I stopped using this site many years ago, but remember having some great times and laughs in AH. It was great fun.

The specialist forums would be impossible to replace IMO.

There are plenty of DIY, electrical, plumbing forums, discussions but 99.9% of them are American centric which is useless for getting help on Irish specific regulations, fittings, etc...

Is there a “we’re all fcked and we’re all gonna die” forum? If so, maybe we should walk single file to there? 😀

I don't think I'll be going anywhere else. I have an account on Digital Spy but don't really use it much. I also don't like Reddit's system.

I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I don't use boards much but the arcade and retro is the area I have the most. Is it open to another member?

I'm banned that often on Current Affairs i'd hardly notice. Always limed the football forums though and would miss reading those. I joined the BBC Football which allows me comment there.

Doubt it if the database can't even handle the traffic 😂

Surely boards.ie is of cultural and societal benefit and should be getting funding from the arts council or maybe a cut of fines from social media.

    🙈🙉🙊

How would we even go about that ? Do you think any politicians would support it ? ;)

To be fair its more balanced than a lot of other sites .

Maybe the National Library, the National Archives or a similar body might be interested in preserving it as read-only, were it to be closed.

Jayse, preserved as a relic , a sobering thought !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,723 ✭✭✭JeffKenna

Funding it as a cultural relic might make sense, it is a slice of Irish internet history, for better and worse. But pouring public money in to keep the same broken setup going, with mods silencing people and no accountability, would be a joke.

I'd happily survive without it. Tbh it's hardly adding anything to life the last while.

Where woukd i go - nowhere. I just pootle around the odd news sites until I get bored and put the phone away. I tried Reddit.

Failed To find anything worth keeping my interest. Very samey posts over and over. Felt what was left of my brain cells were dying slowly.

I'm one of the old school who love newspaper. And will stick with them to the bitter end😀

Learned all kinds of useful information on boards over the years, great info about accommodation, gardening, cooking, building regs, politics, employment stuff, vat and customs for online shopping after Brexit and so much more. Hopefully it will continue, impossible to replace imo.

I'd probably spend more time on Reddit but it's just not as good for certain things, like the perennial threads here. On Reddit threads (posts) disappear after a certain time no matter how popular or if new comments are added.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,268 ✭✭✭✭How Soon Is Now

Only use this place ever had was that it was easier to talk about local Irish issues and topics but lets face it that has basically died since the changes to the site. The Irish side of Reddit is just as bad as this place at its worst I wouldn't even waste my time posting in it as its so one sided you will be downvoted to oblivion if you don't agree with the majority. There's also a huge amount of younger more progressive off with the fairy's type on there so **** that!

Might need to get one or two more bans in for old times sake before the place shuts its doors. Knowing this place ill have the job done before lunch! 😂

I'd probably use AAM, Backroads and "grotesque unbelievable bizarre unprecedented" if it were to get more traction. As far as I know, mention of this tiny site was censored here and may still be. That shows a serious level of insecurity and immaturity on the part of boards.

I find Facebook, X, Reddit etc. useless for both everyday stuff and niche/hobby stuff. Boards, even with its many problems, can still be great if you limit or avoid altogether usage of certain forums. CA and a few others.

Moderation: leaving aside the CA stuff, how many times on this site have we seen moderators closing or deleting "stupid" threads. Often seemingly in response to other posters piling in on the thread starter. That's another issue with boards - there are a considerable number of posters on here 24/7 who rarely/never start a thread yet they are In Like Flynn to attack the OP which sets the tone. Other see this and decide not to start a thread. If posters don't start threads, what happens to the site?

Scouting Ireland had a very useful forum on it's previous members area website but this was lost to progress. There is a Scouting forum here but it has never caught on unfortunately.

I'm regular on a few chats here but I don't think there is anything to replace it.

Yeah, boat restoration, found a safe were top reads. Ship porn was great but quiet now. Always check out the funnies.

It's not the place here for suggestions, but could we clean out some the stickyed post. Sometimes you have to scroll through a screen of them to get to first recent post.

AAM is the only similar site I have in favorites so I would probably get some more work done.

Already mostly gone to reddit as the moderators here are on a power trip

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 78,778 Mod ✭✭✭✭New Home

    AAM: Askaboutmoney.com

GUBU is no longer a censored word, AFAIK.

Backroads: Do you mean backroads.ie(motoring site) or a different one, e.g. the travel site?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,403 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

I'd assume to the post boards coke and hooker thunderdome gala scheduled for 24 hours after the site dies

    I'd echo Reddit.

Their app is good. Their user face is complete dogdirt but if you know what you're looking for Reddit is brilliant.

Reddit is fun to waste time on but it's terrible for discussions as unpopular opinions are downvoted to hell. There's no back and forth visible. Even large subreddits like world news can be easily brigaded. The moderation is pretty inconsistent there too.
