I think you need 2x donor carts and there are not enough memory chips in 1x for a full set of all 162 games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,443 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

Yep, or one cart and additional EEPROMs but those are pretty much gone from the likes of AliExpress.

Update: There is a wiff of hope from Arcade-Projects! Lets see what happens

    Hey o1s1n,

Not a bother, I'll gladly push this forum on the Irish Arcade Facebook group. There's a great community on here and it's fantastic to see it still going strong after all these years. I first hit on this forum back around 2005/2006 when I posted under a different alias.

There's 6 arcade cab owners/collectors in my hometown alone - Dungannon, Co Tyrone of all places - so I'll push this forum to my friends as well.

Truth be told, I'm not a fan of Facebook in the slightest. Perhaps this forum could be the best place to arrange Irish Arcade meets?

To date, a small group of us from Mid-Ulster have been arranging meets at Base Arcade Belfast once a month or so. There's always a great bunch of people at Base. 👍

Keen to hear the thoughts of others regarding arranging arcade related meets. I'm over 22 years deep into the arcade collecting game and, after all these years, it's always great to connect with other Irish arcade gamers and collectors.

    Cheers.

I think cross-promotion between Facebook/here/email would be ideal to be honest, some people use different platforms, it's a little bit of work but some people are more active elsewhere, it's hard to please everyone.

As for meets, yeah I always thought there was decent room for having some here, would be interested. I've been working on getting somewhere down south to host regular meets, have collected about 40/50 machines some very interesting ones, although will probably be somewhat lo-key rather than a big public space realistically, but would like to include competitions, etc to get as many people involved. Would be nice to have a couple of spots around Ireland to have meetups but not many people have the cabinets and/or space.

Fair play, nice one! Be great to get a few more heads over this way. We definitely suffered a bit of a loss of people after boards.ie changed over to Vanilla. Seems to be slowly crawling back from the depths though thankfully.

Unfortunately the meet ups we used to have died a death though, haven't had one in years! 😥

Great thing about this place is it's accessible to everyone. Plus anything that's put up re maintenance threads etc stays there as a resource, rather than dissapearing into the ether like it does on Facebook.

I didn't realise Base was actually a permanently set up thing by the way, was thinking it was actually just a short term pop up arcade. Would love to drop up to it sometime.

What kind of cabinets are the guys you know interested in collecting? Vintage stuff or more modern gear / candies etc?

Spent the past few days at a arcade trade fair. A lot of the new games coming out are fairly poor from China but there was some interesting ones mixed in. Good to see a Deadstorm Pirates reboot and they've done it very well. There were two modern deluxe-sim type Afterburner games that were somewhat decent. Lots of VR, Godzilla VR a highlight. Sega's new racer Apex Rebels and the new NFS are both motion games too but fairly decent. Great to see NBA Jam back via Namco/Raw Thrills although looks to technically be a different series, but plays very similar and is really decent fun. Namco releasing a Taiko kiddie ride with inbuilt rhythm game is very random. Overall a lot of very poor generic chinese games that I didn't mention here, played tonnes, but good to see a handful of decent are still being made, some interesting pins too were there from American Pinball, Pinball Bros, etc.

Stumbled across this while looking for guitar auctions - looks in good shape and might not go for much as its pretty well hidden on this auctioneers site:

I love a 2 player shooter but if I had the money, I'd go for this:

That is one bizarre list of auctions, everything from vinyl to arcade machines and human bones 😁

Talking about fixed gun cabinets, I've fond memories of playing Space Gun in the Bowling Alley in Bray.

Alien 3: The Gun was fantastic fun too.

Space Gun in Bray fan! I have great memories of playing it and a whole lot of Soul Edge on that sit-down cab they had it in.

Ah that's gas, mad to think of folks on here playing the same machines. 😁

I remember that being there for quite a while too. Was in the corner down the back on the left. Wonder what happened to it in the end.

They had a nice sit down Sega Megalo 50 that Virtua Tennis was running on, but I've a vague memory of Soul Edge running on that too.

Anybody remember Dr. Quirkey's having the full scale Ridge Racer back in the day? The one with the modified car that you sat in with the game projected in front of you?

Or is this some kind of fever dream that I'm having?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 783 ✭✭✭80s Synth Pop

There was something big upstairs before they installed bumper cars. They also had a r360 sega cab in the front window for sure. I played that. Got around 30 seconds on it before I died.

Walked by the place last week and it's just a gambling emporium now.

LeisurePlex in tallaght has some arcade cabs:

    Batman (twin racer)

    Crusin Blast (twin racer)

    Dead heat (namco twin racer)

    Snocross (twin racer)

Jurassic park (raw thrills twin shooter)

    A dance dance revolution

    Hydro thunder (single)

    Super Bikes 2 (twin motorbikes)

Fast and furious bikes (twin motor bikes)

    Aliens Armageddon (twin shooter)

Batman dark night pinball (right flipper sticks)

The CRT maximum tune cab is gone.

Off to London in a few weeks and noticed there’s now a fair few decent options for playing old arcade games, some having opened relatively recently. Now that Bob’s Casino and Token are gone, I can’t think of anywhere in Dublin that has a decent spread of machines.

Interesting discussion happening about those new Unico Nova Blast candy cabinets over on Arcade-projects. Seems they're not great.

    https://www.arcade-projects.com/threads/unico-nova-blast-lcd-candy-cab.28086/page-9#post-455017

With that said, I was given some hands on time to a bunch of these cabs, and I lag tested them. Here's some stuff I observed:

    • I only tested HDMI since I forgot to bring my VGA gear. Maybe VGA is better, but I HIGHLY doubt this.
    • Lag from top of the panel using Progressive signals (480p-1080p) is 20ms. This is significantly slower than the original ULM26, which is closer to 3-4ms, making it roughly 1 full frame slower in comparison.
    • When switching to Interlaced signals, 1 additional frame (16.66ms) of lag is added (480i-1080i). At least it actually works in comparison to the ULM26.
    • Scaling on lower resolutions is really bad. Even 480p looks extremely soft from whatever processing the monitor is doing.
    • Shipping damage is very common. Of the 6 cabs, 5 has cracked plexi and other damage. 1 shipped with an incorrect topper/speaker unit.
    • Arcade control panel is standard Sega profile, but the housing has a variety of issues if you expect it to be a 1:1 candy cab experience (panel is angled downwards, panel is way too high, panel is too shallow)

That's about as far as I went with these. Overall I guess it's a minimum viable product, assuming buyers didn't get screwed with shipping and/or damage, which it seems they did a majority of the time. It's a more convenient plug and play experience in comparison to buying something like a used LCD cab or a Chewlix, so I wont say it has no purpose on the market. The slower and worse processing of the "improved" LCD is a serious bummer, and the increased resolution is irrelevant if it handles low resolutions so poorly. If the ULM26 is anything to go by, then I look forward to Unico's usual spiel on how much they "care about customers" and "are committed to fixes" while taking years to push something out that ends up causing even more problems.

Old games best bet is either NQ64 Shoreditch (best) or Soho, couple of bits were in Las Vegas soho but it's not great anymore. I went to Four Quarters Stratford last month would give there a shout too, small but decent. Gravity Stratford/Wandsworth great for new games, if I was heading back to London I'd probably give Gravity Stratford a shout and then hit Four Quarters Stratford for retro they're fairly close 10/15 mins away walking distance. There's Heart of gaming in Croydon too but it's quite far from central London.

Here's something I've never actually seen available for sale before, they're just that rare- the first candy cabinet designed in 1986, a Sega City!

Guy did an amazing job refurbishing it. It's not cheap by any means but my god is it beautiful.

Nice, the edge connector in one of the photos…arrow align good or arrow align bad? :)

Good to see the seller is stocked up for the winter anyway

Sounds like a mixed bag, but great to see some standout games! Deadstorm Pirates and Godzilla VR sound awesome. Would be cool to see a solid paintball arcade game with realistic gear and VR action!

I think a couple of people on the arcadeotaku forum had a Sega City years ago but they certainly don't turn up often.

The Ridge Racer cabinet with the projector was in McDonalds arcade in Lahinch for most of the 00's. Think the picture was fairly dire though.

Looking at that arcade expo lineup it seems to me they're still trying too hard to draw in people with spectacle of the cabinet rather than having games that are actually good. It might sort of work covering the thing in LEDs but when they're that gigantic and expensive the number of locations suitable for the machines is pretty limited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 976 ✭✭✭dav09

Yeah Sega City's are amongst the rarest candies. Was there really a Ridge Racer fulls-scale there with the MX-5? Or was it just a deluxe type? I been a few times in the 00s but I never remember that but possibly, none known to be still (fully) in existence anymore now, they were crazy expensive I belive six figures when new.

Most new arcade cabinets now are Chinese made, designed and manufactured. I can tell from experience most of them perform terribly on arcade floors unless they're interactive somehow and have a theme/ brand people recognize. Most developers miss the boat completely and seem to think LED lights and nice designs makes huge earning games but it's not the case and replay value is important, the gameplay has to be there too. I think a lot of them are aimed at seaside FEC's where a lot of casual people pass through in busy UK resorts/spots. Sega Amusements have contracted the likes of Whalap and 3MindWave and in fairness some of their games were decent, plus there has been some more exceptions, there was a modern Afterburner deluxe clone that was somewhat enjoyable there, but I feel 90% of what comes out of China is fairly rubbish.

@KlasenMicheal Deadstorm Pirates, NBA Superstars and Godzilla VR were among the top games from the show I'd for sure try them if I seen them at a local arcade, Sega Amusements and Namco are still making decent games (albeit somewhat hit and miss) as with Raw Thrills (although much more miss than hit). That paintball game would be interesting, I've played some crazy VR simulators at shows over the years but it seems most operators won't take a risk on a lot of them as the decent ones usually require staff and cost 200k+. I played a game recently called 'On Point' and it was like a modern Point Blank sort of game with real Airsoft pellets, it was pretty cool.

I haven't seen those On Point games, that's a really great solution for dealing with the whole LCD / lightgun lag thing. Literally fire a projectile at the screen!

I was over in Korea a few months ago and aside from claw machines everywhere, one of the most popular machines was someting similar. AR-15 type air guns bolted to a cabinet and you fire steel pellets.

Ah here we go, managed to find a photo.

The 80's candy's look sick part of me always wanted a Pony Mk II 28 or an Egret 1 (that screen angle!) but I know I'm not going to be arsed maintaining them so they'll just end up sitting there dead taking up space half the time.

I played the MX-5 Ridge Racer in Trocadero it wasn't that beast. But I remember them having a very large one in McDonalds at some point might have been on a cabinet like this (I know this is Rave Racer but it was Ridge Racer they had).

    rave-racer-48556.jpg

I'm sure it's spectacularly hard to make a good earning game nowadays. The most consistent model seems to be kiddy gambling/redemption which I absolutely abhor but certainly seems to keep most people entertained.

There's not as much maintance in them really.

All I've done with my Pony in the last decade is had a cap kit completed on the chassis. Was just a matter of whipping it out and posting it off to Grantspain in the UK and then putting it back into the cabinet once he posted it back.

Been going absolutely fine since, picture is crisp and bright. I'd say it'll go for at least another 10 years before I've to start looking chassis maintenance again.

Theres actually a guy selling two Pony IIs over on arcade Otaku at the moment for fairly decent prices.

Considering the prices I've seen, those aren't too bad.

I've currnetly a want for a Vewlix or even the China version/clone (chewlix?) - Someone had a lindbergh cab on here awhile ago, but I think they are larger. If I found one, it would prob replace the two Dinokings cabs I have. The passive search continues!

Flat panel based cabinets have really taken off in popularity a lot in the last couple of years. Been interesting to see. I remember there was a Lindbergh for sale on adverts a few years back for ages and nobody was interested.

I think a lot of folks are sticking OLEDs in them now and they look great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,443 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

Must look up the size differences between a Lindbergh and a Vewlix

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46 Musashi_

Lifelong Sega arcade nut here - I had absolutely no idea that this Sega City cab even existed! Very cool. 👌
Thank you for sharing this, 01s1n.

The overall aesthetic of this cab is such a good design that has aged very well since 1986; it certainly doesn't look 'old' in 2025...

I was seriously about to embark on a journey to find one of these elusive 1986 Sega 'City' cabs...

... I'm only after eyeing up the current going rate for them.

    Holy crap!! 😬

Blast City or Astro City it is then..

I ended up with the Lindbergh that was listed on adverts a few years back, it has been used in Level Up as a Virtua Fighter V cabinet and Virtua Tennis too previously. It is a bigger european (non-sitdown) Lindbergh vs the Candy lingbergh though, the place also have 6 Vewlix's cabinets too I would say they are both similar size. Personally prefer Noir/Nu/Lindbergh cabinets to Vewlix's but that's just me.
