    No clue mate.

Might be worth trying either restoring to your current firmware, or upgrading to firmware 2.0 and see if it fixes it.

Thanks basq. Think I'll hold off upgrading to 2.0 till I'm more confident in doing it. It does the job at the moment for her.

Thanks for all your help basq.!!!

No worries stephen.. but upgrading to 2.0 is an absolute breeze to be honest!

OT: Apple have really outdone themselves in the AppStore games - spent forty minutes playing Texas Hold Em today. Excellent stuff!

My biggest pet peeve with firmware 2.0 is this 'Backing up iPhone' when you do a sync in iPhone. Takes fecking ages.. typically 3 or 4 minutes on mine anyways.

Assume there's a way to switch it off but would like a backup of my phone close to hand anyways.

Makes no difference really. It's easy to upgrade (or rollback if needs be).

No official apps are available for anything under firmware 2.0 (as in you need firmware 2.0 to download from AppStore). But on the flip-side, there's no Installer available for firmware 2.0 as of yet (but should be available shortly) so there's a distinct lack of 3rd party apps for firmware 2.0 (besides a Quake port, Pacman port etc).

Not specifically.. but it's worth mentioning there is still no way to currently unlock 3G iPhones so if you do buy one, you'll essentially have a nice fancy iPod Touch until that is addressed (and it's inevitable).

so if you were me (as you seem to know your stuff! ;))would you just look for an unlocked 1st gen in good nick with firmware 2.0 and wait for installers (which will eventully come)??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,203 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Yeah, that's probably what I'd to alright.

But if you can get a 3G iPhone in good nick, buy that either as there'll be a way to activate it fairly shortly I'd imagine.

How long did it take from launch for the 1st gen iPhone to be software unlocked?

From a quick Google, I reckon the first software unlock was released for the 1st gen iPhone around mid September last year, and the iPhone was released on June 29th last year (in the US).

So roughly two and a half months.

Anyone know the Edge settings for Vodafone?

Also a decent guide on how to set up SSH and all that jazz on the iPhone would be helpful too, I noticed the Edge settings aren't in my Network settings so AFAIK you have to do it that way now...

Install OpenSSH (it's a package in Cydia), and then follow the instructions here. Except obviously you're not disabling EDGE (like I was), you want to ensure the correct settings are entered.

could someone tell me, with the 3g iphone out, how much are old unlocked 2g iphones going for? Did their price dropped much when the new one came out?

Whatcha mean it's the only one you can get around here? That's a beta release if you do have it (only released to developers as far as I know). I read the beta version has been unlocked by the iPhoneDev team but they're no need to release the unlocking tool as the version hasn't been made public.

2.0 has been linked to numerous times in the thread.. and when it doubt, Google it - thats what it's there for.

Someone mentioned here that the price of the 2G iPhone actually shot up on the 3G release on Adverts... unsure of why exactly!

From a quick look on Adverts now, you should be able to get €300 - €350 for it anyways if it's good nick and all.

I'd be on the other end of the transaction :D

Thats strange, what were they going for before it's release?

I have an unlocked iPhone thats been upgraded to 2.0 and recently moved to O2 with work though not on the iphone contract.

Since it was a work phone I thought happy days, and could finally use edge without it being really espensive. But edge has disappeared from my Settings so I can't put in the GPRS settings!!!! I have Edge turned on in Boss Pref but the little E isn't even appearing on the screen

It's a 3G Sim card - is this the problem? And is there a way around it?

Edge settings aren't available with an O2 3g sim card. It should just connect when you open Safari. Or at least mine does when I use my work O2 sim.
Maybe get a new sim from an O2 shop.

ok, i just picked up a almost new 1gen 16gb iphone with FW 2.0.
thing is it hasnt been activated or unlocked yet.....
so after a google search i came across this http://news.metaparadigma.de/?p=347

which seems quite a long and potentially compicated process for a mewbie like me :o

im sure there are links in this massive thread but with almost 400 pages in it id be looking here for a while!!

so does anyone have any quick links or sites that have the activating & unlocking software which are simple & straight forward that i could use??
or maybe id be better off just paying someone out here $30 to do it for me??

oh & when its done can i just put in my normal 02 PAYG sim while im out here in the states??

    thanks.................

Long and complicated is right.. but fortunately for you, that's an out-dated guide. Basically, the tool (Pwnage) to unlock, activate and jailbreak the 2.0 firmware was initially released for the Mac OS only. But people found a method of tweaking it so it would unlock a 2.0 firmware iPhone on Windows.

But since then, they have released WinPwn which is a much easier and less complicated method of unlocking, activating and jailbreaking your phone on the Windows OS.

Step by step instructions here, and a video detailing the step-by-step process here! If you've any problems, let us know!

Stick the €30 in the post for me! :D;)

Yep, it'll be fine to use regardless of if you're roaming or not.

I upgraded my iphone to 2.0 last night without any issues, except that it now won't let me into the Settings -> Mail.Contacts, Calendars setting. It freezes, screen goes black and then back to to front screen with all the icons.

Anybody encountered this before? I'm thinking of restoring to see if that fixes it.

Try a restore but don't sync the backup of your calendars (uncheck it in iTunes).

I re-did the restore, and then decided to set it up as a new iphone rather than a restore of my old one. This solved the problem nicely. It means I need to re-enter some settings, but no big deal.

Yeah, that's where most issues are occuring in the sync of your pre 2.0 data.

You can probably uncheck the Mail accounts and Calendar events in the sync and it'll be fine.

I was going to upgrade my 1.1.3 1st gen iphone tonight but someone was telling me that if you have upgraded using ziphone(I went from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3) that winpwn method will brick your iphone, any truth to this

    No, quite the opposite.

Assuming WinPwn goes through the same process as Pwnage, it should reflash the baseband that ZiPhone downgraded.

Don't think so.. the Mac version (Pwnage) seems more stable from what I've read of WinPwn.

    Just an quick update:

Firmware 2.01 is now available which most notably fixes the slow typing of SMS messages and the slow backup times in iTunes. But it DOES NOT work with Pwnage yet.. they will be releasing a version shortly which will allow you to upgrade though.

And also a beta version of Installer 4.0 (that is compatible with 2.0) is also available. Instructions on where to download, and how to install it below:
    1. Available via download here and here.

    2. Extract zip file.

    3. SSH the Installer.app folder into your /Applications folder.

    4. Run this command via terminal: chmod -R 777 /Applications/Installer.app

    5. Also Run this command via terminal: chmod a+srx /Applications/Installer.app/Installer

    6. Turn off your iPhone or iPod Touch and turn it back on.
    Good luck!
