My school has actually been pretty good for sex ed, compared with what I've heard from other people's experiences. My SPHE teacher spent ages on sex ed every year and she'd literally answer anything. This year for religion they invited random speakers in, to talk to us about different things. We had two different crisis pregnancy agencies, one who were like "Ah sure, it's graaaand, we're here to help, no need to worry", they almost seemed to encourage us to get pregnant. And the other told us why abortion is the most horrendous thing you could ever do. Kind of at opposite ends of extreme, but at least they talked about it. Also had someone in to talk about STDs.

Last time i got some "proper" sex education was in 6th class, when somebody asked what masturbation was the answer we got was "it's a very selfish and dirty thing, you should never do it."
Now that's just advice that should not be listened to! :o :pac:
... and we all know you didn't! :p:D

(Meh, neither did I, for that matter!)

Actually, Kate, you should have asked why it was selfish, did she mean you should only masturbate other people?

Grigori Rasputin ("the Mad Monk") was in a cult that used wild orgies to bring themselves closer to God

I think our society as a whole is becoming more comfortable with sex and sexuality. This is going to drip down to younger people.

Someone on the previous page said that they wished they had a teacher who'd just come in and be straight with them. I believe that there are teachers who wuld be willing to do this but the reality is that they'd probably be sacked in some schools if they were to.

As a consequence of our school system's inability to provide adequate Sex Ed, a lot of young people are unprepared when it comes to having sex. My younger brother (18 now) and his girlfriend know that they can talk openly to me or my girlfriend so I suppose that's great for them. But what if someone doesn't have that kind of support? They might not have family, or not have that sort of relationship with anyone.

Maybe threads like this have a big part to play in this whole situation. A place where young people can openly talk about sex and ask questions if they feel the need. I know it would have set me at ease to be able to ask some anonymous internet person one or two things before my first time!!!

As a teacher I'd be very willing to be straight with the students. I don't teach anything that would allow me to do so though, and even if I did, the school is under the patronage of the church and it most likely just would not be allowed. Many of my colleagues would be willing to do the same.

The senior classes, though, don't tend to do SPHE or anything like it. The one class where they could have an open discussion would be, ironically, Religion, and that is just not going to happen. Not officially anyway.

The problem is that Ireland is a religious society with a non-religious population. Schools are at the centre of this. I would class myself as fairly religious, but that would not govern my sexual beliefs. The chances to spread a balanced view in schools are limited.

Yep, you've elegantly expressed what I mean :D

You're the ideal candidate. Young enough to still understand "the kids of today". Old enough to be have a bit of experience under the belt.

Because what you crave at that age is straight talking, preferably from someone not the same age as your parents.

But you're confined by the rules of your institution, and this is the case all over the country. It's a pity it isn't seen as that big an issue because young people don't have a vote, and parents (in general) just don't seem to care enough about it.

SPHE is actually the biggest joke ever the dept. of education came up with. It's even worse than the Irish syllabus... and I've some fairly strong views on that!

As for religion class, there's a chance to learn things except the teacher is such a twonk.

\o/ I'm young enough to understand 'the kids of today'? Does that mean I'm cool? Ha, in yore face kiddies!

Thing is, even if young people had a vote, and even if parents cared enough, it would still be practically impossible to implement a course dealing with the real issues surrounding sexuality in the majority of schools because of the widespread religious involvement in schools. It is such a pity because while there are people like myself who did not need to be told about everything, there are so much more who know so little about sex and the issues surrounding it. It is these people who are being let down.

    LOL.

She's right though, this thread is probably one of the best pieces of the whole website. It's a fantastic resource that deals with the basics, clears up the misconceptions and allows young people to break out from behind an old taboo.
The fact that it hasn't been locked/moved to the S&S forum is a testament to how well-run this part of the forum really is.

Just talking in school today about sex and the likes and some of the girls parents know about the more physical sides of their relationships and help them out with contraception.I wish my parents were like that.

mine still preach abstinance till marriage and id say unless i was like 26 and in a like 4 year relationship my mam would think its wrong and even then she wouldnt be too happy.

    Thats a balls.
I decided feck it im not hiding it. Left condoms in open view in my room when I was 17(hadnt had sex yet, just got them to get the nerves of buying them out of the way and left them out).
Of course they were seen and they asked why I had them. Explained I was in a relationship a long time(which they knew) and that we'd thought about it and we were eventually gonna have sex.
Accepted, given little lecture on everything and that was that :)

theyre just old fashioned i guess

Lol, in fairness, Janey, I would argue that a mature conversation about sex doesn't always have to be a completely solemn one, and especially when dealing with teenagers.

As an old teacher of my own used to say "life is too serious to be taken solemnly" ... and if there's one aspect of life which I think that applies to more than others, this is it ...

Indeed, and the smilies in my post indicated a joke. :)
