If Boards.ie closed tomorrow, where would you go?

Given today’s news, thought I’d pose the question.

I do like the discussion forum format for things like EV motors forum and food and BBQ threads -probably less so for current affairs but that’s probably more to do with the nature of the topic under discussion and likelihood of serious disagreements and what not.

What would you miss if boards went and more importantly where would you go to get your discussion fix?

I’d probably look at Reddit for current affairs and look for a few specialist forums for things like food/BBQ etc as I still enjoy this quite old fashioned way of interacting with other posters

I'm not sure, I use facebook for my running pictures, race information and sh*tposting/finding funny jokes and other then that I don't use any instragram, twitter etc.

Boards is more of a discussion site rather then a traditional social media so I'm not really aware of any other discussion sites which are like boards.

I suppose politics.ie and peoplesrepublicofcork.com/forums would be the closest two currently existing in Ireland?

They'd probably be the closest two that I'm aware of. Backroads is another one that is still quite active, mainly motoring related with sections for hobbies and so on but they generally don't welcome broad ranging political/current affairs type discussions (understandably).

Askaboutmoney is another example of a long running site that is still quite active, good for financial advice.

Thepropertypin was a good website years back around the time of the economic crash, but they've gone totally far right due to the bizarre obsessions of the site owner, it's embarassing.

I’m not using any other online forums these days so my guess is nothing…. Watch more telly, more gaming, probably or join my local topless darts team …

Shame if boards did close and I mean that genuinely, let’s hope not….it’s an excellent resource in the main... Not without issues but overall the positive tends to outweigh the negatives…

Peoples republic of cark is like the Wild West - Politics similar - I’m wondering if you closed down much of the site and concentrated on just highly active forums might the whole thing be viable and be cheaper or is there a standard fee regardless?

We set up a Discord server for all the arcade and retro folks. We've had an active little community going there for what must be 20 years at this point. Would have been absolutely awful to lose.

I like boards. Have been a fairly long time user and usually have bookmarked the bargain alerts threads, travel to France, golf and GAA.

I've got a lot of value from this site in fairness, from simple things like how to use a VPN or downloading YouTube music from Argentina, India, Turkey and other exotic places to what type of CCTV cameras to buy and cheap electricity prices.

I've gotten rid of FB, Twitter etc so the only thing I flick in and out of is boards and a few podcasts.

Like a few others on here however, I'll probably get a few more jobs done, or even take the dog out for a walk on these fine sunny evenings instead of typing away on this with Shelbourne on in the background 🤔

Boards usually complements things I do in the real world be it watching something on the tv or cycling. Also a source of knowledge or advice in numerous areas.
