Heard James Ford is producing this album too, just like Humbug. I would assume it will have a summer/autumn release.

Can't wait, they get better with each album - Humbug was a cracker

yeah liked humbug,it grew on me though.suppose it'll be similar to humbug if he's producing it?have to say I miss the sound they had from the first two albums.Would be good if they had a mix of the two different sounds on the album.

Ah but you see, James Ford also produced Favourite Worst Nightmare so it wasn't so much a case of Humbug's sound being a product of both the Monkeys and Ford but the Monkey's natural progression as songwriters.

I dunno how the new album will pan out. I think Humbug was very much the sound of a band casting off shackles, Arctic Monkeys MK II if you will, and identifying a sound that they are extremely comfortable with and expanding on it (ie. the latter half of FWN). Lyrically, I just can't see them returning to the black-and-white kitchen sink drama that informed their first two efforts in favour of the cryptic twisted aphorisms that Turner now seems so fond of.

I really think the Monkeys will go all out this time and try reinvent the wheel as I don't think Humbug quite generated the response that they would have liked. It's gonna be very interesting.:D

I tried to like Humbug and I gave it a good few listens but I just couldn't egt into it. Whereas the first two albums (especially the first one) had such an incredible ferocity in them I just found Humbug self-indulgent.

I wonder will Turner add some of his LAst Shadow puppets material? They did a cover of Baby I'm yours on 'Leave before the lights come on' and its amazing. 'Meeting Place' is one of the best songs he has written. The last album was very dark and its very exciting to hear what Alex can come up with next

ah didn't know that.suppose the sound will be whatever Arctic Monkeys want it to be.
So your saying something like 505 and Only Ones Who Know on FWN and expanding on that?whatver it is anyway i can't wait.
Can't wait for them at Oxegen aswell although I'd say they'll have dropped some of the songs from the first 2 albums.

Yeah, exactly right man. It seems that Humbug was a progression of songs like 'If You Were There, Beware' (Crying Lightning especially) and the general harder feel of tunes like 'This House Is A Circus'.

And as you said there about dropping tunes from the first two albums, that's why I think lyrically, Arctic Monkeys will never revert back to stuff like 'Teddy Picker' or 'Mardy Bum'. I kinda the sense that Turner is embarrassed about that lyrical material so his writing will only get more intricate and less immediate, I suppose.

Musically, they're just getting better and better though. If the 4th album is a record full of 'Potion Approaching'-s I'll be a happy man!

Have loved the Arctic's for years and they showed balls by going the opposite direction many bands take even though they knew they'd lose alot of the stragglers who just want to hear the "tunes". Must say though the only thing I didn't like about the Humbug era was how they messed around with alot of old songs live, .e.g. Fluorescent Adolescent which they even changed the key of in live performances and lost its power completely imo. If you look at videos from 2007 and compare it to 09, Alex seems a little less into it for some of the big songs. Probably board of playing some of them though.

Personally it hurts how they know every soul in the building wants to hear Mardy Bum but they still don't play it! In fairness it wasn't even that much of a mainstream song outside of the fans.

yea very much looking forward to it i wonder what they will try next. but what a year for music 2011 is going to be like all these bands have new albums out kasabian, beady eye, radiohead, qotsa, brother, elbow, the enemy to name but a few

Yeah would love them to still play Mardy Bum.Your right When The Sun Goes Down was alot more mainstream.

I love the fact that they won't play it comfortable like The Kings of Leon have, i always got the feeling the whole people's band thing didn't suit them and they rather be a band who are respected more then a big seller. I do think their New album needs to a near classic or classic album for me to really be a band for the times.

Genuinely the best band I've heard in years, Turner is miles ahead of the rest. Can't wait to hear what they come up with next.

In the main I agree the lyrics have moved on to a more introverted place, but remember they still had Cornerstone on Humbug which was classic Turner in the storytelling mode of lyric writing and one of the best songs they've written IMO.

I wasn't a big fan of Humbug at all, much preferred their first two albums

I think one of the main reasons I love them so much is the lyrics from the first record in particular. They had such a fantastic way of saying things very simply whilst sounding very poetic and intelligent at the same time. The last album didn't have that. Like the above poster said, Cornerstone was classic Turner, but really its the only song that is. If they don't want to write about failing to get into nightclubs anymore then thats fine, because stuff like that isn't what bothers them anymore. But I really don't like the way they've gone which for me is basically being overcomplicated and losing that touch of simplicity that made the songs so accessible lyrically.

In a musical sense I found some of the Humbug tunes a bit boring. I know there was a previous poster who said Potion Approaching was a good song but for me, that song along with Dangerous Animals and Fire and The Thud are among their worst songs. That said, I remember saying to a mate after the album came out that although I felt it was their worst album, if they learn the right lessons from it, their next one could be their best record. This is because for me, songs like Secret Door, Pretty Visitors and Jewellers Hands are excellent (I think I'd have SD in my top 5 Monkeys tunes). So hopefully they go more in that direction then Potion Approaching style. Ford as far as I know produced only 3 of the songs off Humbug and I think they were Secret Door, My Propeller and one other which I'm not sure of (maybe Dance Little Liar). That for me is a positive sign,

As for the live show, I think they kind of caved to pressure towards the end of the arena tour by chucking half of Mardy Bum into Fluorescent Adolescent. It made for a pretty great 6 or 7 minutes. I don't have a problem with bands wanting to play their new material because I appreciate that they can get bored playing songs over and over again, but really songs like Mardy Bum, From Ritz to Rubble and A Certain Romance should always be in their setlist, and I think most fans would agree with me. I tend to side more with the people that say the fan has paid his 50 or so quid and should get the best value for his/her money. I do get as I said that playing the same songs repeatedly gets very boring and a bored band can lead to a boring show, but they should mix it up a little bit, chuck in those type of songs every now and then and make it a more special occasion all round.
Not that it stops me going either way, I'll have seen them 5 times by the end of this year :p

i saw them live at oxegen in 2006 and live in 2009 it was like watching 2 different bands, in 2006 they were full of energy and enthusiasm, in 2009 they seemed bored and disinteresd hopefully the new album will inject a bit of life into them.

they have been my favourite band for many years now, respect to them for doing what they want to do, but i would like if they brought back some of their old songs to their setlists like a certain romance or from the ritz to the rubble, humbug mixed with the old arctic monkeys would be very good, i agree with missing the way alex's lyrics would be about simple things but phrased in such a poetic and witty way. I hope he dosen't lose his english accent living in America.

Completely agree. I think Humbug is a good album, and although I yearn for another Favourite Worst Nightmare, I respect their decision to move in a different direction. They'd never last playing the same subject matter album after album. Anyways you appreciate it more that way imho.

I'm going to Oxegen this year (only because the Monkeys are there :D) and I hope there's a fair share of their old songs.

Alex, play Mardy Bum please <3

    I wanna steal your soul
    I wanna rock n roll
    a mole
    livin in a hole

More of these clever and insightful Turner lyrics?

Truly truly terrible song, lyrically abysmal and musically just as pedestrian.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭shamtastic

Hmmm still don't really enjoy that track after a few listens to be honest. The lyrics are almost too simple to be from Turner...I hope he hasn't lost his witticism. That "I wanna rock and roll" bit is cringe. If it sets the tone for the album it's fair to say it's not a huge musical progression from Humbug to the extent of a change on previous album releases. Prominent support vocals from Nick and Homme inspired guitar from Jamie...I think they've settled on this style for now.

I'm a big Monkeys fan but that is a very poor song. I hope it isn't setting the tone for the album. Its completely incohesive as a song, it slows down, speeds up, lyrics smattered here and there. Completely different from everything theyve done and it's a bad sign.

It reminds me of one of the weaker B Sides you'd hear for them

    You're wrong.

The newer sound is alot sexier.

It would be terribly sad if they kept pumping out songs with their old sound while they clearly want to make more music like this. It was the same with qotsa and the ltp album. Change isnt bad, its good, as long as its the direction the band want to go.
