Hoping it goes away by the looks of it.

They should issue a statement alerting their customers.

Anyone who bought that pack should have their deposit refunded.

on average the shop i work collects about €55 euro a day on deposit return charges, and from our machine gives back on average probably about 90 cent.

our machine is fairly shite to be fair, but still.

i've been on both sides of this. it's a pain in the arse, but i dont blame them if shops are understaffed/busy

one customer and wonky bag of cans & i could be stuck at the stupid machine for 10-15 minutes while we're trying to prepare for close of night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I get your point about closing time.

Maybe shops should be allowed to close the machines ahead of actual closing time say 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,553 ✭✭✭jj880

Or the machines could just f*cking work and refund deposits to an IBAN.

Well it's kind of stating the obvious but yes the machines should work.

An electronic refund to accounts would be a useful option too.

Some might say its obvious to not suggest even more RVM down time than is already happening with Re-Turn.

Well with all due respect its part of your job. The legislation places obligations on retailers to take back in scope cans/bottles. It doesn't provide for retailers doing this at their leisure.

In any case it wasnt near closing time in either scenario.

Am I the only person that has now 3 deposit voucher receipts in my wallet that I have forgotten to use in the shop!

Thats three times I have returned cans did my shopping and forgot to hand over the deposit voucher lol. In any event I noticed that a lot of my cans were crushed down a bit and I popped them open using hand manipulation. They were still quite dented and battered but the machine accepted them anyway. Is it once the barcode can be read perfectly they will be accepted or is there a level of can damage that wont be accepted via a camera or scanner in the machine?

You are probably losing a lot of money on machine.

    There are many associated costs:

    Purchase

    External Maintenance (specially after warranty)

    In-house Maintenance

    Electricity

    Loss of retail space

    Life expectancy

Nothing in the rules to stop it: is a shop based limit created to the scheme and not card based

“I can’t pay my staff or mortgage with instagram likes”.

Way back on the thead someone posted that the vouchers are not ideal for carrying around like cash. Because the print quality is not high, and they might not scan if they got faded. I did an experiment with damaged containers, and got the same result as you. Once the barcode is not distorted, it will scan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭elperello

They might but our poster who works in a shop mentioned the practical difficulty of someone turning up at closing time with a large number of returns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,553 ✭✭✭jj880

Which wouldn't be a problem if the machines were working properly and refunding to a bank account. Hell you could go mad altogether and leave RVMs online for an hour after closing if they were all the same RVM, outside so not blocking up shop entrances and fully trialled to a high standard before this shyite started.

Lidl in Nutgrove are selling Carsberg 12 packs, charging the €1.80 deposit but these cans were produced pre 2024, date of production is 11/23. Checked the external barcode on the box and obviously not in the DRS scheme yet I paid a deposit on it.

I've posted in here a few times, have never had an issue with the system before, 100% success rate on my returns but now have these that can't be returned. Going to contact the LIDL whatsapp as other poster did when I've photos of the cans and barcodes or more realistically I'll just take the €1.80 loss as pretty sure half the cans are in the green bin.

Yes, in an ideal world where everything works, but as we know from reports here we have a bit to go.

Interesting that Lidl who actually ran trials and have experience of DRS in other countries seem to be having so many problems.

I got it sorted fairly quickly using WhatsApp but for what I gained I'm not sure if it was worth the hassle for my high blood pressure. As I said, it's more for the principle. I wont forget it happening at lidl either. I'll just use my money elsewhere in future.

It might vary by what shop you get the voucher in. I had some faded ones from Lidl after being in my phone case for a few weeks and they scanned fine

I've done the same. The trick I've found is to leave the voucher by the card/cash you'll be using when you want to redeem. (ie, same wallet flap etc). That way when you go to pay, you'll see the voucher.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Success! Well almost 33 own brand Lidl tonic water returned to a machine outside Lidl. First ten total pain two went through first time 6 second time and 2 totally rejected. So I thought I'd experiment. Just decided that bottom end first with barcode at about 2 o'clock would be a good start. The next 23 went through perfectly along with the 2 that got rejected. Will try the same in a couple of weeks time and see if thats solved it for me.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Have you checked the barcode on the cans using the barcode checker on the Re-turn website?

    Might be worth a try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

There are no barcodes on the cans, they were produced before the system even came into place.

I tried one of them in the RVM and all it kept saying was "No barcode detected" and back out it came after 4 tries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭elperello

There were some old stock items that had barcodes which were included at the start.

But that doesn't apply in your case.

You had no hope of getting those cans accepted by an RVM.

It sounds suspiciously like old stock that was overlooked somehow and what they should be doing now is clearing it at MUP without deposit.

Has to be deliberate too because the till was programmed to charge the deposit on the box barcode which was never part of the scheme.

Complain and escalate until you get your money back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

This is exactly what it was, MUP being charged on them to clear off the old stock they have before June. The price on display has the "€1.80 deposit" section on it.

Some of the Lidl beers have the sign up that says something like "There is a deposit charged on these even though there are no barcodes however they are in the DRS, return them to Lidl for a full refund." This was and is still not on the MUP old stock they're clearing.

I'll be sending a compliant when I'm home if I still have some cans and the box.

First ever issue with the system and as said earlier it's the principle of it. I've actively participated and encouraged others too and still not good enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭reubenreuben

I sent this earlier and this us what lidls response was.

'There are a number of items on the market on which deposits will be paid even before the logo appears on the packaging. This is a short-term solution aimed to simplify stock management and reduce waste. This would be the case in all stores. If you are charged the recycling charge in Lidl you will be able to return the Cans to Lidl. '

What if you dont want to return the cans to lidl?

Basically they can still charge the deposit on old stock. Absolute robbery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭elperello

There was a concession that allowed stock with certain barcodes but no logo to be included.

They are incorrectly implying this permits them to charge deposits on cans with no barcode which could never be accepted in an RVM.

It's wrong and they shouldn't be doing it.

The Times UK,sorry can't say what date now.Could have been Feb,March or early April

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,333 ✭✭✭✭kippy

Id love to know, numbers sold per day I. The same period and more importantly number actually recycled out of those collected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,031 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Lidl are breaking the rules here. The charge for registered barcodes without a logo is a thing; charging for products without a registered (or any!) barcode is absolutely not.

Lidl are who you'd have to get your money back from for a mischarge anyway though.

That press release 14 May with those dodgy numbers has the paragraph below. The number is going to be fluid. A can bought in March could turn up in a machine in September.

    Return rates

The Irish Scheme began on 1 February 2024. Retailers are still phasing out non-logo and non-deposit drinks containers on shelves until the end of the transition period, 31 May 2024. Therefore, Ireland will not have a full year of the scheme in action until 1 June 2025 to assess more accurate return metrics.

The assumption of an equal number of containers sold daily throughout the year, 5 million per day, doesn’t align with the actual sales pattern of drink containers. Peak periods, such as Christmas and the summer months, significantly impact sales. Additionally, this method fails to consider the volume of non-deposit stock sold by retailers during the transition period until 31 May.
