    LIDL is great.

OP's story is a bit dodgy though. Unless, as cloneslad suggested, the OP wasn't putting the stuff in the trolley herself, but rather waiting for the cashier to do it for her. In that case, the people in the queue would have been justified complaining about the OP, unless she has some disability that renders her incapable of stacking her own trolly.
I doubt that's the case though, because one fills one's own trolly in Tesco too.

Care to fill us in on the rest of the details, OP?

I was packing as she was throwing the groceries at me and also trying to control my two year old, who was trying his best to escape for freedom from the trolly seat.

so yeah, I was probably pretty stressed on top of having other customers moan at me for having too much shopping, which really didn't help.

Could I have handled it better in hindsight? Probably yes. However at the time, walking out was preferable to launching a tin of baked beans at a middle aged woman in a shopping queue.

You have never shopped in lidl (leedel) before have you op.
You need to move your goods fast as they will be packed quickly.
Its lidl store policy to get you moving quickly.
You pay less so you should expect less.
I love going in to do the weekly shop...in and out in 5 mins....no annoying women blocking up the isles gawping at stuff they are not gonna buy.
Also I like to have the car rolling out of the parking spot as im closing the door/belting up

I would have put my shopping in the trolley a good bit slower just to annoy the other people.

OP needs to relax and take a xanax or something.

Why should you give a **** what people think of the supermarket you shop in..

I find Aldi better for steaks, icecreams, and even bread than tesco's variety.

its also much better value than the other supermarket giants.

I shop in lidl every week and in Dunnes Store's as well. Anything like that just never happened to me and my trolley is usually very full.
You can find stupid people with no manners everywhere, its not reserved for lidl! If I think about it, its even the opposite few things like that happened to me in Tesco, so it was just a bad day.

So due to being stoney broke, I decided this week to forgo my usual weekly shop in Tesco and decided to save a few quid and shop at LIDL instead for the first time.

After filling up the trolly, I went up to the checkout and started putting the stuff on the conveyer. A few people then started lining up behind me and it was then the muttering started.

Some auld hag said loudly: "Your wan is taking her time" and huffed. Then another woman said "Jesus, how much shopping has she at all?" (I had a weeks worth of groceries, about 3/4 of a trolly full). They all just stood there and glared at me like I was the anti-Christ.

I looked at the checkout girl who was just throwing the groceries into the trolly with a miserable head on her. I said to her, "Er, why is everyone staring at me like I've just murdered someone?" to which she just shrugged and carried on throwing the shopping into the trolly.
Eventually, sick of the people staring and tutting I just said "Fu*k this, I'll just get out of ye're way will I?" and walked out, leaving the shopping behind in the trolley.

Seriously, are people who shop and work in LIDL usually this ignorant or am I just totally unaware of some secret LIDL code of conduct that's supposed to be adhered to?

    It's a bad bad place....

Leaving a trolley full of shopping for some minimum wage worker to have to put away is a much more ignorant thing to do.
LIDL is a great to shop in and if episodes like this mean that people like you steer clear then so be it!

LIDL wages are actually above minimum.

Also just because you are on minimum wage it doesn't mean you can be a passive aggressive twat about it.

I'm glad you find LIDL such a great place to shop.

By all means, continue to enjoy shopping there without people like me to get in your way :)

This is just ridiculous how some people think they are "too good to shop in lidl".. I hope you have other things to be proud of in your life!

I've been to LIDL a good few times to pick up a few pieces here and there, it was just the first time I'd done a proper weekly shop there.

Seriously though, very friendly staff in my local Lidl and as for my fellow shoppers, everyone seems to let others with only a few bits & pieces cut in ahead of them. I enjoy the place.

    This.

I've experienced more of this at Lidl than what the OP describes. In fairness I wouldn't be buying a trolley full or minding a 2yr old. If those behind the OP had only 1 or 2 items they may have (rightly / wrongly) expected similar treatment even though it's first come / first served.

Throwing the toys out of the pram (or leaving shopping behind and walking out) seems a bit of an over reaction though. Thread reminds me of those who book cheap flights with Ryanair and then moan about the lack of service.

The problem with LIDL when I have shopped there is that every time I arrive to the till there is a huge queue, because the store is too cheap to employ more till staff.

    You're absolutely spot on there.

Out of the available 5 checkouts in he store, only two were operating. I've noticed this whenever I've been in there - they always seem really understaffed for a busy supermarket.

Shop in Lidl all the time and I've never experienced this - sometimes if you've a full trolley worth of stuff that you're loading onto the belt and the person behind you only has a few bits, you'll say 'you go ahead' - chances are that they'll be checked out before you get your stuff all loaded so it's doesn't delay you and spreads the karma of love - everyone's a winner.

I have noticed the checkout speed is way quicker, but you tend to get used to that - when I go to Tescos or Supervalue it always seems like the checkout people are working in slow motion - it's amazing how quickly you can adapt to 'Lidl-speed'.

If people behind me were moaning I'd probably either ignore them or give them my 'ice-hard death stare' - I wouldn't just walk out of the place though.

I did actually let two people go ahead of me who only had a few items, but I couldn't let everyone go in fairness.

My little boy was trying desperately to escape from the trolly and I just wanted to get out of there!

See... that's not what you said the first time. You should have specified. Had I known the cashier was actually throwing groceries at you and your child, I would no doubt have been much more sympathetic.
I'm just relieved that the people behind you in the queue didn't start throwing their groceries at you as well.

That's a good point - I have never seen more than 2 checkouts attended at any one time in any Lidl or Aldi despite nearly all having 4 or 5 checkouts. Just wonder why they have them if they never intend to use them!

+1, to be honest, i'd imagine any mutterings from people behind OP in the Q were grumpy people because there was only 1 or 2 checkouts attended.

Go to Lidl a fair bit, always long queues in the evening but every now and again they'll open a 3rd checkout. dont mind queuing a bit extra though for the savings.

I've been to Aldi and Lidl numerous times and for whatever reason Lidl is always slower at the checkouts even if the line is about the same.

I've actually noticed the same! I love the bakery in Lidl but I much prefer the rest of the selection that Aldi has. Staff in Aldi generally are quite friendly as long as you are putting your stuff away as quickly as they are scanning it!

I'm sure no member of staff was throwing any groceries at her. As mentioned above Lidl check outs work at a much faster pace than the bigger ones and people need to realize how this system works. i.e. have all your groceries on the belt and re-pack them away from the till. This speeds up the process which means people are served quicker, hence less staff employed, hence less overheads for LIDL which enables them to pass on the savings via much lower prices.

And maybe she should try to control her child in public better.

I am sorry about your experience , I wouldn't blame you for walking out, shopping is hard and extra hard trying to shop with your child. Was this lidl in town? Many of the staff are not friendily and ignorant. I noticed this in particular with a good few of the eastern europeans working there, just saying 'hello' when you say hello to them and 'thank you', that is basic maybe they hate their job, I don't know. Although there is always a few of the staff that are friendily and helpful aswell. I shop in there at times and when i was looking for an item on several occassions, the staff I was were not helpful It felt like you were bothering them by asking them so I don't ask anymore if I can't find anything I will trying find it myself or ask another customer. I was in there a few times when there was a staff member cleaning the floor with this cleaning machine, he was going through the aisles nearly hitting older customers and women with buggys who were stuggling to get their shopping done. Another time a sauce jar was broken on the floor I told a staff member and they didn't as much as acknowledge it to say 'thanks' or 'i will see about it'. It was just an 'ok' reply. Anyone should prepare themselves for shopping there, it is a unique shopping experience because nothing surprises me at this stage.

That's a bizarre experience, I shop in Lidl Tuam fairly regular, some people fill their trolley to over flowing and it never occurred to me that these people could be seen as doing something wrong. I've always found the staff pleasant (they always say hi). Either your from a scummy part of the country or there's something missing out of this storey because that storeys just weird.

How dare you. Seriously. You haven't the faintest notion what the hell you're talking about.

I said I was trying to get out of there as fast as possible because my toddler was trying to stand up in the trolly (there were no harnesses on them) and I was trying to get him to sit down for his own safety, whilst packing bags at the same time. How does that equate to not controlling him exactly? I was doing my best.
