I always rate my songs on windows media player. This is what I've gone with for the album:

    She's Thunderstorms - 4
    Black Treacle - 5
    Brick by Brick - 4
    Hellcat - 5
    Don't Sit Down - 3
    Library Pictures - 5
All My Own Stunts - 4
    Reckless Serenade - 5
    Piledriver - 4
    Love is a Laserquest - 4
Suck It an See - 5
    Thats Where You're Wrong - 5

Really loving the album after a few listens. The number of 5's. 4's and 3's is exactly the same as I had for Favorite Worst Nightmare, which is my favorite AM album. Really can't to get songs like Hellcat and Reckless in a festival atmosphere

This really is a fantastic album. Every Arctic Monkeys release always undergoes a probationary period with me, and my initial disappointment is always resolved after repeated listens. I loved Humbug, it was a fantastic album and I totally got what they were trying to do. It wasn't self-sabotage or an attempt to estrange or alienate their Mardy Bum fanbase, it was the result of four kids hanging out in the desert with Josh Homme, digesting Black Sabbath and **** loads of weed and producing some interesting sounds. It was a progression.

To me, this album sounds like a diversion of sorts, and that's by no means a bad thing. In certain respects, it's Humbug's polar opposite, sort of a reaction to the lacklustre response it generated, and it just works. The guitar work is sublime and oftentimes echoes the jangly busywork of Marr and Squire, the lyrics are still Turner's forte and leave a pleasing bittersweet taste in the mouth, the rhythm section is sans pareil once again, and Turner's swooning melodies bore a hole into your head and nestle comfortably. The sequencing is excellent also, the first half is top-loaded with indie-pop classics (If 'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala' doesn't hit the top spot this summer, I will chew off my own knuckles) followed by a three-piece Humbug-esque segue into yearning mid-tempo amalgams of the Smiths, the Stone Roses and the Cure at their poppiest. It takes a while to grow on you, but I can't see it shifting any time soon.

I love the new album tbh, Reckless Serenade is a brilliant song, but I do think the lyrics have gone a little down hill (Just my opinion) Even the little bro who is 8 said "When did the Arctic Monkeys start saying random words in songs" and its very hard to disagree with him.

I loved Humbug by the way thought it had much better lyrics and I the slower style is more my thing than the faster songs, that's not to say I don't like them.

Thought I'd hate it and almost avoided listening to it entirely, but gave it a listen and its great. Love it so far. Up there for an album of the year for me

So happy with the album! Different to their first two albums again, but still super. Seems to me the singles are the worst songs on it?

The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala is utterly wunderbar.

15 quid for the vinyl version isn't bad..I'm tempted....(I still wish it had a better ending, "That's where you're wrong" just doesn't cut it as a closing track IMO)

Fantastic album :), "library pictures" and "shes thunderstorms" are ringing in my head :)

I really like the new album. Its very different to Humbug (which I loved) but its not a regression either. Its definetly a new direction and it'll be very interesting to see how the new and old songs mesh live together. The monkeys were ruthless with their back catalogue for the Humbug tour so i'll be curious to see if they take even more old classics out for the newer albums. There are some cracking tunes here, think my 3 favs would have to be "The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala", "Dont sit down...." and "All my own Stunts". Really strong album though. Brick by brick as a feeder single is quiet different to the rest of the album and the lyrics are alot softer then whats been released previously. The only complaint is that I bought the Submarine soundtrack for "Piledriver Waltz" so I was a little disappointed to see it here! 8/10 for me though and it'll be hard pushed to beat for album of the year.

They played A Certain Romance tonight in the hometown stadium shows. Gutted not to have seen it. Doubt they'll play it at Oxegen, I can always hope though

It sounds more like The stone Roses or Echo and the bunnymen to me. Great closing track and one of the best things they've done.

i think its the best thing they've done, it really is. I just love how Most of the standout tracks just remind me of indie rock from the 80's like the smiths, new Order, the pixies, The smiths, the stone roses and Echo and Bunnymen. Its a record thats is set to be played to death during the summer and rightly deserved too.

    Its such a Summer record

Not the kind of music I would associate with summer but good nonetheless.

They're not doing Dublin or Belfast in their UK tour this year :/.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭Stompbox

Maybe that's because Dublin isn't in the UK? :P But seriously, I'd say they'll announce something, wouldn't mind a November date in the O2!

Prob announced after oxegen. I'd expect a couple of nights from a fri/sat/sun/mon in october or November.

They do sometimes announce the irish dates with the UK ones but i don't think they have announced all the suck it and see tour dates yet, so I say they will hopefully be coming to the 02 this year, and probably around november.

Its my second favorite Monkeys album at this stage, I absolutely love more or less every song on it, and can listen to it the whole way through. I agree with others in that the first half is the best, but the second is strong too.

I reckon this is gonna soundtrack my summer anyway, its a pretty upbeat record, perfect really.

i think the ending is just as good as the first six songs. The title track and Thats when you're wrong are two of the best tracks they ever done. But yeah i agree that the first six tracks are awesome:). Black treacle is a great one

Didn't really like it after the first or second listen (like Humbug) but now love it. Black Treacle is a brilliant track

Ah can't wait for Saturday night! Recent setlists from previous gigs seem really good. Looks like they'll be playing for about an hour and a half, how many songs do ye reckon they'll get through?

I have to say, they were bloody fantastic in Camden last night. Some of that had to do with the venue, pretty intimate from an AM's point of view, I ended up right at the front unintentionally, and some banging photos, the set was excellent I thought, all heavier stuff, which I was pretty delighted about, a good mix of things from all the albums, they started with Library Pictures which was a great one, and finished with Suck it and see, and Fluorescent Adolescent, I have to say it was a fantastic gig. Just over an hour and a half, Miles Kane, who was on before them, came on and performed with them as well.
It was absolutely brilliant, all the better for being so intimate, and so free :D:D They should *definitely* play the Roundhouse more often, a great venue anyway, but an unreal one to see Arctic Monkey's in I have to say. I will be buzzing off this for weeks methinks :D:D Stuff festivals and 50k capacity venues, that was absolutely immense
