Latest rumour as to why PSN is down

    http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/25/rumor-rebug-custom-firmware-enabled-free-psn-downloads-for/#comments
According to PSX-Scene former moderator, "chesh," the now six-day-long PlayStation Network outage is the result of a particularly exploitative custom firmware (CFW) modification for PS3. In a post on Reddit, chesh claims that a CFW known as "Codename: Rebug" had given its users the ability to log into PSN as if they were doing so from a developer console (or "debug unit").

As a result, chesh contends, this same exploit allowed its users to add funds from "dummy" credit card accounts into their PSN wallets, ostensibly giving them the ability to "unlock" (read: steal) certain PlayStation Store content. Joystiq's research into the purported exploit has turned up multiple tutorials detailing the process, which appears alarmingly easy to execute on consoles running the Rebug CFW.

The hack does not allow its users to access the credit card or other personal information of PSN users, chesh adds. Nevertheless, as we reported earlier today, Sony is working to rule out information theft as part of its investigation during the maintenance outage in which the company is also implementing new security measures.

Sony has not yet responded to our request for comment on this story

I just loaded up my save of Assassins Creed 2 so I could grind for the platinum and all my trophies for the game were deleted. Probably has nothing to do with the PSN outage, but be careful just in case.

In the BBC report from the post by Thrill there is a line.

"Angry gamers have flooded blogs, forums and Twitter with complaints.............Others, however, were more accommodating. "Keep up the good work Sony... take your time," wrote deltaman-3."

I think the reporter might have missed the tone here or am I too cynical?

Am I the only one reminded of the Vs with Sony's continued 'thank you for your patience' speech?

I hope that Sony are at least going to throw Plus subsribers an extra month over this.

Would be nice but I wouldn't hold your breath!

Doubt we'll get much to be honest. There's probably something in the T'c and C's that I just didn't bother reading.

    Hey,
Seeing that there was some sort of "external intrusion", might be no harm to keep an eye on the old credit card statements.. We don't know if any card numbers were taken...

No details were taken. The hack was a custom firmware version that allowed the user to trick the system into thinking that the user had unlimited funds for the PSN store so they could download whatever they wanted. Sony found out that more people were doing it and they didnt know how big the problem was so they pulled the plug. No-one would steal details if they already had access to infinite funds.

I wouldn't say that really because the infinite funds are just for the PS Store, whereas people's credit card details could be used to buy anything.

Exactly. Sony said it would be 1 or 2 days last Wednesday. Then they still haven't given us an ETA. If that guy worked for Sony surely they would have released a tweet/update by now?

so does anyone have any idea exactly what Sony are doing???

People are conning free unlimited funds for PS Store..........Sony shut off access to PSN worldwide........................so are they adding some new software to prevent this, or just waiting to catch the people doing it and give them a ban??

Is there a legitimate reason why millions of harmless gamers are being left in the dark?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

They're completely rebuilding the PSN, apparently that takes a few days or something

So what happens a month or so down the line when this so called "new" Network gets hacked again......

Well if they do the rebuilding right then it shouldn't get hacked again :/

They're hoping the new security features will prevent that. Happening once is unfortunate, twice would be a disaster for Sony.

It shouldn't -- that's why they are rebuilding the PSN.

Haha if there was ever a few days for the PSN to be down it was the past few. Bank holiday weekend with great weather meant I barely touched my PS3. Also I bought Bad Company 2 last week (I know I'm only a little late) and I'm still going through the single player campaign so I don't intend on being online for another couple days at least.

Well obviously the idea is that won't happen....
