It's a bit weird to use the sales of an incredibly small region as proof of Tesla doing well. So far this year has been absolute disaster for them and there's no signs of that changing. And the blame appears to be on Musk.

I'm not saying Tesla is doing well, I'm saying that in an Irish context, and specifically in this community, sk8board's distaste for Tesla is misplaced. Evidence shows that Tesla is well regarded both here and in the wider country.

Elsewhere is largely irrelevant to a buyer here.

I don’t have a distaste for Tesla whatsoever - I think it’s an incredible business and indeed I owned a very early 2020 SR+ new at the time.

I simply think if you remove musk, Tesla is suddenly clean as a whistle again, and make the best value EV an Irish buyer could buy, in a base SR for €37k.

But they’re not going to remove him.

Saying things like ‘evidence shows’ is completely moot. Evidence also shows that 99 out of every 100 irish new car buyers in 2024 choose some other car brand. But no one cares.

Apologies, not you @sk8board, I crossed wires and meant to tag @SchrodingersCat who has expressed some pretty strong anti-Tesla sentiments lately. Also @cnocbui

Someone even suggested they wanted Tesla to go under. Chaps/ladies, the constant harping & grousing is getting really old.

I see Tesla shares how now recovered and are above where they were a year ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,885 ✭✭✭yagan

Saab went under, I'm sad about that but if a nazi saluting gimp like Musk drives Tesla to bankruptcy then it's not like there won't be other options for EV workers.

Some other EV company like BYD might buy out the factories, they already make buses in California.

And Tesla sales are down globally so you've more illustrated that their share price doesn't reflect how the brand is actually doing in terms of actually selling cars...

Why is it misplaced? By March, Tesla had sold 500 cars here, they're simply negligible numbers that don't show a lot. I also suspect Ireland is lagging behind simply because of right wheel drives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,583 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

It looks misplaced because the sentiment towards Tesla in this community and elsewhere in Ireland appears to be quietly buoyant. There is little to no identification between Irish buyers and Elon Musk's actions in another territory. The buying threads support the view.

Maybe we are just selfish, or maybe we are unconcerned with the actions of the CEO and general buying decisions in other countries.

What you say is a fact but a strong share price is so important if a company is to weather moments like this. Wouldn't it be an awful lot worse if the share price plummeted and kept going down rather then recover?

Does Tesla give out quarterly profits? How's it faring there?

For a start Nazi salutes or intimations of what's commonly known as the Roman salute can result in criminal convictions in several European countries, but not in Ireland as we weren't directly involved in that conflict.

However whenever the Brits claim anyone Irish as theirs we're pretty quick to speak up.

I just ordered a new Model Y and I'm wondering how it'll fare in Irish car parks. Begrudgery tends to run high in Ireland and in my experience new cars don't stay pristine for long. I've never made it past six months without a "stick it to the man with his fancy new car" obligatory ding.

Given the strong opinions people have about Tesla and Musk, I can’t help but wonder if this effect is going to be multiplied fivefold. Anyone with experience driving a Tesla here, have you noticed the car attracting any unwanted attention?

If I'm driving with my partner she'll say "ohhh look a tesla". I don't give a **** about cars so pay no attention but most people live outside the political bubble.

Hard to know what to make of Tesla sales here actually. Massive drop in April. But that was the same last year.

April is the start of a new quarter for Tesla. They've always tried to make sure sales occur before end of quarter you'll often see lower sales in the next month.

so much for Tesla being cleansed of all its problems if it changed its CEO (like every other company on the planet would do in this same situation).

It’s honestly hard to see much sales momentum coming from this announcement. I really can’t see it anyway, it feels like he’s toxic to pretty much all sides now, and does nothing to change that - he doubles down every single time.

edit: as it’s behind a paywall:

“Mr Musk (53) downplayed the extent of Tesla’s challenges, saying “it’s already turned around”.

When challenged on this – the carmaker’s vehicle sales continued to plunge across Europe’s biggest electric vehicle markets in April – Mr Musk said that the region is the company’s weakest, but that it’s strong everywhere else.

“Our sales are doing well at this point,” he said. “We don’t anticipate any meaningful sales shortfall.”

No surprises there, Tesla is screwed because of one man and his extreme ideology

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,141 ✭✭✭sk8board

Tesla isn’t screwed - they’re just going to sell far fewer cars than their CEO think they will.

He’s bored of selling cars anyway - he’s long since moved on to the vaporware projects

Main thing is any kind of prestige is gone for the brand plus anyone with any sense will know that promises for the brand in the future from Musk will be viewed as bs.

plenty of coverage about BYD overtaking them anyway!

    true.

Tesla has to vastly overdeliver now to be taken seriously. The Cybertruck is a great example of a massive promise to deliver something billed as the future of car design and manufacturing process.

You can buy a 2024 one on autotempest today, with no miles and the now obligatory $7k wrap, for $64k. And they still aren’t selling.

Thats a lot of vehicle for €56k, but 10,000 of newly produced ones are in Tesla car parks unsold ($800m of stock on the balance sheet).

A price cut is almost certain, especially now that they’re starting to accept them as trade-ins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 Duplex140

The Cybertruck is very niche. It's target audience would be preppers, people preparing for the apocalypse or an American civil war.

It should never have gone beyond a concept car. It was never going to be a big seller. It wouldn't even fit on most roads outside the US.

It's definitely a blip in the Tesla success story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 629 ✭✭✭poop emoji

I doubt that segment would want a car that falls apart before the apocalypse

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 Duplex140

Nevertheless they were the target audience. I don't know anything about them falling apart to be honest. I guess it depends what social media bubble you are in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,641 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

It's well documented. Accelerator pedal cover coming off and jamming the pedal down and trim panels falling off.

No need to be in a social media bubble.

There definitely a strong private security vibe off the pitch for the CT, probably aimed at those gated communities that are becoming more and more common in the USA. A non open flat bed keeping the flame thrower from getting lifted.

Looking at the sales figures from MarkN's post it really does look like whatever first mover advantage Tesla has well and truly been eclipsed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 Duplex140

I think its a bit dramatic to say its falling apart. They clearly have some issues with adhesive based on that article. Cars get recalled all the time, especially a brand new models and especially in the US where they pay what i call the early adopter tax.

I wouldnt see this as the main contributing factor in poor sales. It's clearly a very, very niche product that serves no purpose outside of prepper comunes in the US. It's literally a civilian armoured vehicle. It really is no shock at all that sales are poor.

That's not to take away from the fact that this is pretty much a failed product launch for Tesla.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,641 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

That was the eighth recall since launch. That's not normal and has clearly had an effect on sales. And that doesn't include the other issues such as rust spotting on the bodywork. Owners being warned not to wash their cars in the sunshine.

OK I'll take your word for it, its not something I've heard of.but then I haven't been actively looking for information on cybertrucks.

But I think you're missing my point. The vast majority of people will not consider a cybertruck because they do not need and have no interest in a civilian armoured vehicle.

After that, with the very, very small market who are interested, they might be put off by build quality issues you've mentioned.
