I have tried the installing the international option in the general menu and setting it to Ireland but caller ID is still not working but it does display the number correctly in the contacts list.

What's the problem everyone is having with the caller ID? All I did was add two entries in my address book (synched from my Mac) for each contact and it works fine. What I mean is that each contact has two numbers added, the international form (for texts/roaming) and local form as in:

    +353 87 123 4567
    087 123 4567

And caller ID works fine whether it's an incoming call, text message or outgoing call... A bit messy, but it seems like an easy workaround.

Oh right, cause replacing system files on the phone itself is such a nice and "clean" solution huh?... I was just posting what works for me, nothing more.

Well, yes it is. You do it once and you don't have to do it again.

Anyway, only 3 hours until UK release. I'll be ordering one tonight! :D

For me, the whole point of getting to 1.1.1 was to get the TV out feature which simply does not exist in 1.0.2. . .

does this mean you can watch vids etc from it by plugging it into a tv somehow? I've tried googling for this feature but did not see anything on it?
    Cheers

Yes, it does. There's a component TV out cable for the new iPods that works with the iPhone but you need to be on firmware 1.1.1 to enable the function on the iPhone itself, 1.0.2 did not have it. I think the composite cable works too (component would only be found on HDTVs mostly).

    Here we go, composite:

    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/irl.woa/91264041/wa/PSLID?mco=4D79909E&fnode=home/shop_ipod/ipod_accessories/cables_docks&nplm=MB129&wosid=vX2ojzr2UaQd29ZbX8l1s35EcMy

    and component:

    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/irl.woa/91264041/wa/PSLID?mco=228360E7&fnode=home/shop_ipod/ipod_accessories/cables_docks&nplm=MB128&wosid=vX2ojzr2UaQd29ZbX8l1s35EcMy

The TV out feature is pretty standard on most video iPods, though it's only the current generation that offers a component connection too. Just make sure you don't get the old composite video cable somewhere (the one that connects to the headphone out, instead of the dock connector) as this one does not work with any of the new iPods/iPhone.

I called them and they told me there is nothing to set up for you to access edge/gprs, with the right settings it should just work. Of course, she didn't know any settings

And those mentioned above dont work for me :(

Only your network operator can enable it for you, also you will probably need to select a data tarrif

i have started to unlock my new i phone,
i got as far as step 10 of unlocktheiphone for mac and am stuck.
every other step went great connected to my home network first time got the ip address off my i phone and proceded to enter it into the pre 1.1.1 upgrade window, entered the pass word "dottie" and clicked ok stated up i-tunes, it synced up with my phone, but it failed and the same happened with "alpine" . i tunes is asking for me to upgrade to 1.1.1 but is it risky without the pre 1.1.1 upgrade.

    anyone got any advice

hi everyone - i've read through the posts, but you know how info changes from day to day. Im on O2 bill pay at the moment (Ireland), and want an iPhone for as cheaply as possible. Obviously I also want to put my current O2 sim in it. I heard that I can buy from the US, UK or France or wait till Q1 '08 - whats the best bet if I want to get out of this for less than €350 ??? - thanks

Your best bet is to wait a week or two until the UK iPhone is unlocked and then drive up North (if you have the means to do so) and get one in the Carphone Warehouse up there and unlock it yourself. That will cost £269 which is €383.31, that is the cheapest solution.

cool - thanks nikimere ! - If is do this, is there a way of getting out of taking the 18 month O2 subscription because surely this isn't the same as Irish O2 ???

You go into the Carphone Wareouse and you pay for the phone, you don't sign any contract.
The phone and contract is activated through the iPhone whenever your in the comfort of your own home. So all you need to do is hack the activation. Look here: http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/gettingstarted/activation.html It is a video of how the activation is "supposed" to work. Obviously we'll have to hack this official activation process.

There have been plenty of easy to follow tutorials on the net for this in the US with the US iPhones. We just need to wait until the UK version is unlocked and there are similar tutorials.
Once the UK phone is unlocked i will post a link to a tutorial here.

i believe the 3 Network is the only one worldwide to not work with the iPhone... i saw this somewhere, cant remember where. Maybe someone here can shed more light on this? (i think it may be something to do with 3 not having an EDGE network....)

Cheers, ye i thought that myself. My cousin is looking to buy it from me. Will tell him to change network and keep his number. Prob the safest bet

Did anybody read the article in todays irish times (weekend review) about the iphone? The journalist seemed to have gotten some official word as she said at the end that we will "have to wait until spring" to get one. The poster "unlockthatiphone" said this about a week back and claimed an official apple source for his info so i think he was right.

Yes, The Three Sim card wont work on iphone, Three Mobile use different tech with regards there sim cards i think thats the reason so three mobile wont work in iphone, i have tested this with both uk and irish sim.And as niki said going up north/uk is the best bet, the iphone has already been jailbroken but the method of doing so its not user friendly as of yet but its not to far off, still no word with regards iphonesimfree app weather or not it actually locks the phone but i am sure we will find that out before soon. But saying that if you buy one in uk you can downgrade to version 1.1.1 easy enough. so no excuss's go buy one.

Considering the time frame from when it was anounced O2 UK had the agreement with Apple to the actual launch date, that wasn't exactly cutting edge journalism, was it?

Either way, at the end of the day it's just a phone, people are getting way to excited.

Umm, where exactly did i claim it was "cutting edge journalism"?

    Also it hasn't been announced officially whether ireland is even getting it yet so i don't know what you mean;
"Considering the time frame from when it was anounced O2 UK had the agreement with Apple to the actual launch date"

No irish operator has an agreement yet but obviously it's most likely to be o2 since vodafone don't have an edge network.

Ring Meteor and ask them to enable Internet Access. You have GPRS and MMS enabled by default, not Internet Access. It works fine for me with the settings I gave you.

    I found a handy tip from the portable media players forum where there was a thread on US ipods. If you got an iphone from the US with the american charger just read the following quote;

"Here's a tip for when you need to plug in the charger if it's the one with the US-type pins that fold out - if you know what I mean Just slide off the bit with the pins - it should come off easily enough - and you'll see a regular figure of 8 type socket. You can then just plug in a regular cable from some other Irish appliance that has this connector - I use the one from my laptop Dead handy."

I'm happy now as i can use my camera or laptop charger to charge my iphone now, I thought i'd have to buy the official apple adapter.

Right. This is doing my head in.

iTunes will only let me sync to my iPhone. Now, I have over 8 gigs of music so I can either create playlists for everything and sync those, or randomly select 8 gigs from 16.

From what I've read, there should be a checkbox in the syncing options allowing me to manually drag stuff over. That's not there. I've googled and it says it should be but it's not. Any ideas? I'm using a 1.1.1 iPhone, and the latest version of iTunes.

I'm assuming it due to being a Irish iTunes store, with an US phone.
