Local feeling is that Aughinish the big Russian company near Askeaton have skin in the game and are refusing to do without water during the repair process which would take 5 days, but that could be just talk. Nobody knows why its going on for this length of time.

I'm telling you if I lived there I would organise a local group of people affected and block the N69 which runs right through this entire area! Its one of the busiest national roads in the country. Leo Varadkar travelled to Foynes before Christmas to do a photo shoot about re-opening the railway line! I would have blocked his motorcade!

Those 5 litre bottle of water are about 3euro each and most weeks they buy at least 10 of them. Multiply that back to May 2023 and multiply that by 7000 households. Its crazy yet not a word it heard anywhere about it. Not to mention the amount of plastic waste this is producing locally!!

€1.45 in Lidl and Aldi for 5 litre bottles, be very interesting to see how much they increase them to after this is introduced (even though they are outside the tax)

It's not a tax......it's a refundable deposit. ! It would be very cynical of any store to increase 5l pricing. That said, it's bound to happen somewhere.

I completely agree. It is utterly nonesense! Every single bottle we buy is being recycled at home, always. I am obsessed with this. Now I have to pay an additional fortune with my weekly grocery because some ededt came up with this (in the middle of a massive inflation and living crisis!) , then go to the shop loaded with bottles, queue and wait if the machine works. What kind of efficiency is this? They don't know what else to do to bankrupt the population, more green taxes.

its a tax that you have the ability to get rebated back to you…. Once you put in the legwork, jump through the hoops and reclaim it back.

Looking online there is very little in the way of bargain water this week.

The recycling bin out the back of my house works ,with none of the sh1te involved in this Mickey Mouse scheme. Guaranteed when it does start that half the time you go to bring the bottles back the stupid fcukin machine won’t be working or you will end up stuck in a que behind someone who hasn’t a clue.

While you are doing it, there are so many people who don't, especially when out and about.

There is a thing that the cost of deposit needs to be high in order to provide a disincentive against not participating.

The system does work has worked across several countries in the EU for years. Yes there will be an adjustment period but that's with everything

Drinking fountains or water dispensers? I'm talking about machines where you could fill up a 5 litre bottle, that's clearly marked as filtered drinking water and properly maintained. And a campaign to encourage people to use such a system. It'd basically be the same as goin to the well, but just for clean, (and most importantly trusted) drinking water.

It's like they're trying to cover it up. I never saw anything on the news about it and I watch the news every day. I started drinking filtered tap water lately because of this bottle charge crap they're bringing in and don't want to be drinking thms.
