    Drove people away?

You're only on this site in the last year, suddenly extremely active in the last day. Renewed contract?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,201 ✭✭✭Trigger Happy

If boards closed tomorrow I would have an average of 30 seconds extra per day to click on something else. More redit scrolling probably.

You're very well versed in Z bullet points.

It's a sad way to be.

It’s called X 😀 Elon bet you to it

But on a serious note Reddit somehow manages to deal with all the obvious scutter while rewarding and floating to top thoughtful and or funny or interesting posts

I had zero run ins with moderation in 12 years of Reddit yet here it’s like arguing with bricks

Right now I’m blocked from CA for pointing out bots doing bot things, and they don’t even try to hide it anymore and are **** brazen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,795 ✭✭✭✭Ha Long Bay

    You are not blocked anymore.

    FROM 10/07/2025

All forum bans in CA, except permanent bans, are now lifted and moderation will be limited only to anything illegal, abusive/threatening behaviour or matters before the courts.

I used to think Reddit was pretty good, but they are prickly about any criticism of Israel, especially in the worldnews fora.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,341 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

Yeh true that, depends on sub, r/Ireland is the 180 degree opposite on that subject, there are echo chambers like r/Conservative and r/Politics which are often hilarious

One thing I learned since Reddit has such a wider global audience is how quaint our first world problems usually sound

Looks the somebody has finally realised their actions have consequences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,158 ✭✭✭yagan

Yeah, I used to think it was alright but I was site banned for posting something on a global forum about genocide in Gaza that is actually commonly uttered by Irish elected representatives.

I wouldn't have minded a forum ban but site ban very much paints reddit as part of the problem.

Im sure Boards has hundreds of subforums which are never used, or have next to no replies or new topics?

Could these not be thinned out to make the site a lot easier to maintain and cheaper to run?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 708 ✭✭✭BaywatchHQ

Reddit NEET's sub. I self banned from incels.is because of anti Irish sentiment. Unfortunately some incel sites are full of extremists rather than a place for loner men.

It would be more podcasts for me

Agree some of the local Reddit threads for a county or town can be good. But yea the politics stuff is dire. The international politics sections are cess pools of far right and far left fighting. Even on the group r/Irishpolitics it seems to be run by Sinn Fein. I posted something critical of Mary Lou McDonald and her handling of the cases of the Maria Cahill and the lad convicted of sexual abuse who got a reference from them. And I got several threatening direct messages. When I reported it to the mods I got banned. So that taught me that on Reddit anyone can set up a sub Reddit claiming to be one thing and then turn it into something completely different.

Maybe a local men's shed. Most posters are of an appropriate age and it would facilitate experience/advice exchange, unnecessary political arguments, and a chance for in-person social interaction.

I thought **** would have developed over time as a viable alternative to Boards, especially after the Vanilla 'upgrade'.

It certainly has a nice platform anyway. It's fast and has most of the functionality Boards once had.

If it was a bit more active and more regulars from here were to join, I think it would be the best alternative to Boards.

I joined from the start but to be honest it's pretty dormant most of the time so I only visit there infrequently.

Reddit? I wouldn't even bother. I have an account there but rarely bother with it.

(Edit) I see the G.U.B.U. url is still prohibited here. How petty is that?

No idea. I like boards.ie because it's very easy to navigate and find the topics you're interested in. Like everything when you are familiar with something and like it, none of us are very comfortable with change.

Someone mentioned people's republic of cork, but imagine how insufferable they'll become if they win the all ireland?! 😂

Not like they don't have a high opinion of themselves anyway

Boards would be very much missed by so many - the specialist forums in particular are simply irreplaceable.

I would miss Boards - Reddit is nowhere near as good in terms of the quality of discussion and dissenting views. I've been on Boards for nearly 21 years now.

I took out a one year subscription to support the future of Boards.ie - €50 per annum is very reasonable IMO for the service. 👍

Anyone know what happens if boards.ie doesn't survive, do you get your €50 back?

If that worries you, you can do the monthly subscription instead.

I'll really miss the Toyshow thread tbh. Those very specific cultural threads that have the unique Irish humour will be sorely missed.

The weather threads are epic when a major event comes along

I check in on GUBU from time to time, and yes it is dormant, but that's a bit of a chicken and egg thing, if all of us who have a look there and decide it is too quiet, instead joined a made a post it would be pretty lively very soon!

Totally agree the continued censorship of the site URL is insanely petty. Perhaps using capitals works:

    ****

Yeah the Gigs and Events forum is as good as any music press or information and its better, because its the punters, the folk into the music that is reviewing it and encouraging others. I think its an excellent forum for spotlighting music festivals and in some ways Ireland's version of the Efestivals Forum.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

If there is demand, there will always be supply. The market always decides.

Boards was mortally wounded 3 years ago, realistically, and has been living on the respirator of a veterans hospital since that time.

The modding has been appalling since the Vanilla disaster, and has no doubt tipped the balance away from the site recovering, towards its death throes.

I've enjoyed different fora for about 17 years now, but where will I go? Probably nowhere. If theres some other outlet for things I'm interested in, I'll find it, otherwise its peace out and do something else with my leisure time.

Are Russian bots banned on the subscription version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 Declan05

Well it would have to be Boards and a few more sites being closed, then I'd probably go on a lot more walks and spend more time in the kitchen or living room instead of in front of a PC in my bedroom.

but the reality is, markets work by all sorts of manipulative entities and factors, from both the public and private domains, so markets dont really always decide!

Before the update a regular Late Late thread would have hundreds of posts, more posts I reckon than the announcement thread asking for 2k subs to keep the lights on. The user count just fell off a cliff post update.
