I have done that by accident and been told off!!!
Told a guy new to the game who was playing in a classic up there once that they did the best fry up in Dublin. He duly arrives and asks for the full Irish.

Seriously, they only serve kosher food?

I had a mate who enquired recently and said he was offered membership for 5k

Bloody good value at that considering what else is on offer in Dublin and environs in terms of entry fees, assuming what he said is true.

Imagine paying 11,000 and you can't even get a sausage.

I enquired about 2 months ago - I am not from Dublin originally so didn't know what courses would be in my price range so I did a google search and sent emails to any courses I could find in a 15-20mile radius of where I am living.

The genral manager of Edmonstown (Selwyn, I remember it because I had never heard that name before) emailed me back asking for my postal address to send out the price list.

I provided my address and the list arrived a few days later with a compliment slip attached at the front stating the 2011 price list had not come back from the printers so he had amended the 2010 prices to show any changes. When I looked at the list I could see the 2010 joining fee was €10k, this was struck through with a pen and €11k was written beside it. At the bottom of the page was a handwritten note saying I could pay the joining fee over 5 years but, on joining, I would have to provide 5 cheques for €2,200 each and dated on the same date for the next 5 consecutive years. The annual sub had also gone up, from memory it wasn't by much but I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to it once I had seen the joining fee.

11,000 sounds more believable than 5,000 TBH, with what other clubs are looking for in Dublin. There is an old thread detailing clubs close to Dublin who do charge entry fees, if you have info you could update that thread for the benefit of other boardies.

Apologies, I got the years wrong. I meant the 2012 prices had not come back so I received an amended 2011 list.

Mad price to pay into an average club. I looked at Grange, Castle, Edmondstown and Rathfarnham back when there was waiting lists. None of them were worth the money IMO.

For them to be still looking for this type of money is mad!!!! Shop around and find better value.

I moved to dublin last year and have decided to join somewhere for 2012. I live in the dun laoighre area and having assessed all the options and weighed up the cost V quality of course I have decided on Druids Heath. At €1.5 p.a. with no joining fee I believe this to be the best value in terms of location (25 mins from home) and quality of course. Furthermore, having met the captain and staff there, i was impressed that they are really trying to ramp up membership and build a community atmosphere and are entering numerous interclub competitions there.

When I compare the location, facilities and price to other options available such as those named above and also Dun Laoighre, South County, Powerscourt, Bray, Greystones, Glen of the Downs there was no comparison.

Also the fact that there is no joining fee offers flexibility when deciding in the future.

Redzah, I joined South County. As a complete beginner the course is challenging. The staff/members I met when I visited were very friendly and I was able to get a full years membership (for and under 30 y/o) for €1,030 which they have let me split into monthly direct debit payments so it ticked all the right boxes for me.

Best of luck in your new club.

Cheers Link2007. I actually should not have put south county in the above bracket as i noticed that the price is reasonable with my main reason choosing druids heath ahead of it being I prefer the course and facilities and I know a member in DH.

Information on a course to suit a beginner. I joined Ballinascorney near Grange a couple of years ago and it has no joining fee. Owned by NAMA, only 9 holes and somewhat hilly but really convenient for South Dublin. Good social aspect, well looked after and costing about 950 a year I think. Will post when I get my renewal notice.

I know its not greatest course but does anybody know membership fees for place?

As me few mates were thinking of joining if it was reasonable price.

Clubs around it are too expensive.

Sweet lord €950 for half a course...

My apologies for causing you consternation. I misunderstood and thought this thread was to share information about golf courses in dublin. I did not realise that there was qualifying criteria. And I now realise that just because I am surrounded by golf courses that I cannot afford to join ( Edmondstown 11K, Grange 20+K, Rathfarnham 3/4 club for 5K, Castle etc ) I should not have joined one in the area I could afford. The fact that I can nip out for a quick 9 holes after work should not have come at a "premium". The fact that my previous 18 hole "full" course involved over 2 hours of travel time should really not matter. The fact I can now spend those 2 hours with my young family is no reason to spend more money. The possibility that there may be others out there in this situation is probably ludicrous. Again, I must apologise for wasting your time and let you get back to finding premium full golf courses in Dublin for no joining fee.

The main reasons that these clubs are still looking for hello money is because there is still enough demand.

If you live near these clubs, the possibility of being able to walk to the course, play golf with your neighbours/friends and then walk home after a few pints is probably worth the hello money to some.

They probably find it good value or at least worth paying.

I've played Ballinascorney and it's a reasonable course, but when you cannot afford the other clubs close to you, then you were dead right to go for it. If there was more of this and less of the heads up the behinds then the world would be a better place. Fair play to you.

Never played Ballinascorney but if it suits you and is at a price you're willing to pay without the excessive joining fees then I hope you enjoy your golf there. I'm in a similiar position where i am not willing to pay any excessive joining fees but I am willing to travel up to 30 mins to find a quality course reasonable price to me, hence my decision for druids heath, however I believe that you will get the same enjoyment out of your arrangement in Ballinascorney than i will in Druids Heath so fair play to you. I think Marlow does not understand the situation judging from his other posts on boards as he appears to be a student from the kilkenny/waterford area so does not understand dublin golf club prices. There is a huge demand for membership in Dublin that is not there in Kilkenny so without experience of this I think you should consider whether you are best placed to provide meaningful comments

Thanks for your judgement of my post's worth and also thanks to the other guy for the sarcasm although if it was meant to be a put-down it was pretty weak.
My comment was "sweet lord" after a description of a golf course that charges ~ €1,000 for membership and what I took from the description was '9 hole course', 'somewhat hilly' and 'suit a beginner'. This, to me here in the oblivion know as "the sticks", doesn't jump off the page as seeming like great value. Now I haven't played the course so I can't offer a critique but it does allow me to feel a bit of empathy for golfers in/near the capital regarding the prices they pay for membership.

My point is that your comments were not constructive in any shape or form and you do not appear to have the sufficient knowledge of the golf club membership fees in dublin to judge as you are from the 'sticks' as you have said yourself.

    Your comment was about as useful as me saying;

'Sweet Lord, €749 to join a racetrack with flags in it'

I do not believe I would be in a position to say this as I am not from the kilkenny area nor have I researched the average club membership fees there and I have not played Gowran park.

Well actually it should, you pay for location in golf courses, the same way you pay for location in anything. Wouldnt you pay more for a course thats 5 mins away versus one thats 2 hours away?

Think I will join Deerpark for 200euro.

I know its not exactly a fantastic course, but I have not been member of club in 11 years and just getting back playing, so need start somewhere.

Few mates live that direction and want join club too, hence why choosing it.

Not played it since October 2010 but has anyone played it during summer or recently and have any good or bad things to say about it? are Bunkers still that same sand?

Played it in the summer and about 300 times as a young lad, since the new 18 opened about 15 years ago i guess, it has not changed one bit.

Grand spot if you are not too worried about playing top class stuff. You would want to find out what rights a member has over joe soap. If your mates are only starting up it is perfect I'd say.

Greens grand, can get a little long, but good condition for a public course.

Was not in too many bunkers, but i guess you are talking about that grainy sand that is a feature of the place.

After the 3rd / 4th hole, it gets a bit predictable and boring and flat. One hole with the wall 13th ? is good and picks up again at par 3 15th.

To be honest, lads starting out in golf would be way more comfortable in Deer Park , less formal. A beginner not out of place there. Also, not a big cost if the game is doing your head in.

By the way on the other topic, I think the proximity of a golf course is quickly going up the list of importance, travel costs are going to be an increasing feature of life and travelling 30 - 40 minutes in a car is becoming a non runner.

Played it in the summer and about 300 times as a young lad, since the new 18 opened about 15 years ago i guess, it has not changed one bit.

    Cheers for feedback.

Ya I see what your saying about the holes after 3rd hole alright.

Just kinda want get back playing regular Golf and I taught the few times I did play the Greens were pretty ok nothing special, but decent enough all the same.

Ya that grainy sand is its only major downfall imo but hopefully wont see much of it if do join;)

    Thanks Again.

I'm looking for membership somewhere strictly to get an official handicap. From what i can gather Blessington Lakes seems to be the best option out there. €150 to include GUI and 3 rounds to get my handicap. Never been a member anywhere or played Blessington. Just wondering could if any of you more experienced members/golfers could throw me some advice or info regarding Blessington.

I've been a member there since it opened in 1998. I absolutely love the place. Send me a PM and I will answer any queries you have.

This is avery useful thread as more and more Golgerf try for value for money. I attach an excel sheet, taken from above info, which may help with decision based on financial considerations. In cell A2 put in the cost of fuel per litre, now or future, in cell B2 put in Liters per 100KM your car uses (new cars) or in cell C2 MPG, one of these should be zero, also in D2 put in how many trips you will make. This won't be exact but it will give an idea. Only enter the distance and tolls for one way as the formula assumes twice this figure.

If it's any help good if not just ignore.
