    Thanks vibe666,

Doesn't have to be the r3600 if r3700 is better?

Budget is about €250, thinking of possibly building a basic htpc myself also

    cheers

there's nothing wrong with the r3700, if you can find it cheap enough.

there's a good review of it here: http://www.mediaplayerworld.com/index.php?topic=3532.0

it also mentions xbmc as well.

Looks decent to me, if there's no special offers anywhere.

Might be worth seeing if you could get it cheaper delivered from ebuyer to a friends in the north or UK and either collect it from there or get it delivered.

I thought this thread was about the Acer Revo bargain, not XBMC help desk.

    This thread needs to close....

    Well, you thought wrong....
This is one of the best threads EVER

This might be more up to date.. it looks nice, Engadget reported a 'special' price during April, not sure if this is it though..

So now that I've finally decided to get one of these bad boys (to run XBMC live) I see eBuyer have stopped delivery to Ireland. Bah.

Where's the next best/cheapest place to pick one up?

    cheers

Have they? Still listed on their site?

sorry if this is a stupid question, i see these have a PCI slot for expansion. Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a satellite card (ie. the blackgold bgt3595) to one of these?

it's a mini-pci slot and it's already taken up with the wireless card.

afaik, the only way to get a satellite feed directly into the revo would be with a usb based card.

that's a shame, would have made it a near perfect all round system. oh well, thanks for the info.

that doesn't mean you can't do it, it just means you'll have your dongle hanging out. :pac:

From the little bit of reading i've done on USB sat tuners (from watty on another thread), it seems the only option is an externally powered tuner, as USB only delivers 5 volts, whereas satellite needs 13 and 18 volts for correct operation. Don't fancy using anything that requires external power, really looking for an all in one. I'll probably end up building one, which is ok by me :)

just as an FYI for anyone still looking to get a Revo, assuming you can get around the Irish delivery issues just recently ebuyer have the 2gb/250gb R3700 for £185 at the moment which is a pretty good deal imho.

    this any good....

.....and is xbmc still what people would recommend?

Its ideal for XBMC, hard to beat at that price point. I see there is one with 2GB ram and wired keyboard for £178 on ebuyer also. If you are going to be using a remote with XBMC then the wired or not keyboard isnt worth the extra. 2GB of ram should be plenty for Linux based XBMC

Didn't they stop selling stuff to Ireland at some stage? I thought there was a problem with the electrical recycling or taxes or something like that...

I don't think it's "better" (the ATV might not support 1080p) but it will run XBMC for you after jailbreaking it. Lots of people on the XBMC forums using them. Might be your only option too as I don't think eBuyer ship here anymore.

You could try http://www.deliverme.ie/ and the free shipping option on the ebuyer site to keep costs down as one option I guess.

I have an ATV2 jailbroken with XBMC and while it is OK for most DVD stuff, with many mkv's or high action scenes on DVD format it freezes up. Forget killasampla , its not happening. The ATV just isn't up to it.
Secondly the ATV 2 needs to be rebooted every once in a while to clear out cache or it starts locking up, which is a bit of a pain if you have to use a tethered boot.
That said I got an ATV2 for my Dad and he loves it for the internet streaming etc which is what he wanted. My wife likes our one for streaming Chinese TV shows.

But for the main living room one, I would go with a nettop and the RL70 is a pretty good choice at that price point. Dunno if it would do killasampla though, anyone?, i'd be tempted myself if it does :D
