Hey, I don't know if this will help you out but Americans use Fibre as well as Calories and Sat Fat when calculating their points. Keep an eye out for any references to fibre and you'll know it's American. Also, if it's recipes you're looking at, the Americans will be using the imperial system (ounces) and the UK ones will mainly use the metric system (grams).

What points values are you looking for that you can't find in your book? You should have a search through this thread if you can't find something. Also, this website is really good http://www.freewebs.com/noreenblackett/ Someone else posted the link up the other day and I've been having a read. You'll see down the left hand menu that she has pointed a huge amount of foodstuffs!

    Thanks a million your a star !!

    Hi all,

Does anyone have any idea how many points are in lidl Linessa Wellness Eis? Three plastic containers come in the box, and each container has 2 "scoops" of some kind of ice-creamy dessert. I just had a some of the strawberry one -mmmmm

On the box it says each (170ml) portion has 161 cal and 3.0g fat (which works out at 3 points a container, by my calculations). Is this right? There's no mention of saturated fat, just 3.0g total. Do we assume that all the fat is saturated then (which I did to get 3 points)?

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

*If Saturated fat in not stated, divide the number of grams of fat by 2 and use that figure instead.

The rule is divide by 2, I am not sure what they tell you at WW meetings. If it was me I would get a similar item and see if it has sat fat listed. If you compare them and they have similar ingredients and similar fat content then they should usually have similar sat fat contents.

I would imagine if they are not openly declaring the sat fat content then it is relatively high, since the marketers know sat fat has a bad name and it might put some people off. I wonder if anybody has studied this in WW.

Yeah rubadub, we're told at WW that if the saturated fat isn't listed then divide the fat by two and calculate your points that way.

Senelra that gives each portion a 2.5 points value :)

    Hey doctorwhogirl...

a thick low fat sausage is 1.5 points
    normal one is 3.5 points
Thats assuming they are not fried!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭neuro-praxis

No, your average pork sausage, grilled, has 2 points. I use Clonakilty as they're so tasty, and 2 is plenty. Add a poached egg, grilled mushrooms and tomato and a slice of buttery toast, a cup of tea and you've got a yummy cooked breakfast for about 7 points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,859 ✭✭✭m'lady

oh ok..sorry I was reading from the ww book, I wouldnt be too clued in as I dont eat meat

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭neuro-praxis

No worries whatsoever m'lady, no need to apologise. What you said was right, but doctorwhogirl was asking for a the points in a normal Irish sausage, I think. The WW book listed a "thick low fat sausage" - something I'm not sure I've ever seen in an Irish supermarket! :)

Thanks guys!! They're good old Irish butcher sausages! 2 points is great! I'll have 2 and a poached egg and beans for dinner so! Fantastic! :D (and yum! ;)

oh! or even a tray of garlic and cheese chips?

i know special fried rice as your main meal from chinese is only 10 points, and is quite filling!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭neuro-praxis

A typical portion of chips ranges from 7.5 - 10.

A small tub of curry sauce is usually around the 2 point mark.

Garlic sauce is basically mayo. Ordinary mayo is 2 points for 1 tablespoon, so gauge how much you had from that.

Normal cheddar is approx 1 point per 10g. 1 square slice of cheese for your sambo weighs 20g, so you can see that's not much cheese at all.

When you add it all up it's really not worth it!

Depends on the place, if it is the big long tray or short one. I worked out calories for a chicken balls curry sauce & chips before. Next time you get a chinese just weigh out the tubs before eating, then weigh the empties. This was what I got
    rubadub wrote: »
Chips- 520g (no joke! my scales is fine)
    Chicken balls- 350g
    Sauce- 200g.

    http://points.ogo.ms/

If you take branded stuff and compare it
    http://www.mccain.co.uk/our-food/chips/chippy-chips/nutrition.aspx
Then 520g of those chips would have 1123kcal and 5.7g sat fat.

    A typical sauce http://www.pataks.co.uk/products/viewproduct.php?id=35&nut=v&amount=5&sort=r&offset=0&strName=&idProduct=35&idHeat=&strSignature=&idCategory=
200g would be 192kcal and 4g sat fat.

So in total 1315kcal and 9.7g sat fat which is 21points. That would be conservative too, as I expect they might use more fat. But of course this is just for one particular takeaway and portions sizes will vary.

Unless your Chinese does huge portions of chips then i would count about 9 ish points and then 3 for the sauce. If its the kind of chinese where you can see the oil floating then count a few points more.

I never eat garlic chips but i'd imagine they are way more because of the mayo and cheese.

Unless your Chinese does huge portions of chips
I have never gotten less than a huge portion in a Chinese! they really do give stupidly big portions.

Just back from the Chinese now, chips weighing in at 395g, so 853kcal, 4.3g sat fat, so 13.5 points. Again that is conservative using the McCains figures which are probably lower than usual to appear lower in cals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,166 ✭✭✭Edgedinblue

so would 13.5 be the same amount of points for a bag of chips from the chipper instead of chinese?

I usually get a smaller portion in chippers than chinese. If you get a single on its own you usually get more than if you got a fish n chips. Also some chippers give you loads, burdocks used to give massive portions (new burdocks open in dundrum today with free food all day- maybe shouldn't mention it here!;)).

You just have to weigh stuff a few times until you get an eye for it. Also some chippers might have more sat fat than others, the link I gave to mc-cains quoted low sat fat levels relative to overall fat. But they had some premium chips down the bottom which used dripping and have much higher sat fat levels. If you went by the "half overall fat" rule it would be quite high.

The best bet in most chippers would be no chips, just an unbreaded chicken fillet burger. Most people hit chippers after the pub with eyes bigger than their belly, you have gotten lots of calories from the booze so no real need for all that extra energy. Just order one thing at a time.

Depends on the takeaway I'm afraid, though many do use identical tubs. I can tell you satay sauce is peanut based and peanuts are around 7% sat fat, i.e. 7g per 100g, so it is not a great choice (well tastewise it is! but it will be high in WW points).

Usually you would get about 1 chicken breast in a portion, so that will be about 150g of chicken, the rest will be satay sauce, but could be bulked out with veg in some places. You could check jars of satay sauce in supermarkets for figures per 100g, or check online, I would go for richer sauces since most takeaways do use rich oily sauces (why they are so nice!)

For the fried rice I would get figures from the likes of uncle bens ready cooked microwaveable fried rice. You can find most figures online and then put them into the online points calculator

    http://points.ogo.ms/

If you weighed up the 2 tubs separately I could have a go estimating it. Weigh tubs full and empty.

Does anyone know how many points are in the Large Cuisine de France rolls (this is the third size up)? I removed all the doughy part on the inside. Also I believe that there's a new wine on the market that only has 5 points in the bottle. I know we were told at a meeting but I cant remember the name of it. Anyone care to enlighten me??
