The Sextant already up to about the eighth floor. It’s rising around two floors a day

Love these drone vids. Sounds like the core of the Sextant site building will top out pretty quickly. One continuous pour? Cripes. 😲

I was down around there Saturday evening

Shocked at how fast the Sextant has gone up. They seem to be working 24/7??

I was also shocked at the apartments down at PUC also, flying up.

The Marina was fabulous in the Spring sun, great to see so many people of all ages using it, it would be great to improve connectivity from the city centre to the Marina and from Tivoli via a footbridge across to the Marina.

My wife remarked there is so much building happening around the city now, a real boom!

    • Sextant
    • PUC apartments
    • CMP Dairies
    • Vita Cortex site looks cleared
    • KRR site is cleared for new building

    Plenty more I have missed!

Walked past the new aprtments near PUC yesterday

Some of the brickwork looked like it had been done by a 3 year old😮

They are working 24/7, correct! They started around last Wednesday and it has been a continuous pour since then. It is gaining 2-3 floors a day, and is over half done now.

22 with maybe 2 under the green. Definitely topping out in the morning, if not already topped out now

    https://www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news/watch-tallest-building-ireland-taking-33681543

I just assumed the Obel tower in Belfast would remain as the tallest because its 27 floors versus 25 for the Railyard building …

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 830 ✭✭✭PixelCrafter

    Obel is 85m

    Railyard is 85.5m

Not a lot in it, but it's taller.

As far as I am aware, the Cork one has more going on in the lower floors, which are that bit higher, even though the floor count is 2 less.

Beamish Counting House is due to become the new central library for Cork!

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-41843181.html

Not gonna lie, this is the best possible outcome in my eyes. The building is there, it’s brand new, huge and effectively an empty canvas. And putting the library there will bring some much needed activity into that part of South Main Street!

Just do yourselves a favour and don’t check the Facebook comments under the articles. The ones most in need of a library’s services seem to be the ones least receptive to them 🤯

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Ah, that's fantastic news. The library badly needed new space, and great to see the counting house being put to public use.

That's literally the tenor of some of those comments 😤

Permanent move or just while the do up the existing city library?

Permanent. The Counting House will be the new library, with vastly improved facilities. The current building will be repurposed, though the exact nature of that new purpose is as of yet unclear.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

So it will be next to the Event centre. Hopefully, not the same timelime

The new library will be the old library by the time they build the event center.

Like the 30 year old New Dunnes in Bishopstown

Seems like a staggering amount of money ,

Just a few years ago you could have built an event centre for that amount of money .. 🤔😉

If they can have the )ont Neuf in paris - built in 1607, I'm sure we're allowed to have the new dunnes at Bandon road ..😂

Well it is a state-of-the-art office building that is already kitted out with HVAC, lifts, electrical, and all the other stuff you'd expect. That was never going to be cheap. It's still a whole lot cheaper than a new build.

Also, whilst some changes will need to be made to create special climate-controlled areas for the reference section to house historic books, manuscripts, etc., and the glass facades will likely need to be modified to prevent UV bleaching of books, those changes should be comparatively minor. It won't be overnight, I'd say we're looking at 2-3 years until the new library opens, but it's a hell of a lot faster than having to find a sight, acquire it, decide on the architectural features, get planning permission and deal with the inevitable backlash and get it built, which would probably take upwards of five, possibly up to ten years.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Look , it's the right type of building,( as in a landmark building) in the right location, as you said its already built,

But 35 million sounds a hell of a lot , well it is a lot , - but that doesn't mean its not a good deal..

However 2 or 3 year to move in sounds insane..

I know. The plans have gotta go through public consultation first though, this being a public project. So that's gonna have an effect on the timescale, and not in a good way. To be frank with you, any large public project of that scale that starts now and opens before 2030 is a major win in my book.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Work driving on for the 25 floor Railway Yard apartments. Looks like they're almost on the 4th level steel construction now.

It'll be Irelands tallest residential building fairly briefly according to this: https://www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news/dublin-take-irelands-tallest-building-33829397

    Oh well …
