nah, didnt google for a way to insult Carlty in french, its a line from a song that was out in france last year. It basically means, talk to the hand cos you're doin my head in!! Or talk to the hand, im crazy in the head to directly translate. Hmm. :P

The only motivation ya need is imagining getting into GV!

Well, did 5K in 38 minutes tonight so an improvement of 2 minutes on Sunday. Thought I'd ran a bit quicker than that so was a little disappointed but happy I felt much better during it than the first time. Can't imagine being able to improve that by at least another 5 minutes but I suppose it was only my second time road running (beep beep) so hopefully I will get there eventually.

If anyone here has an ipod I would highly recommend getting nike plus for it. It really is a great motivational tool. You can register online and set your self weekly or monthly targets, and each run you do it'll tell you average speed, fastest km etc, as well as being able to check distance travelled while in the middle of a run. Also has an option to go on google maps and plan out your run online and it measures the distance for you.

    Thanks,

Just hope it works on mine;)

Have been having a look online as this sounds like a fantastic birthday pressie for Mr MBC as he's very into running and keeping track of progress and planning etc but it seems I would also have to buy him the corresponding Nike running shoes for the sensor to be placed into the sole as well or am I reading it wrong? Thanks :)

So I managed 2 miles in 20 minutes last night, happy with my improvement even if it is slight. Going for 3 miles tonight, wish me luck. It might all go wrong.:o

Technically you're meant to buy the shoes to go with it, but being a cheap git I took my Asics and a stanley knife and cut out a hole the size of the sensor out of the shoe's padding, popped it in and put the insole back on top. Works perfectly and I can't notice any difference in shock absorbtion. :D

And if you dont get into the PSNI ( but you will ) there's a job waiting for you on Blue Peter!!! ( Here's one I made earlier!! LOL ):D

    MBC

I had a wee shufty last night on T'interweb and researched this whole Nike+ thing for the iPod.

The cheapest I found it was about £18 on play.com and they also do a pouch that will hold the nike plus which attaches to the shoelaces. It wasnt in stock so I found basically the same thing on running world. It was about £7 I think.

I really need to get back to the fitness so I went ahead and ordered it, I'll keep you posted about it.

I was aware that it might be a bit "gimmicky" but I spent some time reading reviews online and they all seemed positive, so for about £25 which wont break the bank, I thought it worth a go.

Thanks MGH, I read a lot of the reviews too and they did seem pretty favourable. Let me know what you think and if it works well for you I'll order one too.

Went out another run last night - found it really difficult as we run along the seafront and it was so windy. I got a stitch and really felt like my legs were just going to give up at one point. Disappointing as I'd done the same run a couple of nights before and found it quite easy (although it took me 38 minutes). I did the 5K in 36.55 minutes which is an improvement and to be honest I didn't care about my time I just wanted to get it over with without collapsing. I was surprised to have improved the time as it was so hard. Will be out again tomorrow night - Mr Motivator (hubby) won't let me give up lol. I'm not looking forward to it

I need a training buddy, half the battle is motivation!!! I certainly think the light nights and mornings help too. I prefer exercising in the morning tho, gets it done and out of the way.

I'll keep you posted on the Nike+ it should be here mid week and then there's no excuses....yee-ikes!

Thanks smyff. I'm hoping it'll be easier tomorrow night and I'll feel better about the whole training thing lol. At the minute I dread having to go out running.

Please let me get 'the call' at some point after all of this!!! :o

    Hi Mr Fug

When I first started running/jogging on the treadmill I managed 1.5 minutes before having to walk or die. I kid you not, I really was that unfit. Within 6 weeks of building this up slowly on a pretty much daily basis (back when I still felt motivated :() I was able to comfortably run the 5K inside 32 minutes without having to stop/walk at all. Obviously this was on the treadmill and I didn't realise it would be so different/much harder on the open road . Anyway....my point being, you will be amazed how quickly you build your fitness up. It's my lungs that are causing most of my problems too (although sometimes my legs like to join in). According to Mr MBC the key is to get loads of oxygen into your lungs during a run so lots of long deep breaths (not as easy as it sounds, I know!). Also, as far as I am aware, if you cannot complete the 5K without stopping in GV they give you a training programme to get you up to speed (so to speak) and as long as you put the effort in while you're there you will be fine.

Couple of boring questions: 1) How much PE is there per week & what kind of thing do they make you do?
    2) How long does PE sessions take & do they mess you about like say after PE that they want you in uniform in 5mins etc?
    3) If you break into a walk on the 5k do they b0ll0ck you and let you finish or tell you to stop?
I'm over 35, not particulary out of shape but have asthma and can treadmill the 5k in just under 35m but have to walk in parts to get a 2nd wind. To not stop and walk is nearly impossible for an asthma sufferer, but I'm still getting there in under 35m, so whats the problem psni fitness instructors???lol

Sorry for the questions, but grateful if an 'insider' could answer. BTW anyone else as unfit as me in the May intake?

Unfortunately I am neither an 'insider' or an expert on fitness but here's what I *think*.

I'm pretty sure the 5K has to be done in under 33 minutes. There was a good training schedule posted somewhere on the board for the treadmill to get aerobic fitness up. It was someone already in Garnerville that posted Garnerville's training programme if you are having trouble with the 5K run. Also, rather than stop and walk, could you not slow your pace but still be jogging? I really don't think walking during the 5K will be accepted.

Maybe try speaking to your asthma nurse? My husband really struggled with his running (he's asthmatic) until he got his medication changed. Now he's about to run a half marathon.

And I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure there will be quite a few doing the Garnerville exercise programme!

Thanks, I have inhalers which I should but try but avoid using. I'm sure if
you whipped out an inhaler before a run they'd crucify you!

Also if i changed my medication now, then Id have to inform them etc & prob open up a new stewards inquiry! lol

If all this fitness is to get you up to speed for your PCA, but you can show that you can easily pass your PCA then WTF??? I take it you cant use your ipod? lol - which does help alot I have to say!

So try and make my walk look like a jog and I might escape extra PE? Do they not understand that no amount of extra fitness is going to make you improve if you suffer from asthma? I wouldn't say I was completely unfit but even if I was as fit as a butcher's dog I would still have problems with my breathing when running.

You sound like my husband - was really bad at taking his steroid inhaler  but his new inhaler is seretide (I'm trying to get my daughter started on this now) and he just takes two puffs at night and he has hardly needed the ventolin at all since starting it. And before he was using the ventolin at least 4 times per day, every day. So start using your inhalers properly Mr!!!!! :D and you should notice a difference. Men

i've got asthma too - it sounds to me like you haven't got yours under control properly. loads of top athletes have asthma (steve redgrave!), and it doesn't affect their performance. you need to go see your doctor if you can't control your breathing while exercising. unless your asthma is severe, it shouldn't hold you back from doing anything.

what did you say during your medical? they wouldn't hold it against you for using your inhaler during the 5k, they know you take it and have passed you as medically fit! and i hate to say it, but if you have to stop during running to get a second wind, its more likely to do with your fitness than your asthma.

dont think they would mate! im pretty sure they wont mind things like that providing the comdition is treatable and ur treating it properly! i have asthma as well ( on the treadmill i can do the 3 mile in 24 mins... thot i was good till i ran outside and only managed 1.5 mile in 17 mins! ad that killed me) anyhoo if u have one of them inhalers ur suppoesed to take every day even if u have no problem, my advice is to take it everyday. i never used to as i thought hey my asthma aint bad.. but then u doo have bad days! i started takin it and my bad days are fewer and farer between! althought that could be due to the increase in physical activity as the more u excersice the less asthma will bother u!

thats my 2 shillins tho and only from my point of view, ur asthma situation will be different from mine and u no how to keep it in control! well good luck mate u have 2 months to train anyways!:D

Its as if you lot had read my mind.
I also have asthma (well i was wheezy once and headin away on hols so my doctor gave me an inhalor.) I havent seen anyone about it since.
I use my inhalor every night before i go to bed and when I go to the gym and it works instantly for me.
Because ive never really taken it any further with dr's etc i was wondering what your thoughts on me NOT taking it any further would be? Does that make sense? Imthinking maybe it would affect my chances....but then again if im not properly looking after it then I'll not perform my best.

Oh dont mind me, im just thinking out loud!!:P

    Well thanks for that!
You're entitled to your opinion, and you'd be right to say that my fitness has suffered over the years but even when I was younger and alot fitter I was ok over relatively short distances, played rugby regularly, but realised that running any sort of distance was causing me problems. Didn't even think I had a medical problem until diagnosed with 'severe - exercise induced' asthma in 2004.
I'll try with the inhalers when I go to the gym next. I go 3 times a week for last 7 months fyi suzie.( & work my butt off when I get there!)
24 mins Penis? thats f*cking fast! ,(for me anyhow) Shouldn't be any probs for you in the hotel.

This shouldn't effect your chances! I was open and honest about my condition and I have been offered a place (maybe you have had the call I dont know?) - so if you think you need to see your GP then do it, if you think it will help.
    :)
