I'm trying to set up my new birthday present (ipod Touch) to connect to the TCD wifi. So far I've put in the proxy and the port and I got through to something called 'Campus Manager' from Bradford Networks, but that's not accepting my tcd username/password. Advice, please?
Of course it isn't. That's the access page to the whole college nac system :)

Leave the proxy authentication fields blank.

So...what do I put into the college nac system username/password fields? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I know nothing of such things.

I left the proxy authentication fields blank, but it's still not working...
please tell me there is hope. :(

OK, this is what I did:

main menu>settings>WI-FI (in grey it says TCDwifi-firststeps> now it says WI-FI [ON] and under 'Choose A Network' it says 'TCDwifi-firststeps' with a tick beside it and the signal symbol. If I push the blue arrow...
it says it's on DHCP, gives the IP, subnet mask router, etc. If I scroll down on that page, I have HTTP Proxy onto Manual.

The server is now proxyA.tcd.ie and the port is 8080. I have Authentication [ON] but the username and password is blank.

If I go onto google.com, the NAC control server keeps coming up..

    hmm...what am I doing wrong?

ah you don't connect to TcdWifi_first_steps
    you connect to TCD Wifi

it takes a while to come up some times,
and might only be available in some places.

"TCDwifi" is a hidden network; you will not detect it unless you manually enter the details in the "Other network" option.

Got me one of them fancy ipod touches... but wanna know how to connect it to the college network. Anyone have any idea? I'll probably have to drop into ISS services.

Not possible. I have iphone and iphone 3G they don't allow you. thats cus, you have to install antivirus on your device, but i dnon't think anywone in TCD will get down into developing an iphone/ ipod touch hack that allows you to do so. I just bought iphone 3G on a bill pay, so now my TCD emails are auto updated on my iphyone every 15 minutes, and i dn't need to worry about queing up for those slow computers that take half an hour to fully loadup from login. You could have a lunch untill they load, especially the ones at the window of Hamilton library, swear to god. Those are slow as hell!

    Yes, it is possible.
Officially, no it is not. Don't go ask iss to set it up for you.

See, wasn't that hard was it?

See if ISS weren't so incompetent then you wouldnt be able to get it on the network in the first place ;)

After making me read 8 pages, I can say that I made right decision of getting iPhone 3G on a bill pay, cause I get internet anywhere. I still gonna give it a try tomorrow in TCD

Got it working- but I can say that the wifi in the college is far from excellent- it comes and goes frequently.

Hang, do I register with th NAC? What's the story with that? Have the proxy changed and all...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

No registration necessary. If you're being diverted to the NAC ur doin it wrong. (Probably using firststeps)

Honestly, I did this when 2.0 first came out about 6 months ago for the ****s 'n' giggles, but if you don't even know what a mac address is, you really shouldn't be doing this, or your laptop might not get back onto TCDwifi at all.
"Oh, hi IS Services, can you fix my laptop's connection? I've been macspoofing an iPhone's address but it ****ed up" isn't going to go down too well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

    No mac-spoofing necessary.

Yea, getting on to the network is nothing special.

The fact that a rather unique flaw exists is special.

I like iPhone. Internet pretty much anywhere you mean using TCD wifi or you get free internet from your network provider even though you are on prepay?

Jon, do you know if the Firefox user agent switcher thing works on Bitbuzz wifi for iPhone spoofing?

    Clever thinking.

What authentication (if any) is used to verify the iphone?

That's what I'm not sure about. You used to be able to do it on the AT&T spots in Starbucks (in the USA) when the iPhone first came out, but they caught on to the user agent switching. In fact, there's actually a mode built into Safari specifically for iPhone webpage compatability testing. However, at least in the USA, you have to provide your iPhone's phone number on a force-redirect page and then they text you an authentication code or something.. not sure what the story is on Bitbuzz, but they do say that you only get the Wifi for 12mo so there must be some method of enforcing exclusion.
