Someone should really rename this thread to Acer Revo HTPC 3610 and move it to the HTPC forum :-)

i'm actually finding that 720p x264 files play better in wmp 12 than anything else so far, but i don't know if i've tried them in media player classic even though i have the k-lite codec pack installed with it.

i'm finding them unplayable in xbmc under windows and still didn't get round to installing xbmc live on it rather than running it in windows or linux thanks to the pita that is trying to get it to install from a flash disk and having a lack of an external dvd drive. :(

i know there's a way, i just need to have the time and patience to find it and do it.

I have a PS3 connected to the same TV and it upscales SD avi files to HD but I have never been able to get the Acer to upscale like it - I have tried FFDshow but it still looks like normal SD.

The PS3 uses emulation when upscaling- it is not upscaling in the true sense- its almost a rerendering of the video stream. A Revo- simply doesn't have the horsepower to this (never mind the software)......

Thats not true. I think you are mixing up the upscaling of old games with video.

Upscaling seems to be a very misunderstood term. The PS3 does nothing to a standard-def video that a basic computer can't do.

Is it possible to somehow get a remote control for these? I'd rather a wireless controller of some sort over a wireless keyboard/mouse combo for use as a media centre.
Anything that uses usb. It's just a pc after-all.

    I recommend the Rii.
    Fantastic little mouse/keyboard.
It's around 40 euro on dealextreme, worth it.

No. It simply stretches the video, like voodu said.
This is why upscaling is either pointless, or bad.

saw an article about them just after their launch on engadget that seemed to think they were pretty good and i figured it would be perfect for the revo behind my tv, but i couldn't find them anywhere at the time and then forgot about them until you reminded me last night and i had a look and found some on ebay.

you quite often still get a good deal on ebay if you find an auction that's ending mid afternoon on a saturday when most people are offline (as opposed to weekdays when all the bored senseless office drones are sitting there online all day bored :))

just got one for €33 inc. free delivery so thanks for the reminder. :)

the short answer is yes - if all You want it for is browsing and word processing i would buy the linux one - install ubuntu and open office (both free ) You wont be disappointed.

if you're used to office 2000 then you won't be disappointed with open office, but if you are used to office 2007 then you'll cry. it's fine if you don't plan on doing anything too fancy though.

    On their website tonight,

Sorry, this product is currently unavailable. It is likely that it has been discontinued and no longer for sale.

    Emmmmmm!

It hasn't been manufactured in almost 8 months- so any stocks were clearance making way for the dual core unit (now also recently discontinued) and the Ion2 chipset (now in production).

highly recommended too for a few quid extra. mine is happily playing 720p video in Win7.

didn't actually install XBMC live yet because I kind of got used to having win7 on the main telly. :)

also, bad news that my Rii remote getting caught by the revenue. :(

just got a letter this morning from them that I have to pay €13 (VAT, Duty & €6 handling fee) to them on top of the €33 i paid the seller.

the real kicker is that it was with 'FREE' delivery, with the actual delivery costs taken out of the €33 I paid to the seller, so i've ended up (partly) paying VAT & import duty on a hidden delivery charge.

if anyone else gets one from outside the EU, make sure you ask for the final payment to include P&P of enough to bring the actual cost to €22 + P&P so it's not eligible.

could have been worse I suppose, at least it was just a little thing and wasn't something that cost me hundreds of euro.

Oh, that won't do, as I was hoping to buy one in a month or two.

I suppose the newer version with ION2 will be more expensive :/

still £200 plus delivery from ebuyer, but worth every penny imho.

got mine with 160gb hdd and 2gb ram and it flies with win7 on it and with games that make the most of the iON chip, it's actually okay as a budget gaming rig too. :)

Youtube and Flash work fine on most PCs (apart from a brand I'm not going to mention because they'll start arguing).

I've one of those Acers as my Media Centre at home. I'm using Ubuntu on it and it has no problems with YouTube. It boots in about 40 seconds to XBMC but then a quick keypress brings me to the web. YouTube full screen is fine.

I'm using Linux because I found that the HD playback in the Windows version of XBMC was a bit laggy for me. In Media Centre it was fine but I don't like that app.

For anybody using one of these get a webcam with a good mic and set up Skype. It is great sitting on the couch using the TV for Skype or normal phone calls.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate on it here- and its fine with both Youtube and Flash. Any issues would tend to be software related (such as the current probs with Java 1.6 library files etc).

smccarrick, which exact revo model do you have mate?

Just wondering should I get the R3600 or the Dual core R3610 if I just want to use is as a media player under my pc.

R3600 with 4Gb of RAM- 1Gb dedicated to graphics, and the 500Gb SATA HDD.
I got it on ebay from Taiwan- complete with a wireless keyboard and mouse with dual English/Chinese characters :)

Don't think its a standard spec.

I'm finally getting myself one of these to go with the new HDTV and I see the R3610 is £200 on ebuyer.

However I just came across this Zotac Z-Box which is a bare-bones mini PC which doesn't come with a hard drive or RAM. I figure I'll throw my hard drive from my old busted laptop into it and maybe buy 1GB RAM on the cheap ~£12 on Amazon. (The busted laptop has two 512 MB cards but the Z-Box only has 1 slot)

It has the Atom D510 1.66GHz dual core processor and Ion GT218 graphics card with 512MB dedicated memory. And it has HDMI, DVI, S/PDIF, Wireless n, Gigabit ethernet, 6 USBs, 6-in-1 card reader which all sounds top notch!

What would the more experienced/knowledgeable of you think about this as a HTPC running Ubuntu/Boxee? Would it be better than the Revo? I suppose it's newer...
also it's £190 on Amazon with free delivery, whereas the Revo is £200 plus delivery

I found an in-depth review of it here, singing its praises!

I was in your situation about a week ago and went for a Shuttle XS35GT (http://www.shuttle.eu/products/ultra-small/xs35gt/). It cost me £205stg £16delivery. You can get it cheaper without the ION graphics card. I have it set up with a 500gb whisper quiet hdd and 2gb ram. I ordered windows 7 so I am just waiting on that to come to test it out (although since there is no cd drive i need to install it from a flash drive).
My mate has an acer and it really is a great machine. He got one with really nice specs which all seemed to be sold out when I was looking. It would definitely work out much cheaper than a Zotac/Shuttle since you dont need to buy ram/hdd (he got win7 and a wireless mouse+keyboard so remote not really required).

Just came across this thread again. I bought the Revo 3600 (single core atom) in the hope of running a media centre on it. After weeks of messing around I gave up on ever getting iPlayer or Hulu working properly on it in either Boxee or XBMC. I tried again recently and Boxee was still not usable - in fact I think the way boxee does Hulu/iPlayer means it will never be able to run properly on a low power box (which is the real reason I reckon they changed the boxee box from tegra to that intel yoke). To my surprise tho, the latest Darma beta of XMBC has unoffical iplayer and hulu plugins that play flawlessly on the revo. So it looks like it will finally make its way downstairs :D

In summary, if you had given up on the 3600, try it with latest XBMC beta. If you have a choice of getting a better CPU, do it, opens up the option of using Boxee.
