At the request of one of our regular posters here, I'm creating this thread for any people out there who are actively trying for a baby, are thinking about it in the not too distant future, those who are having trouble trying to conceive or anyone who is considering assisted reproduction techniques (IVF, ICSI, IUI, sperm or egg donation etc).

I wanted this seperate from the Pregnancy thread as they are two very seperate voyages on the parenting journey, and for those who are having trouble getting pregnant it can be very taxing reading through many, many posts about pregnancy, new babies etc.

I also realise that there are people out there who won't want to log in with their own usernames - ttc is a very personal journey and for those experiencing problems the notion that they may be identifiable on the internet even through usernames may stop them from coming here and looking for advice/information/support. Please don't think you can't post here - we're here to listen and try to support you all.

Just to finally say : this is not a medical board, so please do not come onto this thread to ask for diagnoses or questions only your GP or OB/GYN can answer. Anyone offering unsolicited medical "diagnoses" will be banned from this forum. We are all here to offer advice, information, support and share our experiences, but we can't tell you why you aren't conceiving or what you should do next.

Great thread Embee

I am ttc at the moment.. I suffered a miscarraige last June and it was a very traumatic experience for me altogether.. I have two kids already, So I know I can carry a child and conceive. But I am still going to be extremely nervous this time round..

hi

we're ttc no1
we've been trying 15 months since on ectopic pregnancy .
we've done 2 iui's one with clomid ,i'm on my second clomid round and iui no3 should be sunday but we'll know for sure after my scan on thursday evening.
i went through a though a hard time a couple weeks back finding it hard to keep going ,we had a break cycle from meds and iui.
but now i'm back and ready to go again with renewed optimism i do have age on my side [im in my 20s].

so that all i think i've gone on too much already ,i was actually waiting for a thread like this to open up.

I think this is a well needed thread.

I have been trying for nearly a year now and am begining to get a liitle upset that it hasn't happened yet although logically I know I could be doing alot more to be helping the situation ie loosing weight eating more healthy food etc. I have arranged to get a fertility test done knowing that it is very lightly that I may not be ovulating and as I understand it there are a few things that can be done if that is the case.

Trying to have a baby is very scary journey. You spend so long avoiding getting pregnant and then whe you do try you expect it to happen immediatly (the first month of trying I was so excited and was upset when it didn't happen). You then cop on to the fact that it might take awhile and relax hoping that nature will take its coarse but each month seams to fly by and nothing has happened. I know it takes an average of 6-12 mths but I am tired of waiting

My sister has invited us up to dinner tonight and I have high suspisions that she is about to announce her own pregnancy, which is brilliant however I can't help but feel very jealous and I hope that I will be able to hide it when she does tell us. I honestly don't know how people that have been trying for years or know that they can concieve can hear other peoples good news without getting very down themselves.

I think it is important to stay positive and focused during times like these well done.., My friend conceived her son with Clomid, after two miscarraiges. I hope the scan goes well and that Sunday will be d day..

Hi CC,
I think the fertility test maybe the way to go at the moment, Diet and lifestyle can effect your fertility as well.... I am getting myself into a routine at the moment, (In training) Healthy eating, Exercises and clear and positive thoughts..

Best of luck with your dinner tonight, I know it is difficult to hear other peoples news.. But try and stay focused and positive.

hi Quality

sorry to see no-one wrote back to you earlier
no one opk is really better than the other ,i used ovulation predicitor kits for 12 months and i've tried boots,clearblue,first response and internet ordered dip strip ones .
if i had to recommend any if your splashing out i'd go first response ,but otherwise the cheap internet ones work absolutely fine never had a problem with them.

i'm in the 2ww now after iui no3 ,4 days left til testing but i'm not hopeful ,its like every month i just have a feeling it didnt happen and i've never been wrong before ,but i guess there always a chance, if not on to the next cycle.

ps always use ovulation test in the 10am-8pm time range ,some of the well known brands say test at any time but its not correct as lh surges only start in the morning and i think morning positives are usually from the surge from the day before so you'd have less time til ovulation than you think.

girls check out www.medicaltestcentre.ie great irish online store for hpts, ovulation, fertility tests, preseed etc. it guarentees next day delivery and accepts laser.

Hi, a great idea to have a separate thread for this!

I've been trying to conceive for 6 months now. I've just started using OVP kits that I bought on Ebay. They seem to work, although they indicate ovulation on about day 16 for a 26-28 day cycle, I would have thought this was too late?? Who knows, we decided to try every two days between day 10-20 anyway.

Anyone else feeling frustrated by the monthly disappointment??
Also, is it just me or when you're ttc does every woman you meet seem to become pregnant?

Asta thanks for your lovely advice last week, sorry, I didnt reply last week but I had just found out that I am now pregnant, So wasnt sure what to write, I am only 6 weeks 3 days, and after my miscarraige last June at 8 weeks 4 days, I am a nervous wreck. Just want to wish you all the very best of luck.

I hope you get some good news soon. Lets hope to a happy healthy 2008 for us.!!

You can sing that.. I've had at least 4 good friends who are pregnant in the last few months. I've been off the pill since oct/nov. I bought the Ovulation kit off ebay the dip stick one and a load of early pregnancy tests (patience is not one of my virtues). I try not to get disspointed when I get the negatives but its hard. I have only really been trying hard the last 2 months but I just don't get that if you have intercourse everyday around the time you are ovulating why it doesn't happen. Silly me thought it was that cut and dry! I know if I was trying to avoid it i'd get caught!! This is a great thread by the way...

glad you didnt need the ovulation tests and i hope everything goes well with a worry free pregnancy.

to the others the monthly disappointment seems to get harder each time
i've now had 3 unsuccesful iui's taking a break from them now.
we just have to hope and trust our times will come

Hi all!

Im new to boards, and just wanted to say this is a great thread! Myself and the other half have just started ttc. Im so excited, but nervous at the same time - I had an ectopic pregnancy almost 6 years ago, and have been on the pill ever since. Doc says it can take 12-18 months of trying but im so impatient!!!!! (I am only off the pill one month......) Its nice to hear there are others out there feeling like I am also.

I'm kind of new here, my husband and I have just moved to Dublin, and we have been TTC for the last 4 years. We know we need IVF, as I have bad PCOS, and I wondered if anyone here could recommend a place/doctor in Dublin that has a good reputation for it. We have already been through all the tests & Co. before we moved, we really just need to start up the process here...

Hi all my sister and her husband have been trying for two and a half years now, were very close and i know how heartbroken she is every time she,s let down. She has severe Endemetriosis, she tried Clomid for a while to no avail she suffers excruitiating periods and they only got worse. She had a large cyst removed from her ovary in January which helped regulate her cycle from 35 days to 30 and reduce her period pain. She has just done her second IUI wh ich hasn,t worked she got a serious infection from the procedure, she has decided to have a break and has a appointment in July to start IVF so i,ll be praying for her until then i then she is really due some luck. over the last few months I usually get a positive on the ovulation dip sticks i bought online.. this usually happens on a tuesday. on most occaisons we have done the dance on monday night but just because of the way things have worked out recently one or the other of us have been away on the tues and wed night. loking forward it might be like that for the next month or 2, so my question is, how likely is it that i will have any luck, if i get the positive on a tuesday, does that mean i am ovulating at that time or that i will be in the next 36 hours. i've been trying for the last 6 months but realistically prob have ever managed to be at home together once on the day after I got the positive!! I know some of you say we should be trying harder but so much has happened unexpectedly recently.. thanks in advance. i'm getting disheartened.

ag1975: the ovulations sticks measure an LH surge as your body prepares to ovulate. This surge is normally detectable 12 - 36 hours before ovulation actually happens, so really, if you want to maximise your chances of conception, you guys should be trying to do the dance from the time of your positive test onwards.

It's possible the sperm could survive from the Monday, if all the conditions were right physiologically, but you'd probably have better odds DTD from the Tuesday onwards.

Bear in mind, though, that a positive ovulation test does not guarantee that ovulation will actually occur - some women (particularly if they have an excess of oestrogen) can have many LH surges, without actually popping an egg, so it might be a good idea to start monitoring your other fertile signs, or to get the doctor to confirm you are ovulating with some bloods if you're particularly anxious about getting pregnant quickly.

Has anyone gone to the chinese/herbal shops and tried anything for fertility? There is one i pass by most days, which has a big sign in the window, but not sure if i am wasting my money. Been trying for a year now with no luck. Can the doctor prescribe Clomid or do you have to go to a specialist?

A friend of mine had some accupunture for fertility problems, she got pregnant during the time of the treatment, Might help?

Just got my periods back last week after chemo, was over the moon about it as I was told that there was a 50% chance that they would not come back on my particular chemo. Not allowed to get pregnant yet but planning for next year. My mum was able to plan us so hopefully we will be as lucky.

That is wonderful news.... I suppose you never really think that someone would be happy to get their periods, but in your case I am sure it was a celebration:D!

Can I ask you why the doctor wont allow you to start trying yet?

You are right, I never though I would be delighted to have my periods back as they were so painful but I cried when I found it. It was the day before my husbands birthday so no sex for him that weekend but we were both over the moon.

The doctors do not want us to try for a baby yet for three reasons - 1) You are supposed to wait 2 years after receiving chemo as it is toxic 2) The cancer has the highest chance of coming back within two years and 3) The surgery that I had was very tough so my body would not be able to cope yet.

I love your signature by the way and have been watching your progress - well done.

Re the ticker... Thanks a million, I have finally started to relax and enjoy my pregnancy now. I havent taken it for granted for one second this time round.

Being honest, we are both broody as anything and cant wait to have our own child. Up until 2 weeks ago we were talking about starting adoption proceedings next February, though we still want to adopt. I so want a child who is as good looking as my husband was when he was a baby. Sorry, you can not begin to imagine how happy I was last weekend, even though I was in agony! To be able to look at babies and plan your own baby is one of the most amazing things possible.

I know this is a relatively old post, but just to let you know, I too had an ectopic pregnancy (lost a fallopian tube) and tried for years. I finally gave up, and bingo, then it happened. The very best of luck to you, because that all it is - luck.

never thought someone would bring my post up after this long,
just was checking to see what new posts there was.
Well i'm still trying [sort of] at the time of that post i did my 3rd iui ,then i've been on a break from meds, doctors ,the lot, for the last four months and i relaxed a lot about this whole trying thing .
Won't be doing anything except normal trying for the next few months as well.
Nice to hear a success story hopefully i'll have a success story of my own sooner or later.

I had really given up, I had decided to concentrate on my life as opposed to a babies. I know the night I got pregnant, I was rip-roaring drunk and taking antibiotics and a steroid inhaler. :eek: If I had thought there was any possible chance of getting pregnant I obviously wouldn't have wanted it to be in those circumstances. But it happened, and I thank my lucky stars everyday.

Hi all. great forum. we been trying for about a year or so. It is a bit dissapointing every month but trying not to get too upset. Just come to the conclusion that if its going to happen it will and there is no point stressing about it. I just checked out the medicaltestcentre.ie site. The bulk packs seem very cheap. Anyone used them?? And as another poster said about the ovulation test, the best time to use them is between 10 am and 8pm which i found out after spending a small fortune on first response tests and moved onto the boots own brand ones. Been taking my temp every morning also but there seems to be no pattern at all each month with that. My sleeping pattern is not great anyway so I guess thats why.
We'll keep plodding on:)
