If you think Lidls is bad, whatever you do don't go to Aldis. You need to be a spider there to keep up with checkout person.

Where was this Lidl, Its nothing to do with it being a cheaper place to shop its the way its set up, one person per till until the bell rings when the queue builds up.

It's quite efficient and maybe OP was taking their time a bit, just saying this usually doesn't happen.

And I hope you weren't just waiting for the assistant to put the groceries in the trolley, you both put them in as quickly as possible and then go to the shelves along the window and rearrange your things into bags.

My mother nearly lost the plot last week when a checkout operator asked the old lady in front of her to just put stuff in the trolley as it was scanning through and then sort into bags on the shelf at the back of the checkouts because he didn't have the time to wait for her.

They actually have big signs at the tills explaining the procedure but some people choose to ignore this.I prefer to put the stuff in the trolly and pack it in bags at my leisure rather than doing it at the till-seems like when you pack at the till everyone is staring at you wishing you'd hurry up.

    A) you dont know that you dont back your bags at the tills

    b) you take offense from people you dont know and thus blame a whole chain of stores on peoples tut tutting.

    c) you opened a thread on both of the items above.

I don't personally like the way they treat their customers like cattle. No matter how much cheaper some of the goods on sale are, it costs nothing to be polite and friendly.

The reason people seemed to be tut-tutting was because, as it turns out, I was committing the ultimate sin of packing my bags at the till while they were being scanned through. This is normal practice to me and I wasn't aware of LIDL etiquette that says this is the wrong thing to do.

Exactly, they have jobs because you and people like you shop there.

Not to mention depressing atmosphere in the place, a bit of music wouldn't kill any one.

I've just realised that's another reason I like the German supermarkets, I don't endure dodgy covers of already dodgy songs whining overhead whilst I look for yoghurt.

And the reason people shop there is because it's cheaper than the places where you can pack your bags at the till especially with the hold on the 2% VAT in Lidls. The reason they can make it cheaper is because it's no frills including faffing around at the till packing your bags.

Ah sure, what do we know? We're only the paying customers.... we don't have the right to expect good prices AND good service too, now do we?

Both Lidl and Aldi are great. We spend approx €200 per week between them, trolley jammed and have never heard anybody complain. I think the problem in this country is pure snobbery. Now for some music. :D:D

I know but that is how many of the staff seem to treat many of their customers, they could of told you that you pack your bags when you leave the til, that is basic.

What would happen if many of them left and shopped in Dunnes which is far better than lidl for prices and quality. A good few of them would lose their jobs and have to go back to Poland/eastern europe.

Who is going shopping to faff around? The point of shopping is you are going to buy things you need. If you want to pack your bag at tils you can, it's up to the customer, people are people; we are not all robots who are fast at everything especially who may have a disability or have to take if easy for pregnant women or if you are older you can become physically slower.

+1 to the Express Checkout idea (once its enforced).

Also faster processing of laser cards might help. The machines are so bloody slow. As for the cards, its always some twat with a can of beans and a loaf of bread thats too lazy to fumble for change while in the queue that uses them.

Other than that, I love my local LIDL.

The self service checkout in Tesco is worse. Other customers walk right up beside you and start staring at every move you make. They then start trying to scan their shopping before you've even finished putting your items in a bag, then they look bewildered that the scanner won't work for them.

Exactly, they have jobs because you and people like you shop there.

This is a stupid attitude to have.

They don't have a job because of people like you and the OP. The OP doesn't shop there, she almost did once but took all the items from the shelves and stormed off without buying them.

Just because you are a member of the public, does not entitle you to pick and choose their practices for them. If the choose to impliment an efficient way of the customer packing their bags away from the till then that is their business practice.

Frankly, I have no idea why all supermarkets don't do this. Everytime i'm in Tesco and I have to pack my bag it's like a race against time before the next customers' shopping starts flying towards me.

Everybody else seems to be able to live with the fact that Lidl have their own way of doing things. So it's because of EVERYONE ELSE that those people have their jobs. The people who shop there and don;t moan when someone doesn't come up behind them and give them a back-rub as they're paying.
Ah sure, what do we know? We're only the paying customers.... we don't have the right to expect good prices AND good service too, now do we?

You DID have good service. The lady at the till did nothing wrong. You expected her to jump to your defence because you were a little bit miffed at people being rude. I find it strange that you are old enough to have a child yet not mature enough to be able to deal with people in this situation but instead storm off in a huff.

The girl did her job. In Lidl there are signs explaining their service. it is not a fault of hers or the store's but of YOURS.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,822 ✭✭✭sunflower27

I really can't believe you walked off in a huff because a couple of women had a moan about how much stuff you had.

You should have said loudly to the checkout person as they were scanning, 'sorry, I forgot something' and excused yourself past the misery guts' behind you and took your time getting a cheap bar of soap or something.

And then, when you finally come back and they are red-faced with rage, smile sweetly and say 'ah, I always forget something'.

And then take your time packing as well :)

So wait, do you not then think that it is a better idea to have a big area for packing your bags at your own leisure? You know, like in Lidl?

Lidl being "Lower class" is such a load of shíte.. The deals in there do be great, the food is delish and for some things it's much better than Tesco.

I'm on a comfortable wage and I shop in Lidl in Rathmines, there's a Tesco and Dunnes just up the road... simply because I think it's much better.

You sound quite paranoid and childish.
Leaving a trolley full of shopping behind and storming out like a child throwing a tantrum because of some percieved slight by the other customers is extremely immature, don't you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,012 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Lidl is great because of the fast checkout in my opinion. Just put weighty, more robust goods at the front of the belt, get ready with your bag and load it in. Easy! If you can't do this, then bring your trolley up, and load the stuff into the trolley again and pack at the dedicated area. If you can't do this, don't shop in Lidl. It's ****ing childsplay.

Actually Tesco has all their comparison prices published in store. Lidl generally is not cheaper (apart from the 2% VAT) and Tesco is better quality.

That's sad that you have to rush to pack you bags in tesco, if they start flying towards you when you are not finished packing your bags then that is their problem not your problem. Why would give in the ignorant people, killing yourself packing your bags because they are behaving impatiently? What if you are an older person who may not physically able to pack fast or you have a disability or have a young child with you.

Well I know a few people who used to shop in a particular lidl every week but don't anymore because it's they find it a horrible place to shop so it that was many people, jobs would be lost in lidl that is a fact.

    1) Dunnes is no way near as good value.

    2) I'm sure your ignorance means you don't realize that you are a racist. Not all staff are from "Poland/Eastern Europe". Eastern Europe are more often than not friendlier than most Irish staff. However if they do seem to be a bit unfriendly it's probably because of the way they are treated by racists like yourself.

Well, I am not an older person. I am young. And I don't "give into ignorant people". How on earth do you know that the people in my hypotesis are ignorant?

I am considerate of the people in the queue and the people who work there. I wish to pack my stuff as fast as I can so that the people behind me can go about their business quicker and the girl working there can do her job properly. Nothing wrong with that.

If Tesco has a dedicated packing area like Lidl I would happily go there and do it at my leisure.
Well I know a few people who used to shop in a particular lidl every week but don't anymore because it's they find it a horrible place to shop so it that was many people, jobs would be lost in lidl that is a fact.

Not really, but each to their own, eh?

Your actions are absolutely of someone who is immature, childish and easily offended.

In fairness, you went into a queue with a trolley full of shopping, not bothering to follow the correct procedure with a child you couldn't control.

No wonder you were pissing everybody off.

    Your shameful behaviour is embarrassing.

Yea it is but it is up to the customer themselves. For people who don't have trollies or shoppers then they should be allowed to pack bags at their own pace at the til especially if they are older or have a disability because it would be very hard for them to have the stamina to rush and lift objects for one place and if they have to walk far carrying a bag of shopping to their bus stop.

I agree that Lidl is not as cheap as it once was in comparison and that in terms of quality in my opinion it not comparable to its German brother, Aldi, but to state that the Tesco products which match Lidl for price are better quality is most definitely stretching things.
