I believe that Greystones are having a review of their €11,000 hello money and €1,800 subs this week. Seemingly, they had a membership drive recently, but had very little uptake. It's hardly surprising as there is over a dozen courses nearby to choose from.

€11k to join Greystones is, in the current climate (apologies for my use of that overused expression!), outrageous. Not surprised their recruitment drive was unsuccessful. A decent course but by no means remarkable and there are plenty of courses around of similar or better standard offering FAR greater value than that.

My thoughts exactly! The €1800 a year subs are very high for what looks like a fairly low maintance course. I live locally and played there yesterday for only the 2nd time in six years, It's an Old Conna/Charlesland level course at Druid's Glen/Powerscourt prices.

Thats interesting, I had heard they were in a bit of bother with the banks and the landlord was considering going back to farming the land. Did they buy him out?

Not cheap, but I hope they survive and get the extra members they want as its a nice track and the staff are good.

I don't think they bought him out thus members are paying a club sub . I think the 1500+vat goes to the G.O.D plc which is his company.

While we are on the topic of "cheap" golf Killcoole are doing a Social Members package .

€350 +gui fees
10 free rounds of golf + entry into 5 comps reduced green fees thereafter.

Social members comps midweek + able to invite friends at guest rate.

not a bad deal for a beginner or "part time" golfer

also after you use up your 10 freebies they only charge €10 for a round,it's my local course so i think i'll take this offer up unless something better comes along,not a bad 9 hole course,not long but quite tricky in places and certainly no pushover
i presume the social member comps you mention above is the regular semi open for members but social members are allowed to enter,sounds good untill the social members start winning me thinks

I don't know the full ins and outs of it but it sounds like a good deal ,I played it today a very enjoyable round of golf that 8th par 5 is a monster in the winter over 600 yards into the wind

Debating whether to renew my own membership in Druids Heath next year. Been there 2.5 years and considering a change for a more rewarding course. Maybe cheaper membership and play some opens or green fees.

I'd be happy to stay there but I'm looking at options. Haven't made the most of it this year and also the course is very hard to score on, meaning it can be difficult to get friends to play there regularly.
Course in good condition all year around (with the exception of the bunkers)

Why do you have to contact the office to register your interest (especially if you are shopping around and haven't the time or desire to make phone calls to be checked out first) ..... makes it look like they want to screen possible applicants!

Whats with the story doing the rounds that your financial situation is precarious and that if you don't gain enough memberships to make up for the ones that you are currently losing that next year members will face levies of up to e450, maybe you can confirm or deny this for reasons of clarity and transparency.

This is a bit rich coming from you Mr Rafferty as if memory serves me right without looking up past post, people on here last year had the devil of a time trying to get information out of you about your subscriptions in Balcarrick.

Unglika Norse, your memory does not serve you correctly ...... Balcarrick has been making prices readily available on its website for over 2 years now.

I've moved on from all that now .... done my bit ... and the club now has very healthy finances (after 3 profitable years in a row), thank you very much

Glad to see that most clubs are now following suit in publishing their prices on their websites. This makes it easier for prospective customers to compare rates between clubs, and there's plenty of choice out there now.

But easy on - no need for personal attacks ....... if you feel so strongly about something you should have the courage to say who you are, rather than hiding behind an alias.

Any club that doesn't balance its books and has used up its reserves will be faced with the same combination of choices - increase income, slash costs to the bone, levy members or close shop altogether.

My guess is that quite a few are in this boat already and more will follow in 2012. The customer is king right now.
