20 players finishing under par must surely have been a U.S open record as well?

Surprisingly no, record is 28 at the Medinah Country Club in 1990, Congressional 2011 is second on the list now, with 11 at The Country Club in 1988 being the next highest

I sincerely hope that Rory McIlroy wins multiple Majors but I'm still unconvinced that he'll even win one. I'm entitled to my opinion as are the McIlroy "believers". It's a considered opinion based on years of watching the game and playing it to a reasonably good level.

    :)

Did Stenson whack the club after his shot or did it snap when he hit the shot?!

Good finish from Stenson in the end but he was lucky not to slice a finger clean off, shafts are super sharp when broken.

My thoughts go out to Sean Bateman at this time. I look forward to your return to the golf forum for the comedy value.

I thoroughly detest people like him who post such utter drivel with such conviction. If anybody who watches golf in any meaningful way hasn't been able to recognise the rare ability of Rory McIlroy over the last few years, then I would suggest choosing a new sport to watch. Indeed, stay away from sport altogether.

If it's comedy you're after then venture over to the United superthread in the soccer forum. He's been there for a few weeks winding people up and talking spray.

This thread was relatively good compared to the one for the Masters which was possibly the worst I've ever seen.

Can't wait for the Open, to see where Rory goes with this. Hopefully he can capitalise on it and not stall for a few months with all the inevitable publicity that goes with it

    A stat I found amusing:

    Career European Tour Money List

    #31 Rory McIlroy €8,125,432
    #32 Sir Nick Faldo €8,001,656

Just shows the difference in the prize money these days

It was about that time that a member of Holywood told me about him and said he would be the next superstar of golf........of course I didn't believe him.

Being a Liverpool fan I have no cause to visit the United thread. I'm sure there's a hell of a lot more comedy in there than just Bateman's :-)

Tough call on The Open, I don't know how he'll be. I'd say he's not shy of a celebration. If he doesn't contend then he sure as hell will in most majors from now on.

I'm more interested in seeing how he does in a tight major. I was always of the belief that in order to win one he'd have to build up a big lead and make his way home from there, which he's done now. The next challenge is to get over the line in a tight finish. I suspect he might have another collapse in him in that scenario but eventually he will win a tight one and after that it will be a question of how many he'll win.

    Fantastic performance.

After the masters people made the rather unfair suggestion that he was a choker. I just hope people dont go to the other extreme now and expect performances of this nature at every major championship in which he participates.

and thus ends my betting for rory :( 11/2 to win the british open. although 14/1 on tiger woods (who ever he is) sounds rather good. think i may go with jason day on this one.

This comment could make me look rather ridiculous by the time the open comes around but I'll be avoiding Tiger at 14's. He simply doesn't look like a prospective winner of the next major at the current time.

Jason Day looks a more attractive proposition in terms of betting at 40\1 although his best finish of 60th at the open might not inspire confidence
