Izuchukwu grabs the winner for Ireland on the final play against USA

Playing France or Argentina in the final. Argentina were scarey good against England.

Just turned it to see the last 2 minutes of that match. It looks crazy.

Loving this more than sevens tbh. The energy and speed of the game is massive.

It's absolutely mental, but it's so entertaining. It's just pure end to end, and it never stops. Other than the scrums which are uncontested, there's no lineouts (subs throw the ball in), there's no restarts (just starts again from the 5 metre line) and there's not many rucks really due to being 5v5.

It’s relentless. Some fitness levels required.

Sneaky from the argies. Everyone wanted the 1v1

Seems an odd way to win a final.

It's hilarious that none of the players really know the rules. Perry Baker said in his interview that the US team didn't even really want to be there at the start, Izuchukwu said they had only really started training for it two weeks ago and even then it was just sort of casual.

Some funny rules. Don't understand what happened at the end of France-Argentina and the "first to 3" rule for the one on one is ridiculous. England won because they got first go! USA never given a third attempt.

France - Argentina ended with a penalty that led to no advantage but the French assumed it was over.

Apparently with the one on ones whoever scores last in normal time goes first.

Scoring seems far too easy, especially from scrums. Think 5 person rugby might not be enough.

That's the whole appeal of it though. Rapid fire, end to end.

It's more for the mainstream than the actual rugby fans to be honest.

Was the last try not a forward pass?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,153 ✭✭✭A-Train

    That’s that

All a bit chaotic but something different. Teams will adapt - are any other such events planned anywhere else?

Respectable effort by the Irish lads; would like to see how Jordan Conroy get on.

Nothing's been announced yet but I know Ben Ryan was talking about it as a long term regular thing, saying it'll provide a regular income stream for players in between World Series events and Olympic Qualifiers etc.

This was the pilot really, so I guess it's depending on the viewership/attendance for this one as to whether it's financially feasible or not.

Were Ireland men in a sevens competition this weekend? If so, how did they do?

Yeah they played in Elche 7s, they topped the group with wins over Portugal, Scotland and Viator 7s, beat Spanish Barbarians in the quarters, Spain in the semis then lost to France 14-5 in the final.

    Adam Leavy (Lansdowne)
    Harry McNulty (UCD)
    John O’Donnell (Lansdowne)
    Aaron O’Sullivan (Blackrock/Leinster)
    Cormac Izuchukwu (Old Wesley)

maybe but much for a young relatively inexperienced guy to step up to that level considering it's debut as core side

Still kind of surprised at how leinster dominated these squads are

It's not too Leinster dominated I don't think - unless you're referring to Leinster location as opposed to Leinster Rugby.

Conroy and Leavy were with the Connacht academy.

McNulty and O'Shea were with the Munster academy.

O'Donnell and O'Sullivan are exiles (even though O'Sullivan is with Leinster, he was capped by Wasps in 2018)

The likes of Lennox and Roche are Leinster based, but did they represent Leinster underage?

i was referring to the province not professional team. Leavy still from Dublin.
Conroy is from offaly. Lennox, Roche are from leinster, play in leinster. It's completely dominated by players from leinster, or playing pro for leinster which is a bit diaappointing

The pittance they're paid plays a major part in that unfortunately, it's a massive commitment for any lads further out than Leinster to be travelling back and forth to Blanchardstown on a regular basis for what's essentially a development contract, or minimum wage. Especially now that they're going to be on the circuit which means they'll be full time.

Here we go again... If you can't work out why it's "Leinster dominated" you haven't really thought about it.

You're really looking too hard be disappointed so.

Conroy was picked up based on his club form from Bucs. Tell those fellas he's from Leinster

Also, Harry McNulty was born in Bahrain and grew up in the States.

Really disappointing we couldn't get someone closer to the province and had to outsource so far

get over yourself. Here what goes again?

What exactly is wrong with having an issue with a national squad overly dominated by players from one area especially in a game that isnt exactly played regularly and it's not like players from leinster play 7s more etc
I would say exact same if it was any other province

Are you saying that Leinster players are chosen for reasons other than merit? Are more deserving players from elsewhere being by- passed? Have you examples?

Was the wider training panel ever announced? Presumably guys like Jack Daly and Aaron Sexton will feature in the squads for other world series legs.

I think it's generally two legs and then a break for a few weeks, so any 13-man squad named will probably stay the same for those two weekends, unless there are injuries, I suppose.
