells you how they performed for the last 2 years and things could have changed quickly this year).

    - Ask how many members the club lost this year (and how this compares with their budget plan for the year - also ask for copy of budget for 2012).

    - If the club lost a significant number, ask what new action is being taken to balance their budget for this year (through cost cuts, outsourcing, marketing initiatives, etc.).

    - Ask what actions have been taken in last 2 years to reduce their cost base and increase revenue.

    - You are taking a bigger risk than necessary, if the club is doing nothing other than reacting to events (they should have provided for some membership losses and cost reductions in their budget).

    - Reduce your risk by paying in monthly installments.

Just a small point but if you are prepared to pay €5-€10 you can go on to the CRO website and get the filed financial statements for the last couple of years.

No not great, their yearly membership is €2,000 + VAT so with nearly half the year gone you've effectively getting it prorated. Granted you still have the height of the summer season to play so there's advantages there.
Would love to join Luttrellstown, think it's one of the best parklands in Dublin (have yet to play Dun Laoghaire) with great practice facilities but can't justify the nearly €2,200 yearly subscription.
Another concern I'd have is that it only has about 100 members which is not enough for a viable club and good turnout in weekend and interclub competitions etc. The club has had issues about 4 years ago when all members were told the club was closing and they were forced to move to Castleknock, The Hermitage and some as far as Killeen Castle. If they were to reduce their yearly membership to €1,500 I think they'd seriously increase their membership base and I for one would have to seriously consider it.

In fairness, if the club owns the land then 2,000 plus is a bit rich. But on the other hand what do you expect for this money?

I use a local gym which is a stuffy room with a few weights and machines and they charge 400 per year. Also they are subsidised by the local authority.

So for access to a full golf course, play as often as you want etc I dont think 2,000 is totally off the wall.

If you use the course say 40 times a year that's 50 Euros per round - not bad when you consider the social side of the club that's also involved. Throw in practise facilities ( if the club has them ), and you've saved upwards of 500 per year ( 10 per week visit to the range ). Bring a few pals out for a round, even better....

It's the outrageous entrance fees that these clubs charged at the height of the Celtic Tiger blahdy blah that used to get my goat.

Even during peak season the weekend green fee is €45 and that's per their website so you may even get cheaper if you call and haggle.

While I understand your point about the social aspect, I dont think a fully paid up member should have to pay the same sort of prices as a visitor.

They would need 2k with those small numbersto run the place properly I reckon.
maintenance of courses hasn't gotten much cheaper while income has dropped significantly.

But would Luttrellstown be doing very well on green fees versus most other courses ?

It is looking like the numbers don't add up for golf courses.

For some one to pay 2 K they need to play about 60 games per year, You can get most courses at this level for 35 euro . That mean you need to play 60 games a year. I'm not sure there are that many who will play 60 times a year ?

The 2k is a entry fee to keep certain type of people out, there currently not interest in having 100's of members. Remember when this course was sold 5 years ago it was meant to be developed into the next K club etc and I'm sure the current owners who have plenty of cash our just waiting for the market to turn around again. This course is a business and I'm guessing not really interest in the views of members or if it is, they only want people who have plenty of cash and don't play much and like to say there a member of a elite club.

    Fair enough,

But it can't be considered elite now ?, if it is on tee times every day of the week, is a regular on the society circuit, fairways were poor when I was there.

I think they are looking at the pay per play and society money as the future of golf. That is what they are doing at moment.

It would be a long, long shot that the market is going to turn around.

Agreed, Im just making the point that the most basic of gyms charges 300-400 per year membership.

Basically a fully-paid up member of a golf pays the same or similar fees as visitors in most clubs, unless the member plays play 60 times a year.

If a fully paid-up member has paid entrance fees as well as getting caught for the 2,000+ per year, then the figures are off the scale altogether.

It would be a good survey,

How many games do you play a year ?

It was a good point made about the money you save on a range, but when you go to course with a practice area, the most you see on them are 1 maybe 2 lads.

    Played 28 times last year.

Probably got a similar amount of sessions on the practise range.

Puts it into perspective doesnt it?

That means your rounds are way above 50 euro each ?

Sorry, maybe off thread, but would you be above average at your club ?

I've no idea how many people play every week in the season. There's always a few out, but only weekends and open week are really busy. I'd say 30 games a year is average, but basing that on nothing but guesswork. How many times did you get out yourself last year?

It's been an odd year for me. > 60. But play tee times. Anyway sorry , gone way off topic here I think, but would be a good thread.

I think trying to work out a greenfee rate is missing the pint if why people join clubs.
I pay 2k because I want to be a member of a nice, local club. I want to be able to wander down whenever I want and practice or play a few holes. Maybe a couple of frames of snooker or just hit the putting green for an hour and then see who is in the bar.
I want to play against my friends in matches and with them for the club matches.
The nomadic style of just playing in random opens doesn't appeal to me at all I'm afraid.

Even as im typing this I'm walking back to my car with my clubs on my back and I've been out here since 5:30.
    That's worth 2k to me.

Agreed, many golfers want to be members of a nice local club, but those prepared to pay an annual fee of €2,000 represent a very small segment of the market.

Most people would expect much more reasonable annual rates and get a reasonable standard of facilities (from course to practice areas, changing rooms, pro shop, bar, restaurant, etc.) for their money - but not necessarily a snooker room.

The majority would also expect the affairs of the club to be run diligently, without over the top spending on nice to have stuff.

At the end of the day, people are looking for value for money for the overall package, covering annual sub, requirement for "hello money", travelling time, course layout, presentation, whether hilly or flat, etc. etc.

But, like it or not, the annual sub is always going to be a big element affecting peoples' choice of deciding to stay with their existing club or joining a new one.

Hi Philby - do you know if the 7 day membership is until the end of the calender year or is it from the day you join? Also, do they allow DD payment of the amount?

    Thanks

The reason why it's called resort is because the old golf club there was called "Citywest Golf Club" the new club is now called "Citywest Resort Golf Club"

    Hi,

It is calendar year but seeing as we are nearly halfway through the year by now I would say if you contact them and speak to them about it they might be able to offer you a deal

Yep DD, no minimum for deposit either, with the remainder repayable up to 8 months

Am i correct in saying at Roganstown can you pay €120 a month for 9 months and than not bother with the other three, simply start paying again when you want to re-join?

Probably not correct but that is how it reads.

Am i correct in saying at Roganstown can you pay €120 a month for 9 months and than not bother with the other three, simply start paying again when you want to re-join?

Probably not correct but that is how it reads.

    Can't answer that.

Would be great if you could ring them to clarify and let us know.

Are there any Headfort members on here? I am just curious about membership. I missed the offer they had for the last few months (joining without the entrance fee) and was wondering if there is any talk about it becoming available again?

Just played both courses recently and I would really be interested in becoming a member.

    Thanks in advance.

Kilcock are doing a deal of €850 (no joining fee), which covers until January 2014. I think they let you do a monthly payment as well.

Disclaimer; parents play there, saw the leaflet one of them had about it.

Hollystown: €795 for full membership. €595 for 5 day. Have a look on their website as they have other deals as well. I play there quite a lot with our society and may join the full.

I'd say the competition will be fierce between clubs over the next few months. I certainly will be keeping a close eye on developments as I am in the market for a change of clubs. 795 for Hollystown is not bad at all - I'd consider that. Bit short though as I recall. 3 nines though right?

    Yes it has 3 nines.

    Hows things,

how many times a year would you roughly play. only reason i ask is,
if you play 20 times a yr at E15 a round on top of your 250 joining fee you come to E550. for the extra 100 you can become a full member.

I would play every weekend and in Spring , Summer I would get out at least twice a week . So you have got me thinking that it would make a lot more sense to take out a full membership alright

Ballinascorney (9 Hole in Rathfarnham ) have a membership offer for 890. No joining fee. I think Dublin City may have to be taken off the list as well!!
    Good luck

We had our AGM last night where we were told that the annual subs will remain at €1500. An incentive to get more members is the combined Golf Club/Health Spa (Gym!) membership of €1650. If you are serious about your golf and fitness I think it's a great offer!. We also have the members introduction incentive where we get a discount off our membership of €250 if we introduce a new member. (If any of you are interested I will split it with you! ;))
Visitors green fees will be reduced to €15 for the winter months and €20 for "high" season.
The management have committed €155,000 to upgrade and improve the bunkers between now and Spring 2013 which is very good news as it is really the only thing that we feel lets the course down.
Looking forward to next year :D

Anyone in the midlands area West of Dublin looking for somewhere new to play ??

    well look no further than

    Athlone Golf Club

425 for the year as a new member!!!

Fantastic offer for anyone in the midlands area to be a member of a really challenging course with a great bunch of existing members! we're only an hour from dublin down the motorway aswell so get yourselves down here quick while there's still places available!!!

(we're not really short of places, but come quick. The course is open pretty much all the time, is in great condition, has great drainage, so we dont flood easily and I'm the competitions secretary this year, so you're bound to ahave a great time! :D

That's seriously good value, never played the course but have only heard good things. How is it clubs outside the Dublin region can offer such good value while clubs within the periphery of Dublin are deemed reasonably at and over €1k?
