I was speaking to the manager of my local supervalu about this, and he said they cannot increase the prices until the bottles with the recycle code/symbol are on them, and they're not even available to them yet.

I already pay handsomely to have my recyclables dealt with. Taking my money and refusing to give it back until I put said recyclables in the car and take them to some blasted machine at a shop is a brainless, borderline criminal act typical of Amazing Idjit Boy Ryan and his moron compadres.

You do realise you pay for the plastic you put in the recycling bin.

All this costs you is a few minutes to put the bottles in the machine when you go to the shop to do some shopping

And so they should. Imagine for bit of water and 'convenience' to buy 24 one time use plastic bottles. I know people are up in arms about this but its not sustainable - its insanity really - and a start needs to be made somewhere.

and for many people the miles driven to get to these machines. I dont shop in any particular shop , all of them are at least 15km from me. I go to a Civic Amenity centre to get rid of all my rubbish, both domestic, paper and recyclable. Its a lot of work and planning, storing plastics at home until I have a big bag ready to go............ so I am certainly doing my bit and putting in the work. I wish they have thought this through a bit more and come up with a way we could still use our green bins.

West Limerick has been on a boiled water notice since May 2023, this is affecting over 7000 people, every single day. It's due to cryptosporidium . In that time my daughter and her family have spent hundreds of euro on 5 litre bottles of water, so has everyone in this entire area! Its insane. She has since had another baby and is trying to bathe a newborn in water that contains crypto! You can't boil enough water for a bath and if a drop or two gets into a newborn's mouth you'll quickly have a very sick baby on your hands. There has been no water supplied in tankers to people in these communities. Not a drop! Anyone who is sick with cancer or immunocomprised has not been able to shower in their own homes in this time.

It would be unfair on those of us doing our bit for the environment by not owning a car and instead using much lower impact on the environment delivery services to get our groceries.

Do we now need to make an unnecessary trip to the supermarket?

The Condition of the Water pipes in the Area where i live is shocking,We had our water tested as a few did on our estate and the guy said it would be like drinking battery acid and this is in an allegedly well to do area of south dublin lol

I use to work in a supermarket packing shelves while at College. I never forget that amount of little plastic bits you'd find floating in the bottles that were there for a while and we would have to dump!

Turned me completely off buying bottle water unless absolutely necessary.

the price is doubling due to a tax that is being applied. A charge that you can recoup if you drive to a shop to claim a rebate on the duty paid.

swop the word duty/tax/deposit as you see fit. But the price is going up along with the inconvenience. Bin charges will be going up too.

the only fake news, is that this scheme is a good idea. Shop in the north to avoid, buy in bulk and avoid the hassle and save money.

Good point about having to use a car. If we could even crush the cans or bottles before bringing them back it wouldn't be too bad space wise but no they had to be pedantic about it. A proper Irish way of doing things.

In Netherlands it was a shop assistant who done the refunds in my local store, He always laughed at the sheer amount of Heineken crates we used to return.
