Have I got this correct? 800 quid for the console, 2 physical games, sd card and the pro controller (which is always mandatory unless you have tiny hands).

    image.png

Is there much onboard storage or is that SD card another mandatory? And only available to those invited to pre-order. My initial interest has dampened. 😂

This does seem to be accurate too, and based on data from 31/3 according to Eurogamer. Bummer, as I had promo emails turned off which seems to be one of the criteria.

NSO+ members will get some upgrades at no additional cost

Have they confirmed how much the switch 1 > to switch 2 upgrades for games like Zelda and the new Pokemon will cost ?

I assumed it would be around 10 like on ps5 but after seeing the physical prices I doubt it'll be that cheap

That's absolutely mad. They must really be low on available launch consoles.

€90 for Mario Kart World is £#@%©√π insane, plus I think it'll be kind of a live service game with continuous updates, making the physical cart fairly redundant. And here was me worrying about Switch 2 games costing €70. €90. €90!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,666 ✭✭✭Downlinz

It would be outrageous if they're charging more than €10 for an upgrade patch with some minor additional content.

256GB on board storage. Hard to say whether that'll be sufficient for the time being until we see install sizes…

No chance of a Nintendo store preorder so onto Amazon or a physical store for it.

Mario kart is steep at that price, surprised they have pitched it that high but for my lot it's a must buy on day 1.

I think the digital games playtime will let me down

I'd be fairly certain that I'd qualify to pre-order with Nintendo, but I honestly don't think I'll bother. Only thing at launch that would interest me is Mario Kart and that's not a system seller for me. The new Hyrule Warriors could be good but there's nothing else there that I haven't played elsewhere already.

Missed the whole thing no info in Smythd just now they're probably doing up their info over the next day or so I've Facebook messaged them to see. Gonna be an expensive experience but some of those games look epic

At those prices I'm definitely not day-1ing it - Metroid Prime 4 on my existing Switch will keep me happy for a while.

Pretty disappointing overall. Very expensive for what it is and a severe lack of exclusives, paid upgrades for existing games, all heavily padded out by lots of multiplatform games that will almost certainly run better on a cheaper PS5 that has a much more extensive catalogue of other games and lower game prices. And with so few new titles ready for the launch window, why in god's name is one of them a poor man's Mario Kart when they already have Mario Kart?

The Donkey Kong game looks like it could be interesting with the deformable terrain stuff but I'm not sure if that will get old fast or if they can keep it fresh. Mario Kart looks like more of the same. The wheelchair basketball game is lovely to see from the perspective of disability representation but it looks like it'll be painful to play, reminds me of the crap Microsoft pushed out for the Kinect back in the day. I hope the mouse gimmick dies off quickly and isn't shoe-horned into every other game, I suspect it will be forgotten about within a year given that 90% of the audience won't be playing at a desk.

The most exciting part for me was the addition of Gamecube to the online library, a lot of great content worth playing there. Excited about the new wavebird too. I always buy every console so I'll probably continue that tradition here, but I was hoping for some more exciting launch games than what they had on show.

How long before games cost €100.. Crazy money if you. think about it! I remember buying a PS4 brand new for €200 just a few years back..

This is still coming to retailers like Smyths at launch, right? It's not just the official Nintendo store?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,574 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Yes, almost certainly will be available through Smyths and online stores.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭tommythecat

How do Smyths typically do preorders? Do you go on a list or do you need to go to a physical store at a certain time?

Reminds me a bit of the 3DS launch. Wonder how long it'll be before they're announcing a Switch 2 Ambassador programme.

    Japan will have 2 versions
Switch 2 JP Only: 49,980 Yen
    Switch 2 Global: 69,980 Yen

Thought this was a bit strange having two versions in Japan at different prices.

I also thought they would have updated the UI in some way. Looks the same as Switch 1 basically.

For recent console launches it’s just been a case of ordering online when the preorders go live, and then collecting in person or having it delivered.

Just have to be on the ball as the preorder window for in demand items tends to be small…

I also remember paying £50 for Megadrive games back in the early 90s. 😁 (which I think is a little over €100 now with inflation/the currency change)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭quokula

In fairness it's less than games cost for the N64 when you adjust for inflation. And games cost so much more to develop these days. It's the reason there are so many layoffs in the industry and so many devs need to get creative with in game monetisation, special editions and live services to stay afloat. There's been talk in the industry about this happening for a while and there have been a lot of predictions that GTA6 would be the one to push the envelope, but it seems Nintendo have chosen to be the first to test the waters.

For a long time the growing player base compensated for the fact that the costs of development exploded while the cost to consumers stayed the same and / or grew a lot slower than inflation. However the size of the market has plateaued for quite a few years now while development costs have continued to rise so game prices inevitably need to rise to stay sustainable.

Well, that or development costs need to come down with smaller scale, lower fidelity games. Which is happening in the indie space and there are no shortage of options there so ultimately consumers can vote with their wallets.

Just watched the Duskbloods trailer again, missed the very end where it said 2026, I'll hold off until then.

I recall hearing the Switch game cards are pretty expensive to produce compared to other storage media (especially for the higher capacity version). I reckon upgrading that to a presumably even higher capacity version is what is pushing the physical cost over the edge.

    100/100 Direct for me.

Wow the hardware having 4K, HDR, 120hz I was not expecting. Docked, maybe, but not handheld.

Metroid Prime 4 having a 120fps mode is insane. Mario Kart World on launch day - killer! Donkey Kong looks amazing, so does the new Kirby Air Riders. I loved Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity so Age of Imprisonment is right up my alley. Gamecube on NSO finally - need to get a Gamecube controller.

The chat/camera is something I would use. About once a month I use Zoom to be on camera and play with family. Now we can do it natively on Switch 2.

Upgrades of Switch 1 games with some being no additional cost for NSO Expansion subscribers is nice.

The price of the console, given the specs, is reasonable. CAD$699 including Mario Kart is EUR450 which is cheaper than the native Euro price. Digital games being cheaper than physical works for me and with game sharing also coming the increase in price can be offset by borrowing a game from one of my family easily. Or GameShare for games that support it.

Now I'm even more excited for my hands-on experience in a few weeks because undoubtedly they will have Mario Kart World playable. Quality showing Nintendo.

I was always going to be on board regardless but the price is a fair bit more than I expected it to be. I'll probably go with the Mario Kart bundle as that seems the best offer and having Mario Kart (and Splatoon) in digital format is generally a good idea for jumping in quickly for online gaming.

I didn't see any mention of whether the original Switch controllers will work with Switch 2 but if so, I'll hold off buying the new Pro Controller for a while.

I was expecting a new 3d Mario but happy with how the new Donkey Kong looked instead.

Decent predictions by myself I must say.

Great direct MP4, MKW, DKB and Duskbloods(even though it's PvPvE) alone make it worth getting even if the pricing is a bit high.

Looks great apart from all the price increases. But I tend to only buy a few games a year so won't be too bad.

Do we know if the Switch 1 games need the paid upgrades to play or will they still work but lack graphic updates, etc.?
