Bear in mind this is my first time on this board but when you say the alt universe or purgatory you mean after the nuke yeah? Locke talking to walt and hurley was before this wasnt it? Or am i way off?

Yeah sorry, when I say alt universe I just mean the flash sideways that we've been seeing throughout Season 6. I know Locke met up with Walt but I think in reality, Walt was still a young lad. The truth is that as he got older what happened on the island would have become of less and less significance. He in all likeliness lived most of his life without ever meeting anyone he knew from the island. So in this sense it's understandable that Walt wasn't there at the end with them in the church; his journey was seperate.

That would of actually been a class ending. Jack the new smoke monster. Final scene....Hurley and Jack sitting on the beach looking out with Jack saying to Hurley "You have no idea how much I want to kill you".

    And everything starts again.

Ha, with Hurley uttering "Dude...not cool." ;)
Just read the thread. Wow some of you went ape sh*t!

Worse than aids, cancer and anal rape apparently...

    - Vincent was amazing
    - Lapidus did his usual action movie schtick :)
    - Hooray for Juliet/Sawyer, Jin/Sun, Charlie/Claire, Jack/Kate, in that order.

So after reading through what ye all have said, the living on the island thing definately happened. The flash sideways - I thought happened because of the bomb going off in the 70s. Am I right in assuming that they are dead at the end? Is it set in the present or is that itself a flash forward? Is it meant to be interpreted as I see fit? I knew I wouldn't understand the ending I just knew it.
Those who say it was a 'waste of 6 years'... seriously? It was on for 50 mins a week when it was in season. Hardly timeconsuming. Although with websites like this, tvtropes and Lostpedia... endless internet tabs were used and abused :( RIP

Gah I'm so tired. Kudos to Sky1 though.

I don't think purgatory is the right thing to be calling the 'flash sideways' think of it more as a dream, a possibility, something to do while you're waiting- the time between them dying and meeting in the church. I think Desmond just knew where it was at, something to do with his connection to the island or with the other people, he acted as more of a catalyst than a guide I think.

As i predicted they left themselves with way too much to do and in the end they settled for a hollywood ending.
Feel a bit cheated to be honest given that some of the episodes have been very good in the series.
But not the way to end Lost after six years.

It's obvious they created something they could never contain and never had any idea of where they were going. So many riddles and mysteries unexplained. And it's way too insulting to suggest people who have watched the show from the beginning are just nit picking and being pedantic.

That is why I'll be pissed off looking back over Lost

However it was a pretty decent episode as after watching all of season 6 I came to the finale realising they were focused on characters stories rather than the mysteries, so I was very teary eyed(it could have been the early morning start) to see so many Losties reunited. Yes there were inconsistencies with some not being there(no Michael/Walt but yet Rose/Bernard) but overall we got an ending that I think was best we could have hoped for given how impossible the writers had made it for themselves.

    Lost, Aloha.

I think Christian explained the concept of the purgatory zone in the chapel with Jack. The is no "time" there - they all died at different times in "Island" world but have met up there whenever they are each ready to move on.

Not too surprising I guess. But in what form? Deleted scenes or just like interviews with the writers?

Didn't notice Kate having to bypass and underwear when Claire was giving birth, which means Claire didn't wear any.....

    .......nice.

Exactly- great to see most people are on board with what happened and there are so many different ideas, but I think this is pretty close to it !

The flash sideways reminds me of Flint sitting under the tree waiting for Tas for anyone who read dragonlance :P

    Re: the island.

Alright, they never outright explained what it was, but I don't think they ever could. What could it be that would be a satisfactory answer? Thank **** it wasn't heaven, puragatory or hell in any case! Perhaps no-one knew what the island was, they just knew that whatever the hell it was it was special and needed protecting. Maybe Jacob didn't even know - he was as confused as anyone when he was given the job of protecting it. Everyone - both in the show and IRL - wanted to desperately know what the island was, but no-one was certain. The vague, ambiguous hints were enough - it had extremely unique properties, some sort of healing abilities (I was waiting for a fountain of youth reveal over the last few weeks :pac:) and all others of bizarre, magical properties. Everyone from the Others to Widmore to Flocke wanted to know what it was, but it always remained just out of reach.

What was more important as a show though was the characters. How people reacted to and dealt with the difficulties posed by such an unusual place was what Lost was about. The island wasn't the focus of the finale - I'm sure many will complain about the perceived giant plug hole cop out -the people were. They were the core of Lost, and the mystery was what made it so compelling to follow. The reactions to everything that was going on led to six seasons of interesting character development, with many always frustrated at the lack of answers. Jack's final acceptance of things without really understanding them is similar to the way the writers approached the series at the end of the show - there are things we'll never quite understand, so we'll just go with what seems right. And I think it totally benefited the show on the whole.

Haven't a clue, could be commentaries, interviews or other scenes - we'll just have to wait!

This is a bit of a laugh anyways... :D

For about a 2 minute period I had forgotten about the coffin going to the church at the start of the episode and I actually thought they were all going there to see Jack and Kate get married and help him remember.

Thank fcuk that didn't happen :D

    Brilliant.

If I watched it any other time rather than 5 am when my gf and the neighbours were in bed, I would have blubbered my way through the episode. Cried at least 7 or 8 times.

Brilliant ending. The all came together in this place before moving on. They all died at different points in the past and in the future. In the case of Hurley and Ben, in the way distant future. When Hurley told Ben outside the church "you made a great number 2" and ben replied "you made a great number 1", it was clear that they had lived out their lives protecting the island for many many years in the way Jacob and Richard had.

Yes, there are questions remaining, but if every question had been answered this morning, I don't think I'd have liked it as much.

Thank you Lost for 6 years of love/hate. Like a good marriage :)

Just occurred to me but this was very like the end of Lord of the Rings when you think about it.

    WTF was the island?!?!?!?!?
It was a hunk of rock in the ocean, that just happened to be home to some incredibly powerful inexplicable force, that was there through the whole 6 series, but we've only come recently to refer to as the "pool of light".

    +1

I really doubt that the writers ever planned to answer ever possible mythological question that came about in the show. They set out to tell the story of a group of people who crashed on an island, who's story arc played a part in a much larger history of an island. I'm sure they could have come up with a back story for a moving, time travelling island but it was just the setting for, to paraphrase Christian, "the most important parts of these individuals lives".

You can put this up as being disingenuous by the writers but it is science fiction. Shows such as the Wire are easier to write as the audience doesnt need to be shown the background to Baltimore, they take it at face value. To be honest right up until the scene with Jack & Christian I was still hoping that all the answers would come but in that & the final scene I "let go" and realised that it was the characters that I'd grown to love more than the answers.

Just finished now (started at 6:30 and skipped all ads... gotta love Sky+)

As a finale, it was 10/10. Everything that needed to be said has been said.
As someone who has followed this since the start, I thought it was a brilliant ending.

Richard Dower, stop trolling. The Hills should be starting on MTV soon.

can someone clear up something for me about the ending, when the light came through the church and they left the island (dead or alive), was it meant to be that their two worlds came together and they moved onto a new life together? Still slightly confused but i think its because I got so little sleep

It was a beautifully constructed finale and it was genuinely moving and I nearly came to tears at a number of stages through out.

It was great to see Jake got his purpose, also was great to see Hugo become the new Jacob and Ben his number 2, which was incredible moving as it was all he ever wanted and sad as well when you consider the sacrifice he made by not saving Alex his daughter.

All in all I really enjoyed it and I'm going to miss it, so now on with life so no more college or Lost, this is going to be interesting :D

Presumably, they all went to a shared "afterlife", shared due to their time together on the island. Some had already left the island (Claire, Kate, Sawyer etc.) some hadn't (Jack, Hurley, Ben etc.), but they all met up in purgatory and those who were ready to "leave" went on to an afterlife.

Everybody in the church were dead and the place was constructed in order for everybody to met up for one last time before moving on into the "afterlife"
