That song is truly awful. I don't mind if a band wants to take their music in another direction, as long as its not the wrong one.

I await the rest of the album with bated breath

Josh Homme has ruined the Arctic Monkeys

Humbug was by far and away their best album - a psychedelic masterpiece.
Sounds like the they've gone for a bit more of a 60's hard rock sound on this one ala The Who or Cream.

Love the direction this band is going in - refusing to pander to a certain type of fan. They can't keep writing songs about being cheeky chaps, curry trays and not getting into nightclubs forever.

I love it, right proper rock n roll number. Remember its a teaser track not a first single. I love where they are going with this american sound.

I agree with this, but they can still make their music sound good, not that kind of sh1t they've produced, its such a nothing song

Well I guess my idea of good is very different to yours but isn't that what music is all about?

Not every song has to be overly meaningful - This song is part of an album. Also, sometimes having a mantra repeated in a song or poem as it is in "Brick by Brick" is effective in it's own way.

To say Josh Homme ruined the arctic monkeys is completely false in my opinion - even if you look at the lyrics on Humbug - they are more oblique and emotive and ultimately more satisfying for listeners who like to read between the lines rather than have everything concrete and have one meaning. If anything they've evolved into a more complex version of themselves.

Brick By Brick will probably be a B -side, no need to get worried lads, and as much as I don't like it, its alright :).

Arctic Monkeys announce their US tour the day after I book flights to Boston. I'll be seeing them at Oxegen and V Festival anyway but I feel its meant to be that they are playing Boston the day after I arrive, got to get tickets for that

Imo they peaked with the first album. Incredible raw energy and as far as I'm concerned not a bad song on it. That was the album that defined my generation as far as I'm concerned - you can relate to the lyrics in every almost song. Ritz to the Rubble being one of my favourite songs ever.

They are coming to Oxygen this year. Can I get a single day ticket to see them or do I have to buy the three day ticket?

Yep, you can get a day ticket, you'll have to wait a good while before they release info on what bands are playing what days, although the monkeys may chuck it up on their own web page

****??? i wonder what you think is great music. I think they are as good as ever maybe you don't like their new direction but calling them "****" is a bit far fetched. the track is good but its certainly isn't the best thing they done.

For the bandwagon jumpers and nme readers they did. I think Humbug was the best thing they done.

i dont think the new tune is that bad i think its a decent rock tune.

i like the new rock n roll direction alex and co are going in. it will lose them a lot of fans i think but these were ****ing sheep so they dont really count as fan imo.

I hate this, I'm a bandwagon jumper, along with this other guy because we feel the first album is their best. And I also feel that that album does define my generation better than any other I've heard, I don't see why thats jumping on the bandwagon though. I get that people like the third album and thats fair enough, but you have to appreciate that its quite a removal from the first two records, and therefore they will lose fans with it (they've not lost me as a fan but I have a good few friends who like to slag them off now having loved the first album)
My opinion of Humbug is this. It has some excellent tunes. Secret Door would easily get into my top 5 AM songs, Pretty Visitors would be close. And then Jewellers Hands would be right up there too. Songs like Cornerstone, Crying Lightning and to a lesser extent for me My Propeller and Dance Little Liar are ok, they stand out more as better tunes on this album than they would on either of the first two. But I feel that songs like Fire and The Thud, Dangerous Animals and Potion Approaching are some of their worst, then again this is just my opinion. Those latter 3 songs are a different style and will be liked by people with different tastes such as yourself. I have no problem with the band changing direction, I do realise they can't write about the same thing forever. But I feel I'd prefer them to go more towards the Secret Doors, 505's, Only Ones who knows along with pepperings of songs like Pretty Visitors. But I personally don't see that happening. I really do hope the next album is enjoyable for fans of both Humbug and WPSIATWIN, and I do actually think thats possible, but I don't think it will happen.

Read his post again, nowhere did he call them ****. He said the new song is. And i temd to agree with him.

I disagree about liking the song, it's a nothing melody with terrible lyrics. So bad that alot of 'the sheep' can see through it. But who knows maybe this new change will gain them a KOL like swell in numbers. Because we all know change is what makes a band so great, like say.... radiohead. ;)

Nah i think hte Arctic monkeys feet are firmly on the ground unlike KOL who you could tell wanted to be a massive band. We just have to wait until w hear the First single and album to se where they go.

suck it and see what an album title :D

The song titles are great too.

    "The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala"

"Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair"

Also, I see one of the songs from the Submarine soundtrack is on it, Piledriver Waltz. I imagine it'll be a different version.

Humbug is one of the best albums of the last 10 years, pity it will take a few years for people to view it that way...but they will eventually.

Wait I'm getting another vision, the future sounds exactly the same as it does now - it's full of bands just reproducing their first albums.

i actually am starting to love brick by brick

Just bought a ticket to see them in Boston :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 855 ✭✭✭joshrogan

I'm really intrigued as to what sort of direction they'll take with this new album, if piledriver waltz is the same version as on the Submarine EP then it'll be a really interesting album with a wide variety of music styles.
