    Well bollocks!

The one reason I never upgraded to the firmware 1.1.4 has popped up on firmware 2.0.

Yep, those 25c text messages to '9011' (on O2) have re-appeared and took €1.50 off me so far... and plenty more I suspect!

EDIT: On the plus side, here's a neat little tip I found regarding the 2.0 firmware.

To take a screenshot at any time, press and hold the Home button and then quickly tap the Power button (on top), your iPhone scren will flash white for a split second. A screenshot will then be placed in your camera roll.

That's a nice tip for the screen shot, great if you want to record the weather pics from the app!

My stupid work don't allow blackberry's etc. no push for me :(

gonna start a top apps for iphone thred now!

I have an iphone with software 1.1.4 and I want to upgrade to 2.0. I started the unlocking process but seem to have locked it. I think itunes had started to install the new software as if it were a legit iphone.

Anyone know how to get around unlcoking it again.

I have pwnage 2.0, iliberty etc...

    HELP!

Don't panic, I did the same, just set the phone to recovery mode and run the itunes upgrade again. Remember to press the option key when pressing ugrade/recover.

that screenshot works in 1.1.3 as well just hold the home button and turn the mute button on the screen will flash white and the picture will go to the camera roll, for those that are waiting for the idiot proof pwn for the pc!

Simply run through the Pwnage process again by using the firmware you used to restore to 2.0. But this time, choose 'No' in the 'Legit iPhone?' prompt.

Think I may have fixed the 9011 texts issues by SSH-ing into my phone, and removing the O2.ie settings for EDGE which were in a plist file.

If anyone else has the same problem, try the instructions here:
    1. Find out your iPhone’s IP Address in Settings>Wi-Fi by clicking on the small arrow next to your Wi-Fi Network.
    2. Open Cyberduck (you don’t have it? Get the best FTP-client for mac here http://cyberduck.ch)
    3. In Cyberduck, click on Open Connection. There,
    1. choose SFTP as the protocol to use
    2. enter your iPhone’s IP address as the server address
    3. root as user name
    4. alpine as password
    4. Once connected, go to /System/Library/Carrier Bundles
    5. You’ll see a lot of numbers. Don’t worry. Scroll down to end of the list to find human-readable names and choose your carrier.
    6. Download carrier.plist (if you do this with Terminal, open this file with nano)
    7. Double-click it to open it with Property List Editor
    8. Go to Root>apns>0 and change the value of apn (it’s sufficient to add an extra word, e.g. offline so you can undo changes later if you need to)
    9. Safe and upload the file to the same spot where you downloaded it off you iphone (be sure here, Cyberduck might fool you).
    10. Restart your iPhone and turn off airplane-mode. You can try if it worked by turning off Wi-Fi and trying to access a web page. If it says “unable to connect” you did everything right :)

Well it appears my phone is bricked. After the wifi shenanigans brought on by ziphone, I have tried iliberty, pwnage to get it to 1.1.4. and working. Zapped the baseband and bootloader. Rebuilt same with boot neuter(both 3.6/4.9). At one point I got the dreaded "phone needs repair screen". Got past that, and restored a virgin setup through iTunes(twice), but now I have a phone that boots up and locks when the startup screen launches. This is before any jailbreak/unlock/activate.

Sounds like the comm board is borked.:mad: Fúcking ziphone has been implicated in the majority of these problems.

DO NOT USE ZiPhone. Google ziphoned and see how many share the problem that damn fools bad code caused. That now means every single person but one I know that used ziphone, but one, has sooner or later had either wifi/bluetooth and other problems. NOt one person I know has had that issue with pwnage. Screwups yes, what looks like permanent damage? no

Dunno if anyone else has any ideas. I've pretty much exhausted mine.

That's a right balls! Have you tried putting it in both modes? The restore and the other one? The first time I went to unlock it yesterday I accidentally installed the official v2.0, maybe if you tried to do that (by the sounds of things you all ready have!) and then tried pwnage that might get ya somewhere?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,331 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

Balls aint in it mate. No I haven't tried to install 2.0. Don't see the point as yet. early days for the pwnage software and installer isn't compatible. In any case downgrading looks simple enough. If only I had those problems. :)

No I have itunes 7.6 running the 1.1.4 restore image bundle. Tried it in DFU mode and recovery mode. I even purposely zapped the baseband just to see if I could downgrade the baseband. Made no diff. Looks mechanical at this stage.

If iTunes can still recognise it in recovery / DFU mode, then I wouldn't give up hope Wibbs.

Did you try performing a clean upgrade to the official 2.0 firmware? Then running Pwnage and install the custom 2.0 firmware it produces? If that doesn't work, try and restoring all the way back to 1.1.2 / 1.1.3. I'd recommend trying the upgrade to 2.0 anyways.

Like I said, I definitely wouldn't give up hope.

That's not an accident Gary.. you're supposed to install the official v2.0 firmware first before building the custom 2.0 firmware in Pwnage AFAIK.

It's not gonna hurt at this stage to attempt the upgrade. Better to give this a shot as Pwnage will attempt to reflash the baseband and everything on restore of their firmware. Might be worth having a fresh shot at it!

Oh I'm the very picture of hope over expectation at this stage. :D

Yep itunes can see it and will install. Takes a few tries to get it into recovery mode. DFU mode is a crap shoot TBH.

As I say I haven't gone the 2.0 route yet, mainly because quite a few have borked their phones in the process. Now I could go and downgrade it afterwards. It just seems so twitchy now.

Basically I can restore. That's all good. I then get the non official sim bit. All good. I then unlock it. Doesn't appear to matter which utility I use. It restarts, all good so far. Wifi is inactive. If I look for the wifi(any wifi) it can't find it. Then it gets fierce unstable. At that point if I try to switch off wifi it locks up, restarts and then goes all the way to the world picture and then locks. It's not fully locked though as I can see the phone in various utilities.

Now I do see where you're coming from, but I have reflashed the baseband with boot neuter. I have even zapped it completely using iDemocracy, so on restart it tells me it needs repair as no bootloader baseband version found. Then into pwnage(for 1.1.4) and reflash it with a virgin baseband.

I do reckon as iLiberty won't work for me now that some part of the ramisk process is borked. Apparently one of the (many) major issues with ziphone. It works by force upgrading the bootloader. A well dodgy thing to do. Apple themselves don't do that with their updates as they consider it too bloody dangerous.

Fúck it I'm gonna try to upgrade it to 2.0. Maybe, just maybe that may reflash the bootloader/baseband maybe even with a fix. Who knows?

If iTunes can see it, I'd say there's still hope somewhere yet.

DFU Mode is a pain but if you follow instructions to the detail, you'll get it on the 2nd or 3rd attempts. Instructions are:

    1. Power off your iPhone
    2. Plug your iPhone in via USB
    2. Press and hold Home and the Power button (up top) together for EXACTLY 10 seconds.. and don't estimate, count out loud.
    3. When you reach 10, take your finger off the Power button but keep the Home button held for another 5 - 10 seconds. You'll hear iTunes beep and recognise it.

You'll know you're in DFU Mode if there was absolutely nothing on screen during this. Like I said, follow that to the exact detail and you'll get it on the 2nd or 3rd attempt.

Didn't see any examples of people borking their phone.. some got errors launching Pwnage on their Macs, others got error messages restoring the custom firmware. But nothing present that could be fixed with a restore to 1.1.3 or 1.1.4.

Yeah, sounds like there's a few issues alright but might have been a utility in Installer that cause problems at some stage (e.g Kate) but then again, they presumably wouldn't be present in a fresh restore. But could be permissions issues on folders or anything.

    That's the spirit!

The upgrade to 2.0 might not fix any issues but it's worth a shot. The new version of BootNeuter bundled with the custom firmware might fix something that's not quite right.

Oh.. and another thing, some of the problems I had yesterday may have been due to an iffy restore of data in iTunes so try out the device before re-syncing any of your data. And just see how it behaves!

Let us know how you get on.

Jebus it takes a while. It went OK but then told me I need to activate and the sim isn't recognised. I checked all the right stuff, but I'll try it again. Didn't stack itself yet anyway.....

Yep, does take a while alright. The 'Preparing iPhone for restore' and the creation of the firmware in Pwnage takes the most time.

Just to be clear: make sure to upgrade to a fresh version of 2.0 first. Then use Pwnage (and provide it the same firmware that you used to restore) to make the custom one. Make sure you get the prompts right too as that'll alter the content of the ISPW it makes, and may not make it possible to convert.

OK got it load and jailbreak/actvate/unlock. So far so good. Didnt stack immediately on start. Was even able to switch off wireless. It saw the network but I a bit twitchy about joining it..... :o

I think I need a stiff drink first....

Went very smoothly I must say though. Restored old settings too

    Thanks again for the help

One thing; when I start itunes it says new updates for your carrier are available. I suspect cancel is in order there? PS it didn't change my bootlader settings only the baseband. I'm on 3.9. What do ya reckon to going to 4.6? More stable or does it just lock down the phone more?

ya you gotta love those non brick phones! Reckon baseband is the only difference! Dunno why it didn't do that automatically? I also want to make a custom boot logo before I get settled!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,331 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

I reckon with mine it's either the bootloader is corrupted or the comms board is fugged. Bloody Ziphone. Can't really see a fix at the moment. I've wiped/restored/zapped baseband etc well over 10 times. Now it's just aphone with a touch screen. Lack of wifi is a pain.

    Thanks cdebru.

One question though, once the steps are completed in that guide, it says, "Here's the first screen you'll see. There's the App Store, and Cydia. No Installer yet... "

So, how would you get the installer? Or have I missed something?

Wibbs: Shame to see it didn't all work out but at least you've a functioning phone but lack of WiFi is a shame alright.

Installer isn't yet compatible with the 2.0 firmware. The next release (Installer 4.0) will be released "soon-ish" according to the developers.

    From the RIP Dev Blog:
As you surely know by now, Pwnage Tool 2.0 is out. And for now, it has no Installer 4.0 in it.

This is because we have decided to not release an undertested product into the wild - we don’t want any mess on the phone this time. So Installer 4.0 will come out soon… as soon as we’re confident it functions properly, we will release it - and trust us, we are not going to delay it for a long time.

Meanwhile, all of the popular tools that can’t get to App Store for various reasons will have to be redone for firmware 2.0 - mostly because the inner workings of the system (in large, the way user interface works) have changed a lot since 1.1.x, so it will take some time for the authors to update and test their stuff. We expect the Installer to be ready by the time there’s something to offer you.

Yeah the sensible move at the minute is probably to wait till everything is ironed out

even when installer is out it may take a while (if ever) for some apps to be updated to 2.0

So if you think you can not do without a particular app it would probably be a good idea to wait till it is updated.

    Yep.. spot on cdebru.

Not a whole lotta point in upgrading just yet if you've an app you always use or you'd miss. But to be honest, there was nothing in my apps list from Installer that I'd really miss (well, maybe iFlickr).

Apps like Shazam, VNCLite and Remote are worth the upgrade to the AppStore alone though.

It has connected once, but wasn't stable. This does suggest along with the lack of restarts and freezing like with 1.1.4 that it is software/firmware. At least partially.
