Arctic Monkeys.

Heard James Ford is producing this album too, just like Humbug. I would assume it will have a summer/autumn release.

Can't wait, they get better with each album - Humbug was a cracker

Ah but you see, James Ford also produced Favourite Worst Nightmare so it wasn't so much a case of Humbug's sound being a product of both the Monkeys and Ford but the Monkey's natural progression as songwriters.

I dunno how the new album will pan out. I think Humbug was very much the sound of a band casting off shackles, Arctic Monkeys MK II if you will, and identifying a sound that they are extremely comfortable with and expanding on it (ie. the latter half of FWN). Lyrically, I just can't see them returning to the black-and-white kitchen sink drama that informed their first two efforts in favour of the cryptic twisted aphorisms that Turner now seems so fond of.

I really think the Monkeys will go all out this time and try reinvent the wheel as I don't think Humbug quite generated the response that they would have liked. It's gonna be very interesting.:D

I wonder will Turner add some of his LAst Shadow puppets material? They did a cover of Baby I'm yours on 'Leave before the lights come on' and its amazing. 'Meeting Place' is one of the best songs he has written. The last album was very dark and its very exciting to hear what Alex can come up with next

Yeah, exactly right man. It seems that Humbug was a progression of songs like 'If You Were There, Beware' (Crying Lightning especially) and the general harder feel of tunes like 'This House Is A Circus'.

And as you said there about dropping tunes from the first two albums, that's why I think lyrically, Arctic Monkeys will never revert back to stuff like 'Teddy Picker' or 'Mardy Bum'. I kinda the sense that Turner is embarrassed about that lyrical material so his writing will only get more intricate and less immediate, I suppose.

Musically, they're just getting better and better though. If the 4th album is a record full of 'Potion Approaching'-s I'll be a happy man!

played their first album last night. 1st time in years i've listened to it...great album

I wasn't a big fan of Humbug at all, much preferred their first two albums

I think one of the main reasons I love them so much is the lyrics from the first record in particular. They had such a fantastic way of saying things very simply whilst sounding very poetic and intelligent at the same time. The last album didn't have that. Like the above poster said, Cornerstone was classic Turner, but really its the only song that is. If they don't want to write about failing to get into nightclubs anymore then thats fine, because stuff like that isn't what bothers them anymore. But I really don't like the way they've gone which for me is basically being overcomplicated and losing that touch of simplicity that made the songs so accessible lyrically.

In a musical sense I found some of the Humbug tunes a bit boring. I know there was a previous poster who said Potion Approaching was a good song but for me, that song along with Dangerous Animals and Fire and The Thud are among their worst songs. That said, I remember saying to a mate after the album came out that although I felt it was their worst album, if they learn the right lessons from it, their next one could be their best record. This is because for me, songs like Secret Door, Pretty Visitors and Jewellers Hands are excellent (I think I'd have SD in my top 5 Monkeys tunes). So hopefully they go more in that direction then Potion Approaching style. Ford as far as I know produced only 3 of the songs off Humbug and I think they were Secret Door, My Propeller and one other which I'm not sure of (maybe Dance Little Liar). That for me is a positive sign,

As for the live show, I think they kind of caved to pressure towards the end of the arena tour by chucking half of Mardy Bum into Fluorescent Adolescent. It made for a pretty great 6 or 7 minutes. I don't have a problem with bands wanting to play their new material because I appreciate that they can get bored playing songs over and over again, but really songs like Mardy Bum, From Ritz to Rubble and A Certain Romance should always be in their setlist, and I think most fans would agree with me. I tend to side more with the people that say the fan has paid his 50 or so quid and should get the best value for his/her money. I do get as I said that playing the same songs repeatedly gets very boring and a bored band can lead to a boring show, but they should mix it up a little bit, chuck in those type of songs every now and then and make it a more special occasion all round.
Not that it stops me going either way, I'll have seen them 5 times by the end of this year

Heard this earlier, its really poor

Hmmm still don't really enjoy that track after a few listens to be honest. The lyrics are almost too simple to be from Turner...I hope he hasn't lost his witticism. That "I wanna rock and roll" bit is cringe. If it sets the tone for the album it's fair to say it's not a huge musical progression from Humbug to the extent of a change on previous album releases. Prominent support vocals from Nick and Homme inspired guitar from Jamie...I think they've settled on this style for now.

It reminds me of one of the weaker B Sides you'd hear for them
