The Fitness Thread

    How fit are we?
I have worked out that in order to run 5km in 30 minutes, I need to be running at 10km per hour. So I cranked the treadmill up and managed 13 minutes!

I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and swim at least twice a week, so I thought I was reasonably fit. Apparently I'm not.

So this is a thread for those who are trying to get fit, to offer support and share tips and have a wee whinge about being unfit.

    :D

I'm doing just over a mile every morning before work, it's just street running and I'm doing it in under 10 minutes.
    I know that's pretty reasonable, but it's only a mile and a bit, it's not 3!!

Keep intending to do another lap, but It's hard to persuade myself!

i managed it with an incline if that means something, running on and off since may lol. then i got a cold and didnt run and withiin 1 week i did 30mins stright legging it and i did it. i found it easy which was strange. i wanted to keep going.

i also think that it is highly important in the gym if you have an ipod with your favourite music (IE DANCE MUSIC) cause it keeps you going. first day i jogged there was a mix of tunes and i didnt like some, but the next time i brought my jap's eye pod with me and i listened to it. it really did help. make a mega mix of trance and youll run for years

I thought it was 5K in under 33 minutes for the laydeez? I run 5K a few times per week normally in about 31-32 minutes. Today I did it in 31.15. I ran at 9.5KM for the first 25 minutes or so, then 10Km/h for 3 minutes, then 10.5 and then 11.5 for the last minute. If it has to be run in under 30 minutes (can anyone confirm this who is already in???) I will have to speed up a bit! 10km/h is actually quite fast for a woman (my hubby says it's a jog ) and you would need to be pretty fit to be able to run at that for 30 minutes I would have thought - I'm sure everyone starting in Garnerville isn't that fit :eek:

Show off :p It should be much easier for a man! Which is why I assumed the men would have to be able to run it faster than us women  My OH can run 10K in not much more than 30 minutes but his legs are much longer than mine and his legs are obviously much stronger . We gave up going out running together as he was practically walking along side my jog  lmao and was getting a bit peed off.

    I hate running and I find it physically uncomfortable because my ( o ) ( o ) jiggle and it's quite painful. :(

I'm going to have to strap them down for the big run. Masking tape anyone??? :D:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭MORRI

I am not sure about the timing of the run. It didn't used to be timed, just as long as you finished! If it is timed I doubt if there would be different time limits for ladies and gentlemen as there is no difference in the time limit for PCA and no weight difference for the push pull. Any difference would lead to complaints of sexual discrimination which is why the height limit had to be abolished

got to agree with what has been said about different times for men and women, we're going to be doing the same job so standards should be the same.

as far as i am aware the time is 33mins, and that is constant running, no walking part of it.

bit of advice for y'all, if you are going to run do it outside because:

    1) the treadmill often lies! it might say you're doing 10kph but you may not be.

    2) if you are going to use the treddy, make sure you set incline to 1-2% as this will help replicate road running.

    3) you have to compensate for road running, uneven surfaces and varying inclines/declines or wind resistance that you wont get in the gym so road running is a better workout.

if you try and do 3miles a couple of times a week, even if your mixing walking and jogging you will stand yourself if far better stead for starting.

my fitness is reasonable, i've already done the PCA and passed it ok, i'm fitter than the average person but still not up to what i feel is a good standard, been doing a bit of running and am just trying to get the distance in my legs atm, my lungs could go for ages but its trying to get my legs adjusted and stopping the lactic acid buildup that is the killer.

remember as well if you are running on your own that you may not be running to a similar standard as running with/against a group. you will push yourself more running with a group, the adrenaline will be pumping and mainly you will push because you dont want to look a prat!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭MORRI

Sound advice from pb999 however I would qualify that with anytime I ran with a group the only qualification needed to not look a prat was to finish in front of the rotund asthma sufferer, which I (barely) managed everytime

Thanks for the clarification - it's a relief to know I can already meet the standard on the very small chance I ever need it!

As for the different times for men and women I just assumed (obviously wrongly :o) that men would be expected to run faster, push/pull harder etc than the women. But as you say men and women are expected to do the same job so I can understand why the tests should be the same. I never was a women's libber. I'm quite happy for men to open doors for me and lie over a puddle for me to walk over them :D. Time for a rethink perhaps :(

Does anyone know how often we run the 5 k?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 171 ✭✭Ali08

I'm really glad of this fitness thread....I'm not the fittest but I had been doing 3 miles on the treadmill there until I got that pesky flu and my lungs havent been copin with much since...but really its the push/pull part I'm most worried about.

I'm under 8 stone and my spindly arms arent up to much. i know a girl of about the same build as me who failed An Garda Siochana's PCT over the head of the push pull, but at least you dont need it to get into PSNI.... Anyhoo any advice on buildin arm-muscle strength would be really appreciated, esp simple things I can do at home rather than goin to the gym??

I am no expert but I would guess push ups (proper man ones) would help with the push bit and maybe some work with a small set of weights like

    axThumbNail.aspx?FILE=126943.jpg&WIDTH=340&HEIGHT=340
    http://www.jjbsports.com/weights-and-training-accessories/golds-kettle-bell/prod_126943.aspx
these are just the first I found with a quick search only £30 for 12kg, do lots of squatting to help beef up your legs cos they do a lot of the work in the push pull, if you are under 8st but over 5' 4" or there abouts it will not be too bad.
    Good luck

There's a thought! I need to do a bit of work myself and my wife reckons all peelers are banging away like a drummer on the 12th so why dont we all start the training for that part of the job first, it does no harm to be prepared and it could save you a fortune on batteries;)

I though the psni do a push pull exercise? Im sure I saw it on the little dvd and video on their website? is it something like 25kg you have to push pull? if ur taller and a bit heavier it is a bit easier, not that i have done it but according to physics!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭MORRI

Yes they do a push pull, I think Ali means you dont have to pass it to get in, though you have to pass it before your training is over:)

just to answer a few questions for you guys. you have to run the 5k in 35minutes (thats men and women) get used to running on an incline because there is quite a few on the trail.
we have 10 weeks done and have only done it once, and that was week 6 or 7 so you have plenty of time to get ready.
PCA will be done in week 2, 10 and possibly a couple more times (these are only for practice) before you have to do the important one at the end. thats 3 laps in 3:43 and then straight to the push pull after with no break in between were you have to push atleast 26.

Do many people fail the push/pull, particularly woman? I'm really worried I won't pass it?

a few people fail it so just get working on building up your strength. most who fail it only fail by a small amount. a good bit of it is just down to technique though. plus it is set to just one height which some people find awkward because they are a bit smaller

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 120 ✭✭pb999

yeah the push pull is set to replicate the height of an average person which is 5ft 10ins, so if you are taller than that then its easier than if you were shorter. pushups (proper man ones) and some leg work such as squats would help build up the strength needed, but as connor says alot of it is technique.

To be honest i think everyone would be better not training at all before they start, imagine all the hours wasted to find out you didnt really need to put in that much effort. All the time you could have spent with family and friends that you can never get back, relationships torn apart by the urge to be faster and stronger for what? Money? Power?
