My point is that we starting falling behind around 2017, while other unions were professionalising the women's game I think the IRFU realised they had to play the long game a bit like in men's rugby where the grass roots of the game had to be developed with proper underage structures and you're seeing now with the 2 combined provincial teams the intent is there to grow the game and make it more professional, the 7's and 15's are on a completely different trajectory but with the same goals.

They've made a mess of the 15 partially because of the focus on sevens. We went from beating the All Black's at the world cup to the third tier of women's international rugby play the likes of Kazakhstan, hard to give them credit for that sort of strategy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭Thud

They mentioned on commentary that the last round in Madrid is some sort of play off for the top 8 ranked teams

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Yeah, that's the biggest change along with the lack of London date.

I've yet to hear anything about the format of that Madrid grand final. Curious as to how it differs to a standard round beyond giving a team further down the rankings an opportunity to be crowned the outright winners.

The game has gone professional. We don't have the set up or money to compete with professional teams.

As Typhoony says above, we need a long term strategy for 15's starting with grass roots and building from there.

We started going rapidly downhill in 2022. At first we were getting destroyed by England and France but then Scotland, Wales and Italy got in on the act.

Build slowly and properly and we'll be competitive again.

It's already in play, lots of girls playing underage rugby now. The future is bright.

Not a great first day for either team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Great end to the weekend for the men's beating Fiji to get 5th spot. That should put us joint second in the series. Argentinia running away with it, playing their fourth final in a row later.

Possibly mentioning this a bit late but TNT Sports have done a deal to show the remainder of this seasons HSBC Svns series.

What have Argentina done to become so dominant in the last couple of seasons. They've been utterly untouchable

was offered free tickets to the tournament over the weekend. i live pretty close to the stadium (10 mins walk or so), i knew lots of others going and i didnt really have anything else going on over the weekend (club games are cancelled when the 7s is on).

turned them down because i honestly have almost zero interest in 7s (save for wanting the irish teams to do well).

its great to see the womens team doing well but its a shame that it seems to be at the detriment of 15s

Sevens is just fun, it's great to watch. It's a great day out, a party atmosphere with lots of people from different nations there.

I'm a fifteens guy myself but sevens is great fun.

You missed out on a really enjoyable day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,295 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

i know, im sure it was alot of fun and anyone i know that went said it was great. having said that, the idea of paying 12ish euro ($20CAN) for beers all day combined with being able to tick a few things off my to-do list made me go with turning them down, tbh im have much more fomo about missing the NRL kick-off in vegas this weekend but thats for a different day

The men's team play France in the semi-final this evening, decent chance of making the final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Wow, the group games were extremely frustrating yesterday. We got 4 yellow cards over the course of two games against Spain and Argentina. We were then just a missed NZ conversion with the last kick of the game away from not making the cup quarters.

I just assumed another defeat by the pumas was on the cards but this time they picked up two yellows and the tournament is now wide open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭Thud

was not expecting to see those semi finalists when I woke up. France are getting better as each tournament goes on but can definitely beat them if we play well.

Seems like we save our performances for knockout rounds.

Spain also getting stronger but shouldn't fear them or GB if we make final.

Womens team badly missing Lucy and Amy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

What a shame. That missed conversion was basically in the exact same spot as the NZ one which resulted in us qualifying for the knockouts. The series was there for the taking.

Lot of mistakes in the first half cost us against South Africa. We came back at them.in the second half, they got a red card with three minutes left but it took.us too long to get it down to a one score game and the last kick off was with time just about up. We didn't win the restart and South Africa held on to win 22-17. McNulty had a great game.

Mens team beat Samoa in 2nd game. Still on track for 1/4s

Very impressive that the Men's team will be entering the final standard series in Singapore next month without a single finish outside the top 5. I guess that's why we're second in the rankings and likely to end up there if we keep this high standard up.

Will be a bit of a sickener if we then have a poor final tournament in Madrid. Not sure I like this new format to be honest.

    Wrong thread

they seem to lift their game for the knock out rounds vs the pools so hopefully that continues into Madrid…and Paris!

Ireland won bronze in Hong Kong after beating Australia 14-5

Yeah, France played great against us. We'll win one soon hopefully.

No score in the first half of the final, incredible defense on show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Am I right in thinking Argentina knocked us out of the first 3 rounds and then France knocked us out of the next 3?

Singapore is on this weekend in case anyone missed it. Win against GB and loss against US for the men. Win against Canada and loss to NZ for women. Fiji and Spain up next respectively early tomorrow morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭Thud

great win against Argentinaand into the semis against GB for the men. We have the beating of GB so hopefully can make the final.

We really seem to raise our game for the knockout stages.

Women into 5th place playoff after losing to Aus in quarters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,652 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Brilliant win in the 1/4, nice to get that duck off of their back. In a great position to make final and maybe get a first win. GB have been class this round though, won't be a push over

The fact that we're still in with a chance of winning the league going into the last day is an outstanding achievement.

Looks like it'll be a very competitive grand final too with the field somewhat leveling out as the season progressed.

ref making some dodgy calls here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭Thud

Good win in extra time even with a biased ref. Never seen penalties given for diving through the contact area to tackle the scrum half or for dragging some one off the field. Then blew up the first half after GB knock on without giving us advantage and didn’t check a very forward pass for the GB try in the second

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

I watched it there. Wasn't biased reffing. Those penalties were technically correct.

Time was up for first half so didn't have to give the advantage

dragging him over the line was part of the tackle movement. Conroys tackle on scrum half was perfectly legal, ball was out so contact area didn't exist any more, ref thought he was going to knock it on in tackle so was already blowing whistle when it wen backwards. pass for try was a mile forward

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Great to get into the final, although Argentina winning (with the last play of the game? I didn't watch) means they win the league.

The difficulty in getting those refereeing decisions right and the subsequent frustrations is why I struggle to enjoy SVNS as much as I could. A harsh penalty, leading to a yellow card has such an impact on a short game. To be honest I didn't even pay much attention to the penalty awarded to us in front of the posts at the end. In from the side was it?

Feels like the Aussies got a bit shafted in the game after by a big decision at a major point in the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Two set piece opportunities to simply score and win the final but we failed at both attempts. It was definitely there for the taking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,091 ✭✭✭blackcard

Very unlucky. Should have been a penalty to Ireland and yellow card to NZ at the start of the second half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭Thud

tough loss, could have gone either way.

Nz looking like they are starting to find form for GF and Olympics..

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

Kennedy also taken out of it in 2nd half with his kick through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Compounded by what seemed like a harsh penalty awarded to NZ directly after.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Pools for svns championship in Madrid.

Men play new Zealand, Fiji, South Africa

    Women play Australia, France, Fiji

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭typhoony

So 1 player from each of the other 3 provinces still to be announced, Balacoune or Izzy from Ulster, Andrew Smith from Connacht and Nash or Daly from Munster. A

I don't think Nash has played for Ireland in 7s. But Tadhg Beirne and Jack Daly have…

Timoney is another possibility from Ulster. My perception is he probably played more 7s than Baloucoune did, and certainly featured more than Izuchukwu.

It could be Jennings from Connacht.

I don't know how likely it is you'd see someone who hasn't been involved in the 7s set up before feature - Hansen, for example. My guess is it'll be Timoney/Baloucoune, Shane Daly and Andrew Smith.
