he's from the island of ireland alright but he's british and always will be! Don't see why he should get anymore media interest then if say lee westwood won for instance

He is a catholic northern irishman who carries a british passport. I'm sure your brethren would have been calling him a fenian or a taig growing up though ;).

He seems content enough being refered to as irish or british it doesn't seem to be a big deal.

Back to the golf though.... i hope he wins this one because if he cracked again after the masters it could become an issue.

He's not Irish if he doesnt see himself as Irish. Some In NI see themselves as Irish, some see themselves as Northern Irish, some identify more with the United Kingdom than with the Republic and vice versa. Some identify with both.
Luckily Golf like rugby is a bit above the tribalism, and if Rory wins, we in the South will claim him, as will the 2 tribes in NI, as will people in the United Kingdom, as will Europeans. He would be only the 4th different European to win a major in the past 50 majors.

Troll? Isn't it against the forum charter to insinuate someone is a troll?

Like rugby and boxing, golf in Ireland recognises no border. It's a four province sport. He is an Irish golfer.

Now apologise this instant.

he's British when he's winning, but Irish when he's losing.
at least according to the Beeb

Fact is fact guys

He is British at the end of the day, it's black and white technically speaking. End Of.

Nonetheless, some two rounds of golf he has produced.
I still don't think he's going to win though.

lads, is Sky Sports coverage of this upscaled on the HD channel? It doesn't look like true HD to me.

FFS, does this nationality shít have to be dragged up every time McIlroy is in contention? It's the same mongs every time too.

Who cares really? As a golf fan you should be lapping up the exhibition he has produced so far.

Ha - did anyone hear Monty commenting on the Y.E. group?

"There will be a few cameras following this group... the all Asian group... there'll be a few cameras here..."

Monty!

I don't see that as too bad, its just poking fun at their over use of cameras. Its like a joke about the irish drinking or yanks being noisy.

Harrington is after stuffing in a beauty to a few feet on 12, should be a birdie to go to -1.

Discussion of McIlroy's nationality is not for this tread nor this forum. Try Politics or maybe The Cuckoo's Nest.
To help avoid a weekend of clean-up on aisle 343, people who ignore the trolling sticky thread, the trolling announcement and this polite warning against the nationality black hole will be likely to get some time off so the rest of us can chew on the golf side of things.

Harrington and Garcias best showing in a major for some time, and yet their still about 10 shots behind.

Cut +4 at the moment.

McIlroy describes himself as Northern Irish. He specifically doesn't describe himself as Irish or British and he specifically asked to be photographed with the Ulster flag after the Ryder Cup. Graeme McDowell then suggested that he, McIlroy, Clarke and Harrington should be photographed with all of the relevant flags.

McIlroy seems to be from a new generation who look beyond ludicrous stereotypes of "Irishmen" being solely obsessed with GAA and "Britishmen" being solely obsessed with rugby and hockey. McIlroy's a massive rugby fan which for previous generations of Northern Catholics would have been a huge no no. All progress in my view.

Now let's get back to the golf. Great shot there by Yang. Serious dangerman.

he did say that to poke fun at himself, pointing out with a laugh that he would go to pieces in that group!!

Hope Rory can keep it steady for next 2 days, stunning first two days.

From a scan through the thread I can see as expected the same idiotic posts are already coming out from the same keyboard warriors who claimed he would never compete at a high level again in golf on the masters thread. Praying for him not to win so they can come up with outlandish reasons why they know better then one of the best golfers in thw world.

I don't envy the mods having to read the same old tripe at every big event from the same kind of person..

Fans' opinions are a part of sport. I sincerely hope that Rory McIlroy wins multiple Majors but I'm still unconvinced that he'll even win one. I'm entitled to my opinion as are the McIlroy "believers". It's a considered opinion based on years of watching the game and playing it to a reasonably good level.

Yang will do well to get up and down from there...

What a fantastic round Marcel Siem has going. 5 under for today's round after shooting 79 yesterday.

Chipped in a monster off the green just there. He's always pumped up, I'll give him that.

Lowry is going to have to find 2 birdies in his closing 2 holes to make the cut. Shame after yesterdays effort.

Parred the 8th, McIlroy has made no need for the 10 shot rule. I was expecting +6 to make the cut before start of play.

Harrington gives a shot straight back at the par 3 13th.

about time for garcia. he's been in a sulking mood since the Open 2007 when harrington beat him in the play off.

I'd say he was happy enough winning the players championship in 2008, probably not so happy when losing the 2008 PGA to Paddy though :)

he is still sulking. he should be very happy with his total of 2 under and yet in his interview he sounded so pessimistic and depressed.
