At the request of one of our regular posters here, I'm creating this thread for any people out there who are actively trying for a baby, are thinking about it in the not too distant future, those who are having trouble trying to conceive or anyone who is considering assisted reproduction techniques (IVF, ICSI, IUI, sperm or egg donation etc).

I wanted this seperate from the Pregnancy thread as they are two very seperate voyages on the parenting journey, and for those who are having trouble getting pregnant it can be very taxing reading through many, many posts about pregnancy, new babies etc.

I also realise that there are people out there who won't want to log in with their own usernames - ttc is a very personal journey and for those experiencing problems the notion that they may be identifiable on the internet even through usernames may stop them from coming here and looking for advice/information/support. Please don't think you can't post here - we're here to listen and try to support you all.

Just to finally say : this is not a medical board, so please do not come onto this thread to ask for diagnoses or questions only your GP or OB/GYN can answer. Anyone offering unsolicited medical "diagnoses" will be banned from this forum. We are all here to offer advice, information, support and share our experiences, but we can't tell you why you aren't conceiving or what you should do next.

Hi there Quality .. yes I've heard acupuncture is good. Maybe I"ll try that on my next cycle.

Actually my doctor arranged for me to go and have a hystero-salpingography (HSG) this morning - to declog your fallopian tubes (if necess). Anyway, did that (which is absolutely excruciating pain - but only for about 5 mins) and the doctor said that I did have some mucous blockage and it's all clear now! Maybe it was from the D&C I had in Jan?

Anyway, fingers crossed for next month as maybe my fallopian tubes are fee and ready for some action!!!

Hi all
Myself and my husband have been trying for 2 years now. Last Sept 2007, we went to a fertility expert and we took femera and a hcg trigger and low and behold ... we got preggers!! Howerver, in Jan 2008, I had a miscarriage which was very traumatic! The Dr told me to wait for 2 months before trying again. Anyway, we tried again with a cycle of femara and it did not work. Tried a second time with femara and I am due my period any day. Have to say ... I don't think I am pregnant as I don't feel any symptoms at all (i.e. had very heavy breasts when I pregnant in Dec/Jan) so looks like it's not going to happen again. I really didn't think I'd have to go down the route of IVF. Not sure what to do now!!!!?? Any suggestions out there???

Hi all, although im a bloke i would like to offer some advice that may be of use. It may be contrary to some of the comments here already but hopefully some of it may be of use to some people.

Despite what we are told in schools, it is as many of you know, a very difficult thing to do when couples are actually planning it. although there are books and books on the topic, when trying it really comes down to doing a few things.

Age plays a big part in fertility. Depending on what age you are will depend on how long a couple will need to be trying before a doctor will provide "next step" assistance

Re diet, health etc. Having a healthy lifestyle does help but its not the be all and end all. Its ok to have a drink while trying as long it is within moderation. Binges can affect a man big time and will reduce his potency for 2-3 days following a session.

The trying bit. It is recommended to try every 2-3 days throughout the woman's cycle. (a guy needs some time for supplies to replenish to a good level) Even when not ovulating couples should be trying. to be honest, all an ovulation kit is really good for is to tell you that you do ovulate. Its not reliable for telling you the exact moment you should try as to guarantee conception. Bare in mind that it can also takes a varying number of days from making love to the point of conception. Using the kits as an indicator as when to try for a baby, can end up you not trying at other times of the month.

Stress plays a massive part on the whole event. Many couples after months of trying start to see trying as a chore and it can become a stress and worry, therefore impacting couples ability to conceive. The act of trying for a baby should be fun!

Hi all. great forum. we been trying for about a year or so. It is a bit dissapointing every month but trying not to get too upset. Just come to the conclusion that if its going to happen it will and there is no point stressing about it. I just checked out the medicaltestcentre.ie site. The bulk packs seem very cheap. Anyone used them?? And as another poster said about the ovulation test, the best time to use them is between 10 am and 8pm which i found out after spending a small fortune on first response tests and moved onto the boots own brand ones. Been taking my temp every morning also but there seems to be no pattern at all each month with that. My sleeping pattern is not great anyway so I guess thats why.
We'll keep plodding on:)

I had really given up, I had decided to concentrate on my life as opposed to a babies. I know the night I got pregnant, I was rip-roaring drunk and taking antibiotics and a steroid inhaler. :eek: If I had thought there was any possible chance of getting pregnant I obviously wouldn't have wanted it to be in those circumstances. But it happened, and I thank my lucky stars everyday.

just was checking to see what new posts there was.
Well i'm still trying [sort of] at the time of that post i did my 3rd iui ,then i've been on a break from meds, doctors ,the lot, for the last four months and i relaxed a lot about this whole trying thing .
Won't be doing anything except normal trying for the next few months as well.
Nice to hear a success story hopefully i'll have a success story of my own sooner or later.

Being honest, we are both broody as anything and cant wait to have our own child. Up until 2 weeks ago we were talking about starting adoption proceedings next February, though we still want to adopt. I so want a child who is as good looking as my husband was when he was a baby. Sorry, you can not begin to imagine how happy I was last weekend, even though I was in agony! To be able to look at babies and plan your own baby is one of the most amazing things possible.

You are right, I never though I would be delighted to have my periods back as they were so painful but I cried when I found it. It was the day before my husbands birthday so no sex for him that weekend but we were both over the moon.

The doctors do not want us to try for a baby yet for three reasons - 1) You are supposed to wait 2 years after receiving chemo as it is toxic 2) The cancer has the highest chance of coming back within two years and 3) The surgery that I had was very tough so my body would not be able to cope yet.

Can I ask you why the doctor wont allow you to start trying yet?

Just got my periods back last week after chemo, was over the moon about it as I was told that there was a 50% chance that they would not come back on my particular chemo. Not allowed to get pregnant yet but planning for next year. My mum was able to plan us so hopefully we will be as lucky.

ag1975: the ovulations sticks measure an LH surge as your body prepares to ovulate. This surge is normally detectable 12 - 36 hours before ovulation actually happens, so really, if you want to maximise your chances of conception, you guys should be trying to do the dance from the time of your positive test onwards.

It's possible the sperm could survive from the Monday, if all the conditions were right physiologically, but you'd probably have better odds DTD from the Tuesday onwards.

Bear in mind, though, that a positive ovulation test does not guarantee that ovulation will actually occur - some women (particularly if they have an excess of oestrogen) can have many LH surges, without actually popping an egg, so it might be a good idea to start monitoring your other fertile signs, or to get the doctor to confirm you are ovulating with some bloods if you're particularly anxious about getting pregnant quickly.

over the last few months I usually get a positive on the ovulation dip sticks i bought online.. this usually happens on a tuesday. on most occaisons we have done the dance on monday night but just because of the way things have worked out recently one or the other of us have been away on the tues and wed night. loking forward it might be like that for the next month or 2, so my question is, how likely is it that i will have any luck, if i get the positive on a tuesday, does that mean i am ovulating at that time or that i will be in the next 36 hours. i've been trying for the last 6 months but realistically prob have ever managed to be at home together once on the day after I got the positive!! I know some of you say we should be trying harder but so much has happened unexpectedly recently.. thanks in advance. i'm getting disheartened.

Hi all my sister and her husband have been trying for two and a half years now, were very close and i know how heartbroken she is every time she,s let down. She has severe Endemetriosis, she tried Clomid for a while to no avail she suffers excruitiating periods and they only got worse. She had a large cyst removed from her ovary in January which helped regulate her cycle from 35 days to 30 and reduce her period pain. She has just done her second IUI wh ich hasn,t worked she got a serious infection from the procedure, she has decided to have a break and has a appointment in July to start IVF so i,ll be praying for her until then i then she is really due some luck. Im new to boards, and just wanted to say this is a great thread! Myself and the other half have just started ttc. Im so excited, but nervous at the same time - I had an ectopic pregnancy almost 6 years ago, and have been on the pill ever since. Doc says it can take 12-18 months of trying but im so impatient!!!!! (I am only off the pill one month......) Its nice to hear there are others out there feeling like I am also.

to the others the monthly disappointment seems to get harder each time
i've now had 3 unsuccesful iui's taking a break from them now.
we just have to hope and trust our times will come

You can sing that.. I've had at least 4 good friends who are pregnant in the last few months. I've been off the pill since oct/nov. I bought the Ovulation kit off ebay the dip stick one and a load of early pregnancy tests (patience is not one of my virtues). I try not to get disspointed when I get the negatives but its hard. I have only really been trying hard the last 2 months but I just don't get that if you have intercourse everyday around the time you are ovulating why it doesn't happen. Silly me thought it was that cut and dry! I know if I was trying to avoid it i'd get caught!! This is a great thread by the way...

I've been trying to conceive for 6 months now. I've just started using OVP kits that I bought on Ebay. They seem to work, although they indicate ovulation on about day 16 for a 26-28 day cycle, I would have thought this was too late?? Who knows, we decided to try every two days between day 10-20 anyway.

Anyone else feeling frustrated by the monthly disappointment??
Also, is it just me or when you're ttc does every woman you meet seem to become pregnant?
