I've been pondering this and it seems the Z-Box trumps the revo on graphics card (Ion2) and Wireless-n, while the Shuttle trumps that by having the silent cooling system.

Where did you buy the Shuttle LoveGreen? It's £217.18 on ebuyer

Also, how much is delivery to Ireland on ebuyer? And are there any other decent sites I should be checking?

    Cheers

You made my heart jump there seeing €180 haha but that's the model without the Ion graphics card, basically 256MB shared memory versus 512MB dedicated.

The XS35GT is on that site too at €243 which is a good price but seems Jaguar is just for trade?? And anyway when adding to the card the sub-total states €294 so that price was before VAT...

I got the R3610 with 2gb RAM and a wired keyboard & mouse from ebuyer and have win7 ultimate on it. as long as you ramp up the gfx memory in the bios and have all the correct drivers to make the most of the ion gfx it has no problem playing back HD video in win7 and works fine for xbmc, boxee, hulu, flash, youtube etc.

my Rii mini wireless keyboard & trackpad is working fine too, aside from not having an F11 key (it stops at F8) so full screen browsing can be a bit of a problem when i need it from time to time although chrome can do it via the menus anyway.

aside from that i'm happy. could do with more RAM tho so i don't have to close all my apps when i want to watch some HD video's, but it's a minor quibble considering.

Those Riis look interesting. You could probably use something like AutoHotKey to remap f11 to something else if you were bothered.

I had a look on eBay. Is $55 roughly the correct rate for them or are they available anywhere else cheaper?

I find the Rii excellent got mine for $41 and bid with this buyer on an auction.

For example 3.5 hrs left on this auction

the only downside i have is that although it's technically an RF remote, if i don't have line line of sight to the receiver, i get a very intermittent signal even though i'm only about 5 feet away. i.e. if i hold it downward in my lap and my sofa cushions block the signal when i'm typing or using the trackpad i get maybe 50% or what i'm doing registering. oddly enough it seems to affect some keys more than others.

How did you get the iPlayer to work with a proxy service in xbmc if that's what you did ?

Just came across this thread again. I bought the Revo 3600 (single core atom) in the hope of running a media centre on it. After weeks of messing around I gave up on ever getting iPlayer or Hulu working properly on it in either Boxee or XBMC. I tried again recently and Boxee was still not usable - in fact I think the way boxee does Hulu/iPlayer means it will never be able to run properly on a low power box (which is the real reason I reckon they changed the boxee box from tegra to that intel yoke). To my surprise tho, the latest Darma beta of XMBC has unoffical iplayer and hulu plugins that play flawlessly on the revo. So it looks like it will finally make its way downstairs :D

In summary, if you had given up on the 3600, try it with latest XBMC beta. If you have a choice of getting a better CPU, do it, opens up the option of using Boxee.

Do those players work behind an Irish IP?

    Thanks.

Use a TOR server- or IP ghosting, its what most of us do?

surely TOR is too slow for iPlayer (I haven't tried it but my experience of TOR is it's dog-slow)

Check with proxy.org and choose the TOR with most relays- the more relays the faster the speed. It can be dog slow- but it can also be quite acceptable. Time the connection to when you're likely to get most relays- can also help.

Tor is a service run by volunteers to allow for anonymity online for people who need it. It isn't designed for people trying to get around geo blocking of media content :( (www.torproject.org)

Please, please give Tor a break and pay for a proxy service. I use www.overplay.net, $10 a month for US, UK and Irish proxies (among others). Using that I get glitchless access to iPlayer, Hulu and (when abroad) RTE Player.

You set the proxy up before you go into XBMC, then all internet access XBMC tries will flow through the proxy. I have previously played around with tunneling specific ip ranges thru to different proxies, so the Hulu requests would go to a US proxy and the iPlayer proxy would go to iPlayer. I actually got it working (to my astonishment :D ). Someday I might try and write an add-in for XBMC that would put a front end to the config needed to do this.

TOR works fine for iplayer and most US TV sites if you use the vidalia bundle with the mgeni browser and requires almost zero configuration. browsing is a little sluggish a lot of the time, but streaming works fine for me if i give it about 30 seconds or so to buffer first before i start playback.

as for it not being meant for that kind of usage, vidalia allows you to set it up with one or two clicks so you contribute to the TOR network yourself and act as a server/relay for other users so i don't see the problem, particularly as the mgeni browser is designed specifically for viewing online media like iplayer.

it's free, it works and it gives you the opportunity to contribute to the tor network so i don't see any problems using it.

This is really a political discussion, but there is definitely a problem using it. In terms of bandwidth, imagine how many uncensored emails a Chinese dissident might be able to send or receive for one streamed episode of Glee? Tor is a political movement to try and ensure the continued availability of anonymity on the net. Given the async nature of most broadband and the rather large legal implications of becoming a tor node yourself, I'm not sure that the availability of that option really negates the damage done to the network by misusing it for geo blocked entertainment streams.

This is a good paper done by the Tor people on how why their network is so slow ...

    http://www.defcon.org/images/defcon-17/dc-17-presentations/defcon-17-roger_dingledine-tor.pdf

One of the key reasons is the small percentage of users who put high loads through it. They discuss various blocking/throttling mechanisms and finally reckon that user education is one of the key things:
We still run across users who think any anonymity system out there must have been designed with file- sharing in mind. If we make it clearer in the FAQ and our webpage that Tor isn’t for high-volume streams, that might combine well with the other approaches above.
Overall, the challenge of users who want to overload the system will continue.

So basically, users who use it to stream are contributing to the death of tor, its as simple as that. Unless of course they really do turn on the node stuff and have at least a synchronous BB connection... :)

all well and good until you go to the http://www.torproject.org/vidalia/ site and download the vidalia bundle which specifically includes mgeni which is specifically designed to access geographically restricted content and specifically mentions the BBC iplayer on its own download page.

if they want to educate people into not watching streaming media using the tor network then i'm pretty sure their first step should be to not bundle preconfigured software with it that is specifically designed to do exactly that.

It really would be eye rollingly peculiar if that was the case :) And I'm not saying it is not, but I can't see any bundle available for download on the torproject.org site that includes mgeni. They all seem to be based around firefox (with pidgin for the IM bundles). Where are the mgeni bundles?

On mgeni's own site (http://code.google.com/p/mgeni/wiki/Source), they have a very clear disclaimer...
Mgeni is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Tor® project. This product is produced independently from the Tor® anonymity software and carries no guarantee from The Tor Project about quality, suitability or anything else.

As far as I can see, mgeni is a completely separate project and is really just a torified version of the Arora open source browser.

    crap, you're right. :o

i installed it from a link on this thread, but i was certain that I'd only installed the vidalia bundle on it's own and not mgeni as well, but it looks like i was mistooken, sorry. :(

there's a new higher spec black(ish) Revo coming out. :)

    http://www.ebuyer.com/search?sq=r3700&q=acer%2Baspire%2Brevo%2B3700&sort=relevancy&limit=10&page=1&subsearch=Go

not sure if it would be worth an upgrade, but it's got a bit more juice under the hood than the old one if you were looking to buy one.

Was thinking of getting this one, the R3700 to replace my aging laptop.

What the wifi signal strength like?

I only have a linksys 54G router and have seen videos on youtube about the weak signal strength. This would be my only worry

If you're going to stick with VLC you'll find various options under the Video tab to improve video quality (Tools > Preferences > Video). Try changing the output module to maybe Direct X, the default one usually looks weoful under Windows.

I would not use VLC personally, that doesnt have any support for GPU acceleration. The whole point imo of the Acer Revo is to use the Nvidia card for video acceleration (DXVA under Windows) so you can play high-def x264 content. Ditch your AVI files and download MKV with x264 in future.

Try Media Player Classic Home Cinema. It's included in the K-Lite Codec Pack (Link). You can enable DXVA by going to Options > Internal Filters. (tick H264/AVC DXVA).

O men, YOU save my some money with your info....THANK YOU !!

if it's the linksys WRT54G (the black & blue one with two antenna), the regular linksys firmware is pretty brutal, but it has a huge 3rd party firmware community and you could put something like tomato or ddwrt on it and turn it into one of the best routers on the planet without needing to spend a single penny on it.

I've got the one that can't get tomato/ddwrt unfortunately, but it is the best router I ever had. I bought a dlink DIR615 awhile back and put ddwrt on it. I got rid of it because I was getting a lot of dropped connections and bad signals. My ipod touch also kept losing connection. So I went back to my old reliable :)

I guess I will have to take the chance as I can't get an answer about the wifi signal but as I'm close to the router hopefully it should be ok
