    8th seed Rune out

Alcaraz's side of the draw was a bit light already but it's now lost two of its top 10 seeds and I count three more outside of that.

Fognini up a break in 4th set, good match this one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭VillaMad

If Alcaraz is not careful, he could well join them the way it's going. He hasn't played anyway close to his normal standards.

Fognini a break up in the 4th.

Alcaraz clearly gave up towards the end of that set.

It also looks as if the Zverev match will have to be moved from CC this evening.

    Alcaraz v Fognini into a 5th set!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,844 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

You would think Alcaraz will take this from 3-0 up but it has been tough Fognini at 38?! Has been inspired at times, but a lot of unforced errors from Alcaraz, 4+ hour match in his legs now too! Delay seemingly issue with someone in crowd.

This is a long break, and the schedule is already a mess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Alcaraz has finally taken charge of the match.

Just seen this year along with it being the first year without line umpires, that for both men and women's finals, the doubles finals will be on before them meaning that both won't start until 4pm on the Saturday and Sunday.

The men's finals nowadays can go on so long (even with a tie-break at 6-6 in the final set) that it makes no sense to schedule another final after it. Also, with the roof and the lights, they can afford to start the men's final later, at a more TV-friendly time.

I remember the good old days when McEnroe ran way with the final in under 90 minutes (1983 and 1984), but nowadays even a straight-sets men's final can take about 3 hours.

Indeed. Usually as well when the singles final is over, the stadium empties as a lot leave afterwards and the doubles teams deserve a bigger crowd. Probably also suits the American TV stations more by it being a 11am start rather than 9am on the east coast.

Alcaraz just comes alive in the 5th set. Now 14-1 in 5 set matches.

Excellent first set for Katie Boulter against ninth seed Paula Badosa 6-2.

Badosa has been very poor so far.

Absolutely horrendous service game from Boulter...Badosa 3-1 up in the second…that could be huge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,844 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

And Barbosa finally breaks Boulter in the opening game of third set. She is absolutely infuriating, bags of talent but mentally can be so erratic. She had Barbosa on the ropes until a horrendous service game in the second set.

Boulter breaks back! I thought she had missed her chances on that service game. Very enjoyable battle!

    Berrettini gone in 5 sets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,844 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Boulter through 6-4 in third set that was topsy turvy but fun!

Finally, Zverev and Rinderknech start. Knowing Zverev, there's very little chance of this finishing by the 11pm curfew, but they should have time to spare tomorrow to complete the match.

You couldn't pay me to watch Fritz vs Mpetshi Perricard on Court #1. Two sets, two tie-breaks. Only two break points (both to Fritz), neither converted obviously. Mpetshi Perricard won both tie-breaks.

Taylor Fritz now two sets down to Mpetshi Perricard.

Not exactly a thriller but tight, let's just say dominated by serving.

Im watching it at the moment. I think it's a great match !

Each to their own then 😀. I'm streaming the Zverev match, but as the other match is on BBC 1, I'm keeping an eye on that as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭klr87

Ohhhh … Fritz has broken. About time someone did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭klr87

Wow. Fritz was 1-5 down in the 4th set TB, but won it 8-6. It looked as if he would lose the match without having faced a single break point. That might still happen though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭klr87

Bizarre. They've stopped play. There was probably just enough time to play the final set before the curfew, when there is always a few minutes leeway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭klr87

On Centre Court, Zverev has won the second set tie-break, so they walk off at one set all after two hours play. A typical pace for Zverev. This match probably has two to three hours to run tomorrow, and risks fouling up the schedule. They're not going to move the defending women's champion (Krejcikova), or Novak, or Coco. Nor will they bring the start time forward from 1:30pm. They also have to close the roof to complete this match and then open it again, but given the amount of time allowed between matches on Centre and No. 1 Courts, that mightn't be too much of a problem. It's been scheduled second (after Krejcikova, before Novak), which is standard practice.

Huge shock in the women's draw with 3rd seed, Jessica Pegula out in straight sets, only days after winning a grass court tournament in Bad Homburg in Germany.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭klr87

I couldn't believe that as I saw the live scores (just out of a meeting). Cocciaretto has played well in the warm-up events on grass, but she's still not even in the top 100. But then Pegula lost to Lois Boisson (world #361) at the French Open - although Boisson reach the semis. She also lost to a much lower ranked player (Danilovic) in the Australian Open.

Tatiana Maria, winner of Queens, is also out. She served for a straight-sets win against the wonderfully named Katie Volynets ("Volley Nets"), but eventually faded in the the third set, losing 3-6 7-6[4] 6-1. The heat is really getting to some players.

Sinner hardly broke sweat in beating Nardi in under 2 hours.

Krejcikova avoided the banana skin that was Alex Eala (who should have won Eastbourne on Saturday), but it took 3 sets.

Another big name out on the women's side, but no shock: Siniakova d. [5]Zheng Qinwen 7-5 4-6 6-1. Zheng is useless on grass, and Siniakova now leads her 3-0 on this surface, despite being obviously less than 100% healthy today.
