Just came in there a while ago and saw that leaderboard......astonished. That double bogey might remind him he still has a lot of work to do, poor choice of shot.

    1) The slums of Chicago are full of 1st and 2nd round leaders.

    2) Leading a Major after three rounds and $3 will get you an Americano in Starbucks.

Too many wild statements in this thread about Rors. He's done incredibly well so far but we've a guy with a seemingly unassailable lead who has form when it comes to throwing away seemingly unassailable leads.

Fingers crossed but there's a long long way to go.

I blame twitter for that double bogey on the last anyway

Great shooting from Rory, two rounds of par will see him home from here. Although that last hole just shows how dangerous a US Open course can be.

Here's hoping the other 3 lads can make the cut as well, it would be great to have all 4 competing high up the leaderboard.

And the award for this thread's most ridiculous statement goes to Gnobe...

i wouldnt agree with the statement made by Gnobe but in fairness one of Tiger's best mates Mark O'Meara stated that Rory has a much better swing and as much natural talent as Tiger did in his late teens/early twenties.

Even the whole Sky team was saying it!!

This was the most enjoyable round I've watched in a long time, the double at the last was just a minor blip, it cancelled out the bit of good fortune he had to get the eagle on the par 4......

I think its far too soon to start declaring Rory the winner though, he needs to produce 2 solid rounds of golf to win it from here, regardless of how many shots he is ahead after today.

I think its a big test for him from here on, the bastards at his press conference tonight will remind him again about Augusta (just like they were last night), I'm sure it won't bother him though.

Just like everyone from Malin to Mizen, I really hope he wins it.

That 'double' might actually help him, ie. to bring him back down to earth a little !! as he has time to recouperate and think about it. When things went awol at the Masters, he had no time to think, he just went down like the Titanic.

Well done Robert Rock! 70-71. He'd be right in the mix if not for young McIlroy.

Absolutely...great effort considering his lack of preparation. Comes across as a very likeable guy as well, I was delighted for him when he won last week.

Poor start from Lowry, on the cut mark now.

If the USGA set up the course ridiculously difficult tomorrow in order to limit the winning score, Rory could find himself even further clear of the field by the time he tees off. Can only help with taking the pressure off if there's nobody really coming at him. I can't see it being a birdie fest anyway.

At 22, Woods had won a Major, a PGA Tour money list title, 6 PGA tour titles (excluding his Major) and he was world number one.

To date, McIlroy's won one PGA Tour event and collapsed spectacularly when contending for a Major.

Woods and Nicklaus are in a different stratosphere to anyone else - McIlroy, Mickelson or whoever.

Prodigious talents come and go...in the early 80s Hal Sutton was proclaimed the "Bear Apparent" by the US press and predicted to eclipse Jack's record. Obviously that didn't happen but Sutton forged an excellent career for himself.

Making wild claims about McIlroy ignores the history of the game...judge him 25 years from now.

i know little about golf but look at the leaderboard!
all the big names are nowhere, so you have to think rory's got it in the bag.
    he's way far to ahead!
ye yang is the only one who could make a match of this, and he's 8 shots behind!

its all over, might as well start etching his name on the trophy!

Statements like this reflect a total lack of knowledge of the history of the game.

There are two rounds to go in what's generally regarded as the toughest of the four Majors. The runaway leader has form when it comes to spectacular collapses from seemingly unassailable positions.

If McIlroy has a 5 shot lead heading into the back nine on Sunday I'll still fear for him.

just look at his username in fairness :D

Dont know where you are getting collapses out of. The Masters and ?

By no way is the tournament over but surely Rory has one hand on the trophy. The players behind him will have to chase on a coarse that does not allow it so they are relying on a collapse from Rory and at this moment in time that doesnt look like happening but long way to go yet.

the thing is that all the quality golfers are nowhere near him,
he could shot a 76 tomorrow and sunday, and be still win by a few shots!

The European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre springs to mind...a four shot lead going into the final round only to collapse (missing a few tiddlers) if my memory serves me right.

Saying that he's one hand on the trophy is just ridiculous, especially given his previous achievements as a front runner. Mental scar tissue shouldn't be discounted.

while i'll celebrate mcilroy's form today, i'll remain cautious until sunday, golf is a cruel mistress. the staff at the u.s open might have one or two tricks up their sleeves for the weekend and certainly won't like the fact rory tore the course apart, which hasn't been done since tiger woods in 2000

Decent shout with the European Masters. it was the short putting that let him down again alright. He had a lead alright but he did shoot level par in that final round which i wouldnt consider a collapse. He was also only 19 years of age.

This is just wonderful. We could have four golfers from the island of Ireland going into the weekend. I just remember a few years back watching the sports news on RTE, all we had was "..and best of the Irish was.." way down the field. Brilliant stuff altogether.

he's from the island of ireland alright but he's british and always will be! Don't see why he should get anymore media interest then if say lee westwood won for instance

Good quality stream here from Sky Sports 2

Need Veetle installed (www.veetle.com) but worth installing (less than 1 minute) for the quality.

    lol

Even Ian Paisley calls himself an Irishman FFS..

"I was born in the island of Ireland. I have Irish traits in me - we don't all have the traits of what came from Scotland, there is the celtic factor... and I am an Irishman because you cannot be an Ulsterman without being an Irishman" Ian Paisley

Hope Rory does the job but it's far from over at this stage - just wish I didn't have to listen to that half wit Robert Lee over the next few days.

You always hear Rory along with McDowell describe themselves as Irish along with being Northern Irish. They're representing Ireland in golf and both always allude to being Irish.

McIlrory even played a bit of GAA when he was younger according to an interview with his father. He was even waving both the Irish flag and the N.Irish flag on the balcony after the Ryder Cup. Why should it matter what part of the island he's from. He's representing the island of Ireland.

Where are the mods. Is this a troll ?

He's not Irish if he doesnt see himself as Irish. Some In NI see themselves as Irish, some see themselves as Northern Irish, some identify more with the United Kingdom than with the Republic and vice versa. Some identify with both.
Luckily Golf like rugby is a bit above the tribalism, and if Rory wins, we in the South will claim him, as will the 2 tribes in NI, as will people in the United Kingdom, as will Europeans. He would be only the 4th different European to win a major in the past 50 majors.
