lorry in the ditch on the sharp bend before the dummy's bridge (should be moved by now various tractors pulling it out)
donegalman1 - whats the green party got to do with it ?
its your local councillors that set the budgets and "manage" all of this its those people you need to complain to - but lets be fair we dont have the equipment for 3 weeks of weather like this (i know i dont, if it happened every year i'd have winter tyres in the shed and snow chains in the car, if i bought snow tyres now theyd be perished by the next time this happens)

you can keep tyres for a long time just keep them cool, dry and especially in the dark, UV destroys rubber, some tyres you buy new be laying in tyre centers for years , if you look on the side of tyres you will see the date they were made it goes be the week/year so it will be a number like 4908

Yeah... new snow.. different look about the place this morning. This is the first morning I haven't been able to see the sun come up. Foggy / misty grey cold morning. Forecast is for 'possibly' more snow around noon today.

Ah our estate is hazardous atm. I didn't attempt to take workvan down the mild hill to my house this evening, as there wouldn't be a hope in hell of it getting back out in the morning! It's safe to say that rear wheel drive Transit's are useless in these conditions!

Went up to a guys house near Knock crossroads, Ballybofey and the car started moving a lot on the road. There were 2 narrow strips (ruts) on my side of the road as I was driving up and these were just the right width for car wheels but there was still frozen ice/slush in the middle of the tracks and to the side also. Very difficult to see them in the dark now as they have turned colour.

I was meeting another car and obviously held a little more to the left hand side but this then put all 4 wheels on the ice and she was slipping and sliding out and in of the ruts.

I got as far as yer man's gates and turned in to go up the driveway. Got about 5 metres only and I could go no further. reversed out and went home again.

Watch out people for the back roads particularly those that are on high(ish) ground.

Apart from a bit of overnight snow (possibly) tonight there is a thaw here yesterday and today and it will continue slowly but will pick up a bit more momentum as the temperatures rise towards the weekend. Id imagine you will be fine.

Just a thought - tune into highland radio online and listen out for the weather details on the hourly news headlines.

Nooooooooooooooooo! :( Enough already! Snow in Lifford again - though last night's melted fairly easily earlier today. I hope tonight's will vanish as quickly. We've only just got back to normal and the roads are full of craters. Damned white stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,505 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

sheet ice all over the drimarone road this morning - rained at about 6:30am tok 20 mins to get enough of the windscreen clear to drive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Yesterday was pretty; my new policy is that if the road up here is white, I stay home.

Getting too old for these adventures.

    So I enjoyed the snow...

It was thick with ice and compacted snow.. and now all has gone in the night of rain.

Donegal, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon & Longford.

A spell of sleet and snow will occur late tonight and for a time on Wednesday with accumulations of 3 to 6 cm possible.

Most of the snow looks likely to fall during the morning & rush-hour before
clearer drier weather arriving in the southwest around midday will extend northeast to all areas during the evening!

    :)

Yes, once more all is white up here..... Getting used to it these days....

Wind rising so there may be drifting later if it continues to snow.

Yeah been snowing constantly very heavily since my post above nearly 2 hours ago..not really sticking where its already melted but its getting quite thick now where its falling on the stuff left over from last night. If its this prolonged tonight its fairly going to be bad tomorrow morning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,453 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Snowing fairly heavy at the moment in the twin towns buts its lying only on the stuff that was there this morning and on the higher ground.

Starting to brighten a little now.

parts of lk are at a standstill now still, had a guy in the shop there earlier saying it took him two hours to get from kilmac to the dry arch. supposed to be alot of small crashes up the mountain top direction too. i am not looking forward to the drive home!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,967 ✭✭✭mrmac

Drove from Derry to L'kenny tonight at 8pm, and it was clear roads until Murray Motors. Coming in the dual carraigeway was very slushy, with everyone going at less than 40mph.
The gritters are out, but housing estates are not being done, so be cute in the morning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 913 ✭✭✭Ronan Keating

Takes over an hour to get from Ballybofey to LK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,198 ✭✭✭buckfasterer

anyone know if anything serious happened up at the mountain top this eve? the traffic was just unreal....a disgrace that they were allowed to get that bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 488 ✭✭theblueirish

I left Bonagee at 7pm heading to Kilmacrennan, arrived there at 9pm.
The road up from Dunnes of Ilistrin (sp) to the mountain top was pure ice, alot of cars and a few lorries got stuck.
I was really glad to see the numbers of people, men and women out pushing cars, gritting the roads even putting blankets down in front of car so they could get some grip.
A tractor was pulling the lorries, vans and an ambulance up the hill and most of the cars were able to drive up with a bit of a push.
I came back towards Letterkenny again at 10 and everything was cleared, still a few cars on the roadside that people had abandoned but road had been gritted and was easliy passable.
If any of the guy or gals that helped out are reading this a big thank you for all you efforts, good to see that there is still decency around.

Took me over an hour to get from Kilmacrennan to Lettekenny, normally a 10 minute run. Going down from the Mountain top to Letterkenny tried to change down from second to first gear and that was enough to put the car into a slide.

Unbelievably, some cars were overtaking between the centre islands. The last one to overtake me couldn't get stopped and ended up on the footpath.
