    This raises an interesting question.

I've been replacing the batteries in my Snes carts. Went one step further and asked Enternow to put battery holders in the nicer ones. They worked out really great.

There were a good few RPGs in there. However I think the most expensive game he did would have been Chrono Trigger or something along that price level.

Nothing to the value of almost €200 though.

OwaynOTT -will you be playing Earthbound? Or is it just for collectors sake?

As if you are playing it, the battery may need to be changed. I wonder how that would affect the value of the cart?

I'm a collector and I can only see it adding value myself as it adds functionality. However to others they in fact see it as devaluing it.

I suppose it depends to if you're going to sell it on or be buried with the thing :pac:

If you are replacing the battery, taping one in works fine...but for something as fancy as that, a CR2032 battery holder would be the way to go.

I'll be going for an egyptian style burial.

I'll be playing it but not for a while yet. My secret of mana which I've had since the 90's is still fine, has a save that must be on for at least 8 years, so hopefully this will be similar.
If it needs a battery I will get one as functionality is a must.

How much would it affect the value though? Just in case

Well that's the thing, it'll add value for some people, but take away for others.

I would like to hope that for most it adds value. I've heard people saying that changing the battery no longer makes it 'original' and it's somehow a hack.

    My arse!

My Secret of Mana battery was still live too, but I replaced it anyway. I'd rather replace it now and have it working for another 5-10 years than have it die half way through a playthrough!

Actually, I did lose that save in the end. Damn Snes floppy drive backup tool wipes SNES cart saves if you leave a cart in the slot while loading a game from the floppy! Gutted so I was :(

And people like that are why I get angry.

I want to get Earthbound because I want to play through it. And I dont want to use emulation because getting the game is half the fun and the other half is playing it

You get some really anal people when it comes to things being 'original'.

CSP2 boards is an interesting one. I would be of the opinion that a phoenixed one is more desirable and would pay more for it. I don't want to worry about changing the battery every few years to keep it from dying.

Others consider this to be a total hack and as bad as a pirate board. They continue to solder new batteries onto their boards every 5 or so years.

Some even see replacing a suicide battery as a hacked board. Wtf?!

Those are the same gob****es you see crying over a ruined cart sue to battery leakage. It gets to ridiculous levels at that point, a battery is an externally added on part to the cart pcb...changing it in no way makes the cart any less authentic.

Adding in the battery holder, while a no brainer, might not be looked upon greatly by collectors as its a non original part gone in. But in the long run it saves soldering/desoldering in batteries over the years.

Personally it wouldn't bother me about the holder being fit, but changing the battery itself is a necessity, not a luxury :)

To be honest, I did it to stop this situation from occuring.

    2020

Oisin at Enternow's front door - 'Hi Enternow, remember me? can you solder in some new batteries please?'
    Enternow - '/sigh - 'sure thing'

    2030

Oisin at Enternow's front door - 'Hi Enternow, remember me? can you solder in some new batteries please?'
    Enternow - '/sigh - 'sure thing'

    2040

Oisin at Enternow's front door - 'Hi Enternow, remember me? can you solder in some new batteries please?'
Enternow arrives on a hoverboard - '/sigh - 'sure thing'

    2050

Oisin at Enternow's grave - 'Hi Enternow, remember me? can you solder in some new batteries please?'
    Enternow - Silence
    Oisin :(

    2060

Oisin at Enternow's house after Enternow has been brought back to life due to the wonders of modern medicine -'Hi Enternow, remember me? can you solder in some new batteries please?'
Enternow - BATTERY HOLDERS, EVER HEARD OF THEM?! HUH!?!!?

I've absolutely no time for collectors that buy games with no intention of ever playing them. They're usually the ones that are against the replacing of batteries and such.

Would these be similar to the people who own little but sealed games?
There to look at and admire but not to play, or even sniff???

They don't even qualify as gamers, not even as casual gamers, they are hoarders, attaching little significance to the purpose of the item but obsessed with having them all.
They would suck at Pokemon, "Gotta Catch 'Em All"? Yep, and then put them away.... forever!

So, is o1s1n's post the first time anyone has ever predicted someone else's death on this forum :pac:

You just had to focus on the death prediction and not the hoverboard one, didn't you? :pac:

[OT]When I rented the Final Destination DVD as a wee lad, one of the extra features was a death clock. Gave it a whirl for a laugh, answering its queries honestly. Gave me some time in the 2020s or something. Gave it another go with fake, absurd answers. Got the exact same date. Got someone else to do it. They got a different date. Freak out.[/OT]

Finishing 2011 with a couple of 'grails'. I won't be receiving these until the new year I guess, thanks to the postal service this time of year.

I was going to get Dimahoo CPS2 but then I saw this:

    :D:D

Finally, another grail (and if it's not a grail, please tell me where to find another one, let alone one complete with obi strip and RC-OCD).Mentioned this one before, it's the reason I bought a Laserdisc player:

    What's the PCB?

The clue is in the company logo you can spot on the board in the photo. :D

(Just seeing if anyone guesses it. It's not something in the Cave price-range, but I do believe it is a grail regardless. And at the very least, I've very rarely seen it for sale...)

Lol too early for guessing games. I'll wait til someone with better eyesight turns up. :)

Speaking of PCBs, I snagged Great 1000 Mile Race for the princely sum of €33 posted.

Nice one! Is it a full kit or bare PCB? I think I scored mine for the same price, or there abouts. Mille Miglia 2 was slightly more expensive. If you buy it in future make sure you get the one with joystick control enabled as some boards will only allow a steering wheel. Check with the seller first.

As for the PCB, it's Mazinger Z. The logo I mentioned is the Banpresto logo on the top left of the board there. :)

It's still in South Korea at the moment so I haven't sniffed it yet. :(

Board is sold as tested and working. Got pics of it working too. Seller has a good rep so should be OK. If the worst happens there's always HobbyROM et al. :)

I actually realized what I'd written there after posting, but it's actually true, the PCB is in South Korea, of all places. Sadly it isn't a signed copy by 'the great leader'. :(

Why do the eeprom windows have letters on them? Someone trying to stop sunlight erasing them with the power of the alphabet?

I'd get them covered up as soon as the board arrives anyway.

Here's a comparison pic of the same board. You can see they all have white stickers.

Aye, I did some research on the seller and the PCB to make sure it was a legit board and it is. You can see under the E EPROM there is a white sticker too.

As far as I know, some have those letters on them to distinguish which EPROM is which, saving looking at minute text on the board I guess.

Maybe that's how it was shipped? Not sure on that one to be honest. Delighted all the same though as, as far as I know, it's a board that doesn't come up very often and it's a cool game. :)

EDIT: I suppose the stickers may also distinguish which chip is for which region? Europe, Korea, Japan? Although going by info on the board it has dips for World or Japan mode. The screenshots the seller showed me were of the game in World mode.

Naturally I'll be changing this to Japan mode for authenticity reasons.... followed by a quick sniff of the PCB. :D
