In saying that, I really hope they have more stuff like 'Pretty Visitors' on this album. It seemed to me like a blend of the new and old in one song, and it's my favourite off Humbug.

Turner said the new album is supposed to be a mix of all 3 albums,have to wait and see though.

Why not they are long gone and good ridance may i say. They only jump on the band wagon whenever a cool Highly tipped bands come along.

Coz without the fans who liked the first album they wouldn't be able to release the sh1te they're releasing at the moment

EDIT: Sh1te is too far but the current stuff is nowhere near as good as the early stuff, and I should point out I usually hate the "Ah their early stuff was the best" type of fans.

Yeah but people who say "I prefer their early stuff" normally are doing it to be elitist in a "I knew them before they were popular" kind of way. It doesn't work like that when the bands first release became huge.

I think in this case the band are probably referring to people who only want to hear their big songs from the first album and nothing else - people who haven't even listened to their other albums.

I don't think the "Mardy Bum" fans will be pleased with their future gigs, I personally think they are getting sick of those tunes and want to focus on their new sound which is refreshing.
There's nothing worse than a band putting out the same record every year. 4 albums in 5 years is impressive for such a young band and for their sound to change so dramatically. Fair play to them.

If the "Mardy Bum" fans want them to go back to their roots then they are going to be disappointed, keep listening to the first album - it's a great album with a few anthems of the 2000s but these guys aren't going back, they're going forward.

I don't think anyone expects them to continue writing tunes like Mardy Bum but I think some fans who say they prefer the early stuff, like myself, just don't like the direction their taking. Its not that we want them to continue writing Mardy Bums, just don't like these Brick by Bircks and Don't Sit Downs (is that what its called?

). I'd have Secret Door as one of my favorite AM songs, I'd prefer if they went more in that direction rather than this raw rock QOTSA inspried stuff that I just feel they don't pull of very well

The last time they played here at the O2 you could split the crowd who were diehard fans and the ones who were there just for the first album tunes. Basically the bandwagon jumpers who jump on when there's the "it" band.

its **** to you for me its some of the best stuff they done for me. Humbug is one of the most under rated records in years

If they were bandwagon fans they would be gone by now.

I'm not a huge Humbug fan, for me its the worst album. You think its very good. I don't see how that makes you more of a fan than me? Im still going to see them at Oxegen, V festival and their stand alone gig when them come. I dont like the 2 songs off this new album but I will still go out and buy it/download it. I wouldnt catagorise that as a being a "bandwagon fan".

I hated 'Brick by brick', sounded like a demo without half the instruments. I like 'Dont Sit Down........' though, its a bit quirky with the simple delivery of lyrics over the riff. Although i hope he's slowed down delivery of lyrics isn't constant on the album, what set Alex apart from other singers was his delivery of songs, I hope that's not watered and dumbed down on this album.

I much prefer the first two albums to Humbug/first 2 SIAS singles, when I go to see them live, the songs I enjoy most are the ones from those first two albums. Does that not make me a diehard fan? By August of this year I will have seen them 6 times live. I've also met the band (and when I did meet them the one thing myself and my mates said to them was that they should play A Certain Romance live). I consider myself to be a diehard fan, I can still criticise them though, doesn't make me less of a fan of the band

Got to say I like Don't Sit Down, but that Brick by Brick is utter tosh.
Humbug grew on me, I like it now, when I first listened to it my reaction was "Omg they've turned into QOTSA" (who I like, but not what I expected/wanted from AM). I still prefer the first two albums though, and that's a personal opinion thing for everyone, nothing to do with jumping on bandwagons, the fact of the matter is their fans were fans of the music on the first two albums, and the third was very different, what do you expect? Those who were "bandwagoners" don't go to the new concerts, they've moved on to the next big thing, those who do are "die hard" fans, whatever their preference for the band's albums.

I listened to "Whatever.." today and my god, even now five years later it sounds fresh and urgent and exciting, that's something I didn't (and still don't) get from Humbug. I like Don't Sit Down though, and am looking forward to the new album, still trying to decide whether to go see them at Oxegen (unashamed fan of the festival set:D) or on new tour, can't afford both unfortunately.....

On a side note my mother met Miles Kane in the Fitzwilliam Thursday and Friday, she thought he was "your man from that monkeys band":D:D
(I'm still jealous of her though. She gets all the luck:mad::mad:)

Yeah, they played the O2 in November 2009. I think it was the last night of the tour.

(and I'm not trying to make excuses here, I did *not* like Humbug)
I think it's very stark, clean, simple, something of a statement, says exactly what the band wants it to say, and at the end of the day will stand out on a shelf in a record store (though who buys CDs anymore??)

Personally, while I see what people are saying about it not being artistic or original, I think if they are looking to make a statement with this album, about who they are, about their music, whatever, then this is the first and best step. At the end of the day sometimes simple is better, and this simplicity, to me, says more than any fancy detailed design.

I'm not a mad fan of Humbug, but I like that the Monkeys are not sticking with the same tried and tested formulae but are trying to change, they are young and still, like every other 20-something, trying to find their place in the world. Whether that change is successful or not I think we still have to see, at the end of the day the reason I still defend this band is that I think they are ridiculously talented on so may levels, but they need to learn to maximise that (sorry, I'm an Econ student) and also refine it, in the end they became so big so quickly their development is nothing is nothing like a normal band, it's sort of like like the Jackson 5, and (if not too crude a comparison to make, but I mean from the POV of growing up in the limelight) When they became famous they were only teenagers, and growing up in the public eye is never easy, I don't like everything they've done but, that's the nature of being/having a teenager, they strike out, find their own feet, rebel, swear, smoke, get high, get laid, and you love them nonetheless.

In the words of Voltaire (possibly) I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Personally, I like this cover. As I've said clean, simple, noticeable, makes a statement. I can see why some might not like it. However, I think we'll all agree, that at the end of the day, none of us *actually* give a **** about the album cover, we only care about whether or not we like the music, and that's the important thing. Hope it's as good as I know the Monkeys can be

New video speaks volumes about where this band are heading, they should focus less on trying to be cool by wearing shades and leather jackets and focus more on what got them where they are, clever lyrics and catchy tunes. From the two songs I've heard from this album so far they have neither. Hell even their album art is pretentious.

While I agree with what you say, particularly re riffs and lyrics, and the direction the band are going (which I don;t like and am sad about as they've been my favourite band since I first heard a demo in a mate's car in Ballinasloe in 2005), don't you think they'd be slagged for staying the same as they were when they were 20 years old? I think they would be, and rightly so, it's normal (esp at that age, & I suppose here I may be a little biased`) and sort of a rite of passage to rebel against what you are expected to be, them being an internationally recognised band does not stop them from being young 20-something lads)...But on the whole I agree w what you say and mean, the reason I fell in love w the band in the first place the combination of witty lyrics and "good tunes", we all know they;'re capable of it, I can only hope my teenager analogy is true and they''ll soon grow up into the band we all know Arctic Monkeys can be.
