If anyone is confused by the name 'Switch 2', then that's a failing of the education system, not Nintendo.

Obviously us enthusiasts and people with general gaming knowledge will have no problem. But ask some parents and grandparents to buy you son a switch or a game and they wouldn't have a clue whether to get the upgraded switch 1 or 2 version or which bundle etc etc.

It's called Switch 2 there will be no confusion that's it's a new console. Sony don't have an issue with PS4, PS5 etc.

The XBOX numbering system is all over the shop. Whatever about the Wii and Wii U, the Switch and Switch 2 is fairly standard. Like what else are they gonna call it?

Call it the 'Switch 2 - Which By The Way Means This Is A New Console, Not An Add-On To The Original Switch. We're Definitely Not Making The Same Mistake As The WiiU Again, Hoo-Boy!'

There was talk that the name of the Wii U confused a lot of people. Some assumed it was a peripheral for the Wii or a minor updated version. It didn't help that the Wii U looked exactly like a Wii when sitting beside the telly

Calling this the "Switch 2" follows in the footsteps of the PlayStation brand which is now in its 5th iteration and is arguably a very successful brand

For me, the Switch 2 is very clearly the next generation and will compete with the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X

Yea think that what Nintendo thinking make people switch to digital or physical kinda greedy move on there part.

It mean less choice for the customer the prices are ridiculously expensive.

I was going to make that joke.

Also, the box art for Switch 2 games is horrible. The thick Switch 2 banner ruins them. Just wait for the games that will also have the "download required" banner.

    first-look-at-switch-2-game-box-art-v0-k74tx2yvpfse1.jpg

And what a cheap and lazy way for Nintendo to put Switch games on Switch 2. It's not for the consumer though, the games are still full price. Ugly box art made even uglier by cheapness.

Oh ya, and don't read anything into the Yen price of anything(I seen someone say it converts to ~€7). We don't get those low prices over here. The Switch to Switch 2 upgrade packs will probably cost between €10 and €15.

Switch 2 Upgrade Packs may be priced around $10 to $15

Squish down the art for a big red banner on the top - that's some awful design.

They will need to be the Express standard, with the high read/write performance. Not extreme, not ultra, not any other buzz word. Express.

For example, Sandisk currently sells up to 256GB options so far. I think Lexar does up to 1TB currently but it's like €200 for that.

    https://shop.sandisk.com/en-ie/products/memory-cards/microsd-cards/sandisk-microsd-express-memory-card?sku=SDSQXFN-256G-GN4NN

The use of the new microSD standard is great in the long run for exponentially faster speeds compared to current SD speeds but it's going to f-over a lot of uninformed people I think and probably even have uninformed sales people in stores not realising they're selling the wrong card to someone.

It's probably the newest piece of tech the Switch is using tbh. I'd say unless you absolutely think you need one, hold out a while on these until more makers come out with them and juggle with the built-in space at the beginning.

At a glance they seem to be reasonably priced. Need to know what the average S2 game GB size is first to know which one to buy.

    Cyberpunk is 54gb on it.

    45e for 128gb

    75e-90e for 256gb

    116e for 1tb

    271e for 2tb

Not on Amazon ie funnily enough

Decided I’ll not bother pre ordering and just pick up on release day if available. Cant see it selling out although you never know. A bit mental that a Switch 2 + Mario Kart (physical copy) won’t be far off six hundred smackos.

It's expensive but if you drop all the bells and whistles, the console is €469.99 on it's own. That's not too bad.

I've zero interest in Mario Kart so have no problem paying that for a brand new bit of Nintendo tech. Would imagine the 256Gb internal memory will do fine for a bit too. Switch games are mostly 7Gb to 16Gb if I remember correctly.

I tend to agree with you - despite it being Switch 2 which is a pretty distinct next-gen upgrade to Nintendo fans and gamers, parents might not see it that way, leading to another potential Wii U situation on our hands.

The box packaging of the console itself is boringly similar to the existing Switch, except this time the joycons are black - “What, a new black version with a few new bells and whistles? The normal version and significantly cheaper version will be fine for little Johnny”. And having the big “2” next to the image of the joycons first, with “Nintendo Switch” smaller and underneath, is a questionable choice to me. “Oh, they’re emphasising the fact that it comes with 2 Joycons/controllers now, isn’t that nice. But it’s still a bit too dear, I’ll have that one with the white joycons please, thank you.”

    (apologies for the unrealistic dialogue)

I wonder if US tariffs will affect current price for US retailers/customers.

I assume that the Switch 2 is manufactured in China by some kind of Foxconn outfit.

If you’re getting a launch console and are in the Mario Kart camp, I really don’t think you have to spend more than €510 on day one. If you have a Switch (and, even better, a Pro Controller) already - which I’d imagine most on this forum do - you’re even flying for multiplayer.

Slightly more costly if you’re not on the Mario Kart train, true, but I’m not sure there even is a big launch game outside of that - DK a month later seems to be the main thing in terms of first party stuff.

Playing Zelda in higher resolution and frame rate will be a nice launch bonus too, like upgrading a graphics card and revisiting games that melted your old one.

For the SD card I’d be waiting a bit to see how prices play out. NVME drives for PS5 came down very quickly so I’d be happy holding out, especially since it’s unclear how quickly the internal storage will fill up atm.

Only extra then is a case, which I personally consider pretty much mandatory for handheld use - wish Nintendo had gone down the Steam Deck route there and packaged it in one.

Smarter buying the original pro controller for €60 over the pro 2 version for €90.

Yeah and Nintendo should do a Switch 3 in 8 to 10 years. No need for pointless confusion.

Combination of China and Vietnam. Both of which have tariffs applied. Nintendo diversified their manufacturing to include Vietnam.

Agreed. I'm going to hold off on the Pro Controller 2, because I have a Pro Controller already, and I want confirmation of hall-effect sticks. I manually upgraded a pair of joy-con to hall-effect sticks so that'll serve me well for Switch 2 also.
The customisable back buttons are nice on the Pro 2 but not something I "need".
I'll probably just pick up the Mario Kart bundle like you said and maybe a case and call it a day. I'll get the upgrades for Zelda with NSO+ anyways.

Good spot. At first I I thought the whole camera accessory thing was a bit of a gimmick, then I saw you can buy this version:
