I was listening to wimbledon earlier in the week and they were talking about umpires and they said that they never leave the chair during the match not even for a toilet break. Don't know how they do that.

Djokovic making short work of Evans. Rybakina 3- up on Sakkari after 17 minutes.

Moutet just hit a ridiculous backwards tweener lob winner against Dimitrov.

Caty McNally has just won the first set against Swiatek 7-5, having been 4-1 down. This is not to Iga's liking at all.

Another seed in bother Swiatek a set down, fun match with McNally

Draper down a set and a break....

Swiatek looking a lot better 3-0 up in the third

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,930 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper now down two sets....Cilic serving and playing well...but Draper has been poor, barely got him moving at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 816 ✭✭✭klr87

Cilic is almost a pensioner in tennis terms, Draper really ought to be doing a lot better.

So Iga got through, and will play Danielle Collins next. That should be fiery.

Signs of life from Draper much more aggressive! Breaks in the third set!

Cilic given a warning for taking too long to serve, rightly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,930 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Cilic is wiley, but I agree he is 36, Draper far more aggressive and breaks in the third.

Swiatek really powered through by looks of it in the end.

Draper takes third 6-1. Much better. Cilic levels definitely dropped a bit, but Draper making him move which is helping!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,930 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper just about hangs on to his serve! 4-4 in the 4th set this is so tense!

Draper gone! Cilic played well but that was there for Draper....

Bye bye Jack. And Dan, and Katie. Not many left now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,930 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Yeah lot gone.

On the women's side Raducanu has Sabalenka yikes.

Kartal winnable looking one against Parry.

Norrie only one left in the men's side? Bellucci again winnable.

I think the UK press might have been slightly carried away by so many players making it through the first round....

Listening to the BBC with Claire Balding, John Mcenroe etc the other day all the male players might as well have gone home as Draper had it in the bag. Oops!

I can't say I've seen a whole lot of Jack Draper but I've no idea how he is number 4 in the world. Maybe I just see him when he seems to lose, but I just don't see it.

In any case, there is a bit of chasm between Sinner, Alcaraz, Djokovic and the rest.

Sabalenka vs Raducanu is the last match on Centre Court tomorrow evening, clearly meant for prime-time Friday evening viewing. If it goes badly for Raducanu, it might be post-watershed (9pm) viewing. There are two men's matches first, and it's possible either or both might be long.

This seems mad,.in the Ben Shelton match they stopped it at 930pm with him serving for the match...bringing them back out to likely play one game?!

That is always going to happen when Wimbledon comes round, especially that Andrew Castle. I do have to laugh that they think British have some advantage at Wimbledon because it's grass, they seem to forget the grass part of the season is just a couple of weeks, 3 to 4 weeks at most and the players only play on grass at this time of year like most of the other players. You swear the way they talk about the grass that all the british players have been brought up playing on it when most likely they have been brought up mainly playing on artificial surfaces or clay. It's not like clay where most of the courts in Europe have clay and the players are brought up on clay and its the same for hard courts.

Onto today's matches, I am not holding out much hope for Raducanu against Sabalenka, I think Sabalenka just has too much power that Raducanu won't be able to cope with. I would love for Raducanu to win, it would be a huge scalp for her but just can't see it. The Fritz/Fokina match has the potential to be a 5 setter something I think Fritz will want to avoid after playing 2 5 set matches already. Alcaraz should come through his match as well and he will be hoping to avoid another long match.

Court one I think Kartel will come through unless playing on one of the show courts gets to her, Norrie/Belucci has the look of a 5 setter about it, I think Norrie might just shade it based on his experience more than anything, Svitolina should see of Bencic. Court 2 seems to have the better matched, Osaka should come through, she could be a dark horse here, been on the outside quietly winning her matches and not much focus on her, Keys should win her match and the Jarry/Fonseca match could be exciting hard to pick a winner there.

did anyone watch Monfils play Fucsovics last night? I only switched over to it in the 4th set. Why was he doubling over between points and seeming to lean on things like he needed to take a breather? He looked absolutey knackered or maybe he had a fall or an injury was playing up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,162 ✭✭✭Floppybits

I am guessing this was Monfils, he always does that, I think its a tactic and part of his act, he loves to entertain the crowd. He was doing the same against Draper at the French Open, Draper said after the match that Monfils was a nightmare to play because he was messing with his head, that at the end Draper said his head was a mess.

I agree, plus Andrew Castle is abysmal.

Andrew Cotter and Todd Woodbridge were very good in any matches I watched this year.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Would love to see Djokovic win this year given it’s his 20th year playing Wimbledon - so far so good - whether that was real tummy trouble on Tuesday or an excuse to take a short break - the latter I’d say- there’s no issue with him in his match yesterday - completely outgunned Dan Evans- although it probably won’t get any easier than that from here on in

Ah here , random crap brits have huge wins every year over high ranked opponents cos of the grass. They very much have an advantage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,385 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Is there that much grass court tennis played in the UK though? Their climate is a bit better than here but you'd think still not really suitable for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

There isn't a huge amount to be honest however it is infinitely more than any other country. The home players results every year are more spectacular ranking wise than any other grand slam. Southern England where most of their tennis is played the climate is a good bit better than here.

I wouldn't put that down to being specialists on grass though, it is a number of things like the structures that the LTA have brought in around coaching and bringing players on rather than it being on grass. Also the British players are playing at home which helps being surrounded by home comforts and then there is fact that a lot of home players get the wild cards, the same as we see at the Australian, French and US Opens. The players when interviewed have even said that being at home helps them.
