Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

yeah...same here..my ping times are generally between 90 to 210....am about 1km from dunboyne exchange...support chap at bt said my line attenuation and line noise was brilliant and the problem was to do with my computer!! I should do a "pc tune up test" and ensure my windows programmes were stable! oh i get it ....its my fault, nothing to bother themselves with then eh?.....talk about passing the buck.
anyway, as bt seem uninterested/ unwilling to take any corrective action i think it is time to take my business elsewhere. I wonder if we all decided to walk would they then decide to take an active interest in our complaints.
Gentlemen , i believe the time is upon us. Lets walk the walk together.

Just an update on my case with BT. Seems both they and Eircom are aware of the issues on the pelletstown exchange. Good to see support clearly stating the problem. You normally feel like your details are taken and nothing is done. Now, wonder how long it will take to be fixed :)

"We are aware of a congestion problem at the Pelletstown exchange. Eircom are currently investigating this problem but we don't have a time frame for a solution yet"

I queried this today with tech support and was told that there are currently no problems with the pelletstown exchange. One of us got the facts and it wasn't me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 molc

That really is weird. I never mentioned the pelletstown exchange in my dealings, so they worked that one out on their own.

Course, given the body of evidence I provided, they could just be using it as a way to fob me off...

I'm with BT on Pelletstown exchange as well, and last 4 days evening speeds drop to 20kBps. I was calling to support every day, and the answers they give change over time. First, they told it was my line, requested line test, downgraded me to 6mb, then 5mb, but line test was ok and the situation did not change (i.e. great service in mornings and sharp drop in speeds by 20 times at around 7pm).

Then they said that there was some problem at the exchange on Tuesday evening, which was fixed by Wednesday morning. But situation did not improve again.

Today at last they told me that it was contention on 7.6mb package (Option 3 in BT), and that "maybe, probably, we don't know, but maybe another package will have less contention" so they downgraded me to 3mb (Option 2) as a test for few days. The guy clearly said that they resell of Eircom packages and it's Eircom who can control or clear situation with contention, and that BT cannot even know what real contention is. At the same time he claimed that there's no problem at the exchange itself, that Eircom is not doing any works, etc.

We had pretty long talk about contention, bandwidth, exchange capacity, oversubscription and people downloading all the time, he said that there's download cap of 30GB, but reasons that this cap will be achieved in less than a day and they would throttle that user did not really find any understanding from his side (he understood the issue, but failed to follow any conclusions).

So I'm having the same issue, not with BT but with Pelletstown Exchange. My connection is with Magnet and my download speeds on a 4meg line are peaking at a mighty 30/40kbs in the evening. I've gone through the support process with Magnet and everything is fine and they concluded that the issue is Contention. Given that they dont control the exchange there's not a whole lot they can do with it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 molc

Wonder do we have any eircom users on the pelletstown exchange here. Due to the lack of seperation of the line from Eircom, they might at least have a chance of getting Eircom to look at the issue :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭peterjmaxwell

There are a couple of neigbours in my apartment block on eircom alright. I can see 3 or 4 wireless ssid's most of the time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 qbasic

I got downgraded to 3Mb (option2) and it has made absolutely no difference. The contention excuse is not good enough, contention can be used to explain why you may not get your full download speed i.e 300kBs on a 3Mb line etc but I am on dial up speeds 90% of the time, once at 4am on a weekday I got approx 80% throughput.

This is clearly a problem either with the infrastructure or severe over subscription!

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 molc

Aye, at off peak times, the connection is fairly decent but the rest of the time it's dire. By posting here, I'm really trying to get more people on this exchange up in arms and chasing Eircom for a solution as working with BT so far hasn't gotten a solution.

Wouldn't mind but I was an eircom customer upto a month ago, when I could have pushed them on this (course there was no problem then, typical!) :/

If eircom customers are also experiencing this they must be aware of the issue but don't seem be bothered enought to resolve it any time soon.

I for one will be taking this up with consumer rights http://www.consumerconnect.ie/eng/.

I have been having the same problem as everyone else. I got on to BT Tech support for over an hour yesterday. Did every test possible. They are not really interested in ping times and speedtest.net stuff. They ask to do stupid stuff "Can you dsconnect your eircom phonewatch alarm - it might be that, or it could be Sky digital". Just make sure you are ready for these stupid trouble shooting tips.

They gave me a url : url.ie/qv. It starts to download a 600MB file. On a 3MB connection you should get 600 kbps - I was getting between 49 and 55 ! One tenth of a 3MB connection. Anyways they are putting me back to a 3MB connection in the next few days. They didnt mention a charge but other posters have said they were going to be charged 30 euro. I hope it works - the thought of giving eircom my money makes me ill :)
*UPDATE* Problem sorted. Sorry guys I wasn't very clear. Yes a 3Mb should max out at 350 but i meant my 3MB upgrade (7.6MB) should be at 600kpbs. Anyways disconnecting Phonewatch is never an option. I agree sometimes these measures work but not if (like me) you have done all of these already, told the tech guy that but he still thinks its the problem. He told me he hadn't a clue what to do so I had to tell him to drop me back to the standard 3MB connection. It took 6 persistent calls and nearly 2 weeks of waiting for BT to do it. It came through today and broadband back to normal with good speeds. These upgrades are causing trouble to so many people. BT's line is that they have officially fixed it - obviously not though. Thanks for the advice !

Anyone in the Dundalk / Louth area having problems with their speeds and pings this past week from the hours of 5pm till 1 - 3am ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 372 ✭✭cerbeus

    Based in Drogheda myself.

And since the upgrades, went from 2MB to 3MB supposedly, the pings and speeds vary. Seems to be very poor from 2pm til 1am. If I didn't know any better I'd swear Eircom were doing some form of traffic shaping during the most popular hours.

Same. It's been going alright for the past few weeks since the first fix after THAT "upgrade" but speeds and synchs died a death of the weekend just gone, again. Timing out, non-responsive and lots of disconnects. A guy I IM came on the other night to ask why I kept logging in and out of MSN every few minutes, said that he'd had at least 30 pop-ups that I'd signed in/out.

You know as happy as I've been with BT for the last 5 yrs even with their billing and CS problems, their recent performance and attitude taken are making me consider returning toi eircon for the first time ever.

[edit] F*ck this, 3 disconnects and a complete death of my signal for about 5 mins since I posted this. Ping is all over the shop, speedtest is giving me about 800kbps on a 3meg line. Oddly enough upload speeds are not affected.

Same here, but switching back to Eircom won't make any difference I don't think.
Frist problem I had coincided with the upgrade and funny enough this latest fault coincides with Eircom's new Gamer pack

Yep. Something funny going on me thinks.
It's amazing how all of the people going back to Eircon immediately have all their problems solved. Now what could that indicate? Surely the Eircon lines aren't better quality, ah, aren't they all Eircons lines?
How do all of these people flooding back to Eircon not suffer from over crowded lines or things like that?

As I said, it seems a bit strange to me.

You've gone from a 3mb>7.6mb line from BT to a solid 3mb line with Eircom.
You wont be getting a free upgrade unless you ask for it now.
    Thats what I bet happened.

The reasons for the slowness and ping increases with BT is because as soon as your line is ready for the Upgrade of Death, you get those symptoms with or without speed increase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Skud

lads anyone know if bt increased their usage policy? im on 7.6 mb. I was being warned I was going to go over the limit for most of the month and now it's stopped, and im still under the usage limit of 30 gig... Eircom says 50 gig now and bt say unlimited on their site with an * so it's not really unlimited :D

Free upgrade? I don't want it. I'm a gamer. PING times are god to me...!

When EVER? do u get 7 meg downloads anyway!? who cares? 300Kbps is great.
U dont get them those share file programs, and how often are u in a hurry to download a 1 gig file?

Anyway, fast ping times = faster browsing of the web.

    Easy!

    mm.

ps: my line can handle up to 6meg. but that means crap pings. and 3 meg is cheaper anyway!

I had the above issues after the upgrade and was downgraded back to 3MB. A week after that and BT doing what ever they were doing the problem was solved.
Now the problem is back, slow speeds and ping times worse than ever i.e. 463ms and it's all coincided with the release of Eircom's "gamer pack".

I'm really, really, getting sick and tired of this and I keep asking myself what am I paying for

I just spent 30 minutes rebooting my modem trying to get a connection. Got one eventually, but only syncing at half my expected speed.

Have literally just paid for a new modem Linksys WAG160N, so I'll see if it makes any difference when it arrives. It had better.

Anyone know if Smart Telecom are any better, cause I don't think this problem is ever going to be unless, not unless Eircom get there finger out and change/upgrade lines & exchanges.

So much for the Minster saying the whole country will have broadband soon, that may happen but at what price, we all get broadband that can only run at speeds just above dial-up

It looks like the telephone network just can't handle the upgrades. Would I be correct in thinking that this responsibility would lay with Eircon? If so, they should be made to do something about it, although it does look like Eircom customers are getting their problems sorted.

Indeed it is Eircons responsibility but they don't seem to be bothered at all by the mess they've made. A friend of mine is with Eircom and experiencing the same problems and he's been told twice now by them that there is no such problems what so ever

I'm experiencing extremely bad latency over the past while with BT.

Our exchange has been upgraded too allow for the 7.2 broadband package.

I rang BT but they weren't very helpfull and just said they will look into it and hung up.....

I love too play games online, but now I can't

I used too live in an area where I could get smart broadband and my god that was like a dream connection.

I just wish all service providers could be as good as them.

I would say the entire broadband service dies. dial-up speeds for 50-60 Eur a month is a pathetic. Seriously look at the amount of people who have had utterly worthless service since the upgrades with no fix in sight, hope you get lucky and it doesn't turn out like that for you.

My pings and speeds died, speeds for me were not far from that of dial-up. Got it fixed for a while and then when Eircon brought out their new "Gamer Pack" my 3MB connection for the past 3 weeks from 5pm to 1am - 3am is round this  :

I'm in atlone and my download speed is gone as low as 5k/s, if I have anything on download, I cant even open a web page, I did a speed test but didn't save the image.

I rang BT and they told me that my bandwidth has been throttle because I downloaded over 30gig in a week, but the connection is like that for the last 2 weeks so I dont know where I could have downloaded over 30gb, there certainly isn't 30gb downloaded since it can barely do one thing at a time.

I'm switching ISP, anyone know if eircom is charging for cap when you go over 50GB?

    thanks

I suggest anyone that are having speed issues with BT (and all other providers for that matter) to lodge a complaint with them and then lodge a complaint with Comreg:

    Comreg Consumer Helpline: LoCall 1890 229 668 / (01) 8049668
    Email: consumerline@comreg.ie

The more the better and all providers along with Comreg can make and present a case to Eircom to try and get this speed issue resolved.
