agree........how in gods name do they expect people to pony up that cash for a joke of a course that's very open to the elements and closes a fair bit
Re Glen of the Downs - Played it a few times in the summer, and got a few dirty looks from members one Saturday who thought that the tee time I had was reserved for members only. It's obviously struggling. When you compare it to what you get for similar ( ish ) money in Druids Glen, which is a fantastic course, then I think 1900 looks ridiculous money.

....... if you feel so strongly about something you should have the courage to say who you are, rather than hiding behind an alias....
So what is the purpose of the "golfwallah" account then?

So what is the purpose of the "golfwallah" account then?

Are you suggesting there is a multi in our midst?

Good deal it may be to some ....... but most people, who are not already members, will need to know the price for annual membership before drawing that conclusion.

I've heard it's a great course but why all the secrecy about publishing a price on their website?

Why do you have to contact the office to register your interest (especially if you are shopping around and haven't the time or desire to make phone calls to be checked out first) ..... makes it look like they want to screen possible applicants!

Any serious potential members who are willing to shell out the best part of €1000 euros should have no issue in ringing the GC Office which is manned with helpful and knowledgeable staff. If you haven't the time or desire to make 1 phone call for this spend then you must not be serious about joining in the first place?

I don't believe that this is anything to do with secrecy.

"great course" > Two courses btw.

As for "screening", well my understanding here is that there is a facility for an existing member to query the admission of a proposed new member as part of the joining process (maybe this has changed, I don't know). Is this a bad thing? Is this different from other member owned clubs?

If you're a serious, potential candidate, why not make the phone call and post your findings on here?.....

I played Headford new last sunday, after the round I spoke with the pro he confirmed there were new memberships available for next year without any joining on fee just pay a sub of around 900e. The process seemingly is as each new member pays his sub for 2012 he will receive a coupon, this coupon can be given by a member to a friend etc and that person can join for 900e with the number of coupons capped at 200. If someone doesn't know a member or cannot get their hands on a coupon they can register their interest with the GC office and go on a list, if the full uptake of coupons is not realised they will draw down the remaining places from the list. What he also said was that it was at the discretion of the member to charge what he liked for the coupon to maybe claw back some of their joining fees but he thought this was unlikely.

Folks this is descending in to a thread on particular clubs. Lets keep it clean and on topic. A job well done to Golfwallah, and to all contributors. Keep up the good work.

what sort of dick would charge you for a coupon?
any charge would be followed up with the distribution of some pain.

JD no malicious intent in my post, just reporting the conversation I had with the pro. I'm sure there will be alot of prospective members for 900e myself included.

Some clarity on the coupon situation would be great.

Scubapro I meant that it was descending into a discussion on particular clubs rather than a discussion of facts in general relating to the large number of clubs that have cut the entry fees. No malicious intent at all in your posts, and no inference from me that there was any.

Unglika Norse, your memory does not serve you correctly ...... Balcarrick has been making prices readily available on its website for over 2 years now.

I've moved on from all that now .... done my bit ... and the club now has very healthy finances (after 3 profitable years in a row), thank you very much

Glad to see that most clubs are now following suit in publishing their prices on their websites. This makes it easier for prospective customers to compare rates between clubs, and there's plenty of choice out there now.

But easy on - no need for personal attacks ....... if you feel so strongly about something you should have the courage to say who you are, rather than hiding behind an alias.

Any club that doesn't balance its books and has used up its reserves will be faced with the same combination of choices - increase income, slash costs to the bone, levy members or close shop altogether.

My guess is that quite a few are in this boat already and more will follow in 2012. The customer is king right now.

If I was in error I apologise but I do remember persons asking you what the 2011 rate would be when you were doing a membership drive in 2010 and you couldn't give the answer.

I am very happy that your club has shown a profit in the last three years even more cuedos due as you lost almost 200 members over the period 2008 to 2011 so to make up that lost revenue deserves merit

There was nothing personal in the attack I just thought you were being a bit smart with golfbgud who was simply passing on information.

Some clarity on the coupon situation would be great.

I made an initial enquiry and was informed that Members were not expected to sell or make a progit from the voucher scheme. Regrettably, I missed the AGM on Sunday last so I don't know if this was discussed or made it to the agenda - I suspect not.

If I hear anything more "official" I will post the details.

As always, please feel free to ring the Office and ask all the questions you want!

Looking to join somewhere in Dublin area. What is Citywest like- 250 pay and play seems like good value.

I am a member of Headfort and received my voucher in the post that can be used to waive the joining fee for any new member. None of my mates are looking to join at the moment so if anyone is interested in this please let me know. Annual sub is 979 (with 50 in the bar).

Headfort GC annual sub is the same as last year - €979 and is broken down as follows:

    Sub €850
    GUI € 19
    G/fee Voucher € 60
    Bar/Com Levy € 50

This thread is always good for a laugh - better than the Simpons IMHO. Clubs need to got real about entrance fees - or are there individuals out with this kind of money to spend on pastimes still???

I would say being Jewish is the number 1 requirement.

No its not. The Jewish community make up about 40% of the Edmondstown membership. The Gentiles making up the balance.

I have done that by accident and been told off!!!
Told a guy new to the game who was playing in a classic up there once that they did the best fry up in Dublin. He duly arrives and asks for the full Irish.

And help bail out another nama'ed course

i don't think i'm the only one here who's sick of your endless anti Nama, anti distance members posts....you don't have to diss a post just because the course is in Nama, people are aware of it i'm sure and will make their own minds up
    where are you a member?????

:D Agreed Heavyballs. You have to have a real chip on your shoulder to not play a course because its in NAMA.

There are now a larger variety of quality golf courses available to play at a reasonable price. It appears that those who paid large entrance fees to join average golf courses are most inclined to have a gripe with the 'NAMA courses' and distance membership. However, it was the individuals decision to pay these extortionate fees and now that these entrance fees have been eliminated and membership is at a more reasonable cost it can only benefit the golfing community and bring more players into the game that would otherwise have been put off by the start up costs involved.

Furthermore, the distance membership serves as method of those who are put off by the costs to obtain a GUI handicap and play competitively. The arguement that these handicaps are inaccurate is a question of honesty and there are people in all clubs who fabricate their score be it through 'the magic pencil' or by deliberatly playing poorly for .1
