no way I'm dumping it. All parts work now except for main stack boards.

Ive replaced that before and the board stack costs 200+ euro .

There was also no way I was hacking some Logitech or other nonsense into it and wrecking the cab. Hence I've replaced numerous parts of the years which all cost a few bob.

Even worse I'm not dumping it and using crts, a pc and a few chairs! I take it you don't own any arcade cabs from such sacreligious comments !!!?

So now I've come across that interface above so in reality only the drive board/servo board on the machine needs to work and goodbye all other boards in the cab...and no need to hack up pedals and wheel

Sega model 1-3 cabs have so many components and different boards In them it's madness ..drive boards , servo boards , filter boards , sound boards ..not to mention the huge 3 stack main board

Touring car is a model 2c board . Think scud racer is model 3.

Sorry , i missed that ya have a driving cab. Is it scud race ? Lovely cab those

Is it that hard to mame one?

Seemed a pain in the hole to me until I saw these boards

No, not a scud race. It's a Battle Gear 3, based off the system246, which is basically a modified PS2. Solid enough cab but had issues with the JVS I/O boards, and they're almost impossible to get replacements.

At one stage i had it working and then I had to move some stuff around and it was stored in less than ideal conditions and now needs some TLC, which I haven't time for, with family and work stuff.

So I'm thinking do i want to pump money into restoring it, or into MAME'ing it. The blocker on that, apart from money, is hooking the controls to a PC. Other than that, i think it's pretty straight forward. On my other cab, i got a U-HID and that connects to the PC via USB and connects my buttons and sticks via the I/O board. Something like that would be perfect for the driver cab. I remember looking at a jvs-pac a while back but cant remember if it worked with wheels and pedals. The problem there is that if the I/O board is faulty then I've nothing to pass the controls through, hence the mention of the console wheels…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

Yeah I get ya . The board relies on the original servo and drive board on the cab , so if either are faulty or become faulty your back to square one.

AHH I'll give one a whirl. I've Thrown enough money at it over the years , sure what's a few more bob . Ill plough ahead out of stubbornness

You can look at something cheap like using OpenJVS (https://github.com/OpenJVS/OpenJVS).

But I think it's much the same in the sense that you need a working I/O board. Also, I'm not sure if it can handle the extra inputs like the steering wheel and pedals. I need to look into it more. Hopefully it does everything because, for the sake of a tenner a pop, it seems ideal!

BTW @unky chop chop that link to the arduino website doesn't work. Any chance you can find the link again?

    Hey 80s Synth Pop,

Thank you for offering to help! A group of us will be meeting up in Belfast next week to work on the After Burner Climax DLX, so your reference to the rs232 converter board is very helpful. I'll let you know how we get on!

Yeah, I'm aware of the "Super DLX" version of AB Climax; it's impressive that it moves in all directions, but I think it looks a bit silly. To me it looks like a massive Transformer; it doesn't say After Burner...

In my opinion the DLX version is a better looking machine.

And yes, Daves Cycraft is a monster indeed! That would be a mean game game of Initial D. 🔥

To be fair I think the Funworld in Limerick is the only one didn't go kaput Supermacs used have multiple. The one above Supermacs in Eyre Square was goated. There was a really snazzy place City Limits outside Galway that had a Cycraft, bowling etc. That went out of business. Places like the Planet in Ennis seem to get most of their revenue from the astroturf rental, birthday parties and the indoor play area. The vast majority of people don't care about arcade machines without a redemption component. I love snooker and I'd say it's the same case for that everywhere I used to like to play is now closed down. Retro arcades are only ever going to do alright in Ireland as a garnish on an established bar/food business or in the case of the Cork one a very well established bowling, karaoke, bar and food business.

Is Barcadia in Cork worth a road trip? We'd be coming from Mid-Ulster. There's no games list on Barcadia's website so it's really hard to gauge..

Interesting that there used to be a Sega Cycraft in Galway. I've never seen one out in the wild on Irish shores and wrongly assumed Dav's Cycraft was the only one.

    Side note -

I'm really looking foward to Base Arcade and also the Retro Room's arcade events in Belfast next month.

Both have a fantastic and ever growing list of games.

It's always great to meet other Irish arcade gamers and collectors at these events.

The original iteration of Barcadia in the big room was class but it only lasted a year or so. Since they moved it to the right hand side of the building it's a little underwhelming. More of a restaurant venue with a smattering of arcades now. The Planet in Cork City has more machines than the Ennis/Galway one though so between that and Barcadia you could probably put down a few of hours. Wouldn't say it's worth driving from Belfast for though. I think Level Up in Limerick is my favourite they've got the best music game selection and they change stuff out more frequently.

There was a Cycraft in Dr. Quirkies in Dublin for a couple of years as well. Like the Galway one they never had F-Zero though it was only Club Kart which threw you about violently when you made the slightest of turns. It was 2 euro a pop so I wasn't tempted persevere get over the learning curve.

Jesus ya have an outrun sitdown. That there is a thing to behold . I've only ever seen one in my life ...that was one that used to be in Dublin airport and I used to volunteer going to the airport with my parents if they ever had to pick up or collect someone...just for one go on it

The Snooker / Arcade model was great while it lasted used to love it too i.e. The Vic in Limerick, now more or less none left, and those left with snooker tables are often average at best.

As for the Cycrafts, I think there were only about 150ish made apparently so I would say no more than maybe 3 over here at most. About 30k brand new apparently back in the day, Initial D/ Club Kart were not games known for taking big money in Europe so now sure how these sims did, pretty sure mine has a crazy amount of plays on the coin shoot though. I don't pay those arcade for having to move them things, they weigh over a tonne a piece, fun.

A short version of the F Zero story is this (to my understanding). A Cycraft game/version was made and shown at shows/location tested, it did well but Nintendo wanted a crazy amount of money per machine for the liscence (say more than the machine's cost) so it got scrapped/became F Zero AX. The rom and firmware has been dumped so there is a possibility of converting it as there is someone out there who offers it, have been tempted to do so with mine but obviously the control panel would be an issue, also I love Initial D3 so that's a factor too, wouldn't want it permanent. I can say honestly the motion/experience on a cycraft is something else, really a step above Afterburner Dlx and the newer simulators imo, only beat by R360.

Really productive evening last night working on the After Burner Climax.

The chassis for Sanwa PFX monitor was recently serviced by Gunblade (UKVAC forums), so we got that hooked up and the picture quality is absolutely gorgeous.

**Note - the marquee and bezel are removed in the photos as we were working on the monitor.

We're not getting any sound from this machine though... No buzzing from the speakers, nothing.

Could anyone point us in the right direction diagnosing the lack of sound on this machine?

From a guess - best to rule out an amp being a problem, check the audio output from the Lindbergh (thats the machine running the game I believe?). If you have audio there, its gonna be a cable/amp problem upstream

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Musashi_

Yes, this machine is running original Lindbergh (Yellow) hardware.

Good shout man, it really is a process of elimination. 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Musashi_

So, my mates have informed me that they got sound when external speakers were plugged directly into the Lindbergh sound card.

It's not getting to talk with the AB Climax built in amp and speakers though..

Moving forward, we'll start by looking for connections that might be loose and work from there.

Still, that's great news. Much better having a working Lindbergh and game with some simple enough amp and speaker problems. Worst comes to worst, you can easily replace them with generic parts.

Looking absolutely amazing, I'd say you were thrilled to see that monitor fire up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 983 ✭✭✭dav09

Check all connections to the sound amp, i.e does it have power, is it recieving audio signal, fuses, is it sending out audio signal to the speakers on the cabinet, should be fairly staightforward from here since you know the Lindbergh unit is outputting sound. I might have a sound amp if it's an issue with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 797 ✭✭✭80s Synth Pop

Very odd to have no sound at all as there are 2x sound boards for front and rear that are interchangeable so rare for both to die.

Try go into the test menu and do the sound test for each speaker.

It's not just the volume knob by any chance? (In the lower coin box to the right).

Otherwise check all the cabling related to sound.

Did you get the cab moving?

The adapter for my Tempest Arcade1Up can arrived, means I'll be able to convert to it a RPi and still use the Spinner.

As a result, I'll be able to install a whole bunch of titles to the rather limited three that it came with.

    Love tempest , hate arcade1up.

Is it a tempest cab ?

On a side note ,my family house is being renovated, I found a complete crt joker monitor in the attic . I've not tested it yet .

I remember I did have 3 working , I necked one , used another one so this is the third . Ill test it and then it can go to a nice home for someone on here if it works

Quick question.. wheres the best place to get arcade parts and bits and bobs now.

I've not used anything since Brexit … I used to use Videotronics, Gremlin solutions ,arcade paradise and a few others i cant remember that were in the EU. Therw was one in Holland that was my one stop shop for everything and i cant for the life of me recall the name

just after some t-moulding and small things like buttons that i don't want to pay an arm and a leg in shipping for.

    cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭bugs

Smallcab have a good stock of items. They're in the EU and shipping is reasonable from memory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

yeah that seems fairly decent, cheers

Arcade Express in Spain is good too.

    It is indeed.
I'm now thinking of dumping the crappy lcd and bodging in a LED instead, something crisper, better contrast ratios.
It will be easy enough to mount a 16:9 monitor behind the 4:3 aperture, and set the display size to 4:3 as well.
We shall give it a go over the coming days, and see what happens.
I have a PC, control interfaces and a monitor or two lying around.
    Time to begin experimentation!

Well I knackered the monitor on my cocktail just now.

Had it turned in and my test switch wasn't connected so I traced the wire and unfurled a load that I had cable tied and out of harms way,, one connector hit off something and sparks flew :)

Everything shut down. Powers up now but monitor just has a blinking grey:(

And on this day my laptop won't charge anymore and my phone screen has gone green. Ti's a good day for technology
