The whole far left agenda is dying out, in sports, politics, media etc . If commonsense returned to boards it might stand a chance. I called leader of Israel Benny, and got banned, for hurting his feelings, as if he saw it, and what's wrong with Benny. It's bonkers on here.

I’d say some of the CA mods would have a heart attack if they saw the kind of stuff people were posting on AH in 2009.

I think if posters think boards is a bastion of far left speech then they always go to twitter/x or truthsocial. Looking at the immigration or trans threads I see a lot more right wing than left wing posts.

The DIY forums have been fairly phuqqing useless in recent years due to cliqueyness and mod-backed conservativism

You always get someone trying to scare you into not taking on some DIY project because these forums are filled with professionals who feel like they are losing out if you do the job yourself.

They'll happily tell you to get RGI, plumber, tiler, mechanic for the simplest or things and vouch for the most outrageous quotes people get from tradesmen

The mods also come down hard on you if you call out the fear mongering. Especially the plumbing forum

You were banned because this place is full of pro-FG shills who jump with delight when they see their property tax bill coming in. Pack of phuqqing apes the lot of them. I will not be sorry to see boards.ie gone

It's makes you appreciate how good we had it before social media arrived and totally toxified online discussion forums.

I was site banned from reddit for a post in which I estimated how many palestinians would die based on UN estimates from previous Israeli reactions. There was nothing derogatory or any aimed digs about the post, it was a simple dry estimate based on past UN published stats, but I guess the estimate was too shocking to accept but we're well past that estimate now and starvation as a weapon has no doubt broadened the stats.

My point is online forums as we knew them seem to only work now for niche interests where users behave so as to not lose access to their special interest, but even there users can act territorially.

If Boards went I think that would be the end of this type of online ecosphere for me. But as is I'm spending less time now the internet and more catching up on a pile of books I've amassed over decades.

Oh not politics.ie. Gave up on that years ago as it was just party loyalists angrily screaming at each other.

Same with Reddit except there it is all bots attacking anyone who isn't pro Sinn Fein. In particular the Irishpolitics section moderators hand out bans to anyone who dares question any Sinn Fein policy.

    Boards will be missed.

You could be banned for similar reason here. This was never a bastion of free speech either and the admins didnt even pretend

Was tinkering with the idea of creating something. I always wanted a boards type site that allowed visitors to filter threads for gold/silver/bronze users, where bronze users are those with fewer than 300 posts, silver is 300 to 3000 posts, and gold is greater than 3000 posts.

Say in the Important News sticky, I'd love to filter that thread for all the gold users to see what the veterans think. Same with some of the busier threads. Not saying that the bronze users have nothing interesting to say but it would filter out a lot of back and forth with re-reg accounts/trolls, and by in large those that have been posting regularly here over long time periods aren't out to waste people's time.

I've signed up to a swingers forum, hopefully I'll have more success on there looking for the ride.

Nowhere. There are no forums like Boards.ie that I would even remotely be interested in. Facebook is no place for discussions. Reddit is a dump (in general, sometimes there are good bits).

I participate in Discord/specialty forums, but that's not the same.

I've been temp banned here a few times for calling out obvious trolls and shyte posters who seemed to enjoy special protection on the site, so again another reason to acknowledge it was never perfect. But for a few decades these kind of online forums were a new frontier for the curious and generally there was more collaborative discovery and sharing than entrenched opining.

Back in the noughties I came across a NZ website called Trademe which had a discussion forum like Boards, but you could only post with one account authenticated with a NZ or OZ bank card. As users first went there to buy and sell the fora side of the site seemed to mostly self moderate as abuses would result in users being suspended or banned from the whole site, so no more buying or selling.

Anyhow with the rise of social media FB and other discussion forums like reddit supporting the fora side of the site was no longer financially justifiable for the company. Unfortunately as with nearly everywhere this allowed the global social media companies to profit off social division via the like of Cambridge Analytics etc..

What I'm musing towards is that if Boards went I still think there's demand for general online discussion fora where users can pose a question. Perhaps some sort of subscription service as proposed may actually work as users will be less likely to post frivolously and avoid personal attacks.

It will never be as much fun as the frontier days, but some form of online jurisdictional accountability would be a absolute salve after the horrid years of social media exploitation.

    Whatever happened to P45.net?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74,628 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

FFS, was wracking my brain trying to remember the name of that site.
The site I thought would end the world when it closed…now I can't even remember what it was called. 😗

Same thing will happen if boards.ie goes.

Internet ephemera like Bebo and MySpace, they come and go and the world keeps turning.

You can find pages on the Wayback Machine. Mad! 😁

Havnt really been on Reddit, is it bit more US content?

Anyone know where a bargains alert replacement would be, has saved m3 a packet over the years with various discount codes etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,017 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

It has regional threads or sub reddits such as r/ireland but anything politics or news related is dominated by American users.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,311 ✭✭✭CollyFlower

I use this site, https://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/ it a UK site and it has a fair few Irish members.

There are some very interesting threads on boards one as mentioned it Fergils boat but also the guy rebuilding VW cars and many others.

I hope they archive this stuff if the site stops working and it can still be seen.

The mods drove away users who are 20-25+ years on site and could write more than a single sentence coherently and argue in faith instead of resorting to constant whatabouteries

instead giving a free run of the place to russian shills and bots

    RIP boards.ie, dug own grave

Allowing totally unsubstantiated scutter spam threads as is happening right now on the Ukraine invasion thread really does show theyve given up.

I'll be using Chat Gpt to code me a new site called

    Planks.ie

I'll populate it with a load of AI bots with a ratio of:

    2% serious and informed

    10% decent honest and helpful

    38% messers

10% experts in extremely niche topics that never post anything else

    20% insane conspiracy theorists

    20% opinionated arseholes

I'll then lock myself indoors and never come out

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"
