The BNP may have let their skinheads grow out and put on a suit - but they are still the same knuckle dragging fascist thugs they always were.

"We got rid of one strange language, now we're faced with many, many more....."
From "For what died the sons of roísín".....

Lolol I so nearly quoted that exact bit of bigotry earlier in the thread to prove the point about the insidious nature of Nationalism, and then along you come and prove all my points for me with your belief in makey uppy "races", and being all proud for something you had absolutely nothing to do with that's down to random chance. Good man.

Nationalism sucks shíte and the BNP are a damn good example of how much.

While taking away the opportunities and livelihoods of the native people of this country.

Immigration destroys our livelihood. The Brits took our Irish land and crops during the plantations, the immigrants are taking Irish jobs and social housing homes today.

There are over 400,000 Irish unemployed now. In 2008, 90% of all new jobs went to immigrants. Can anyone see the logic to this?

I hate this crap. It really grinds my gears that people try and compare the unjust treatment of the Irish under British rule, to immigrants (from Britain, Europe, and further afield) coming here to work / build a better life.

It's a ridiculous comparison- has an immigrant ever banned you from speaking Irish, forcibly took away your land ( note: not all immigrants live in social housing, you know- some manage to buy or rent homes just like the Irish- imagine that ), burned down your house like the Black and Tans did to people in the past, etc?

No. It's so insulting to immigrants to compare them coming over here to live, to what (some) of the British did to us in the past.

I'm unemployed, but y' know what? I'm not going to sit on my arse and complain on the internet about immigrants who have sweet F/A to do with it- it's up to me to get an education and a job. Scape-goating others for my problems won't help.

Agreed. Certain Irish people being incandescent with rage in relation to how our ancestors were repressed and how Irish people experience discrimination in Britain, then being really sh1tty to immigrants here... it doesn't even make sense.

Hmmm... I'm not patriotic/nationalistic myself, but at the same time, I understand it coming more into play in situations where a people/nation is being repressed by another one.

Yup, I'd be the same way myself. It makes sense to be somewhat nationalist / patriotic (to a degree) when your culture/people is being oppressed, like it was in Ireland in the past.

Like, I generally think it's stupid to be proud of one's skin color- but I can understand why somebody might say they are proud to be black, when they have been told for so long that they should be ashamed.

    I'm unproud of being white!

Firstly, my pasty white complexion reflects the waves of sun more than darker skin, and thus preventing me from getting a tan!

And secondly, the perfect man is tall, dark and handsome. I'm neither!

I'm referring to anywhere - Palestine, South Africa... all countries that have been colonised, not just Ireland/Northern Ireland.

Well it's the same story more or less although there's around 10 or so different nations in SA (other than the ones they were reacting to most recently)

If SF could seperate themselves from their past then I would have a lot more respect for them.
Delighted to read the news that you have respect for Sinn Féin.

Nationalism attracts the BNP type of person, no matter what country.

There is nothing particularly wrong with Nationalism, it's some peoples interpretation of it that is the problem.

The BNP will not amount to much because they only appeal to low IQ people who see someone who was not born in the UK and think "dey tuk ar jerbs".

There was a BBC program on before xmas where they were interviewing people going into the Job Centre Plus (mandatory I believe when you are on the dole). They were asking a guy who would just looked like a complete waste of space: drinking a can of beer, barely there tash, baseball cap on back of head, famous brand hoodie, stripe on side of pants etc etc, and asked what kind of job he wanted. He was quite specific: driving a forklift or other sit down job that was good money but not in an office with women. He was also asked who his next vote would be for. The BNP says he.

Thats who votes for them. 2.2 million of them at last count. Not all BNP voters, just the ones that read the Sun (probably) (for the articles no doubt).

Nationalists=Nationalists. So really they're fairly similar at the root of it all.

Nationalists = Nationalists, so EVERY nationalist political party in the world has the exact same ideology? That's ridiculous.
That's like saying bread = bread, therefore there's no difference between white bread and brown bread.

Sinn Fein are a moderately left-wing party that advocates socialist democracy. They are not a racist party and are not anti-immigration.

The BNP are an extreme far-right party whose ideology is based purely on racism.

To answer the original question, I think the BNP are twats. They're entitled to their views but they're still twats.

But given the nature of Nationalism, and given the nature of humans, then it is absolutely inevitable that such people will keep on arising. What's more, when times are tough, it's a further inevitability that the numbers of such monkeys will grow.

Nationalism in and of itself is an ideology.

Imagine it as pasta if that helps. There are lots of different pasta dishes, but at the end of the day pasta=pasta. Or are you going to argue that isn't the case

Completely agree. Look, I've seen enough posts from a certain type of SF/RSF poster on here to see they do have a BNP type Irish supporter.

In fairness to them, I think it's directed at Unionists in NI, not so much English people. The "Ireland is 32 counties, if you don't like it, leave" type of poster!

I think most SF supporters find that reprehensible too.

The figure is more like 800,000 based on the last General election and local council elections.

Nationalism comes about for different reasons.

In the simplest of terms,SF came about because Irish people didn't particularly care for being invaded by the British.
BNP came about because a bunch of xenophobes can't stand immigrants coming over to Britain and working.
Also, there's more to SF's ideology than nationalism. Economically and socially, they're miles apart from the BNP. You can't say two parties on opposite ends of the left-right spectrum are exactly the same just because they come under the vague heading of nationalism.
Imagine it as pasta if that helps. There are lots of different pasta dishes, but at the end of the day pasta=pasta. Or are you going to argue that isn't the case
I'm afraid I don't eat pasta so your comparison is lost on me. But I'm sure it's a rivetting and well thought out example.

Ah, but they do attract a certain type of support that don't think what nationalism is? Yes? Many couldn't tell you any SF policies barring a 32 county Ireland.

Same as many FF/FG/Labour supporters don't know their parties original ideals.

Thats exactly what I've been trying to say on this thread for ages, but couldn't use the right words. SF's casual demographic would probably be a lot like the BNP's in UK.

In the North they seem pretty aware, like many irish nationalist estates have anti-racism murals for example but in Dublin from my experience with people in school who would say they are Sinn Féin supporters are mainy concrentrated on the 'Tiocfaidh ar la' 'hate the brits' mentality rather than what the party stands for overall.

*sorry for the wording, i can't actually explain what i mean properly, but hopefully you'll get what im getting at*

Ah ok, I see your point a bit more clearly now.
Yeah it's true SF unfortunately does still attract a few....undesireables we'll call them. Idiots who still have an "UP THE 'RA" mentality. But the majority of SF supporters do not fall into that category, and I think it's unfair to compare them with BNP supporters. Most SF supporters do not subscribe to the racist, anti-immigrant attitudes that all BNP followers would go by.

You might have a basis for comparing BNP supporters with RSF suporters, who do have that "UP THE 'RA" attitude.
